It appeared that the hotel had reopened before it was ready with minimal staff and although they were all pleasant Fawlty Towers springs to mind.
It’s a ten minute walk to town down steep streets through an area where the streets needed cleaning and some properties were dilapidated.
All in all we were very disappointed due to many areas of the hotel being closed so didn’t think it was worth the money.
Last minute booking due to Covid and risk of quarantine. Decided to take the risk. Hotel turned out to be a little Gem!
Hotel was spotless, all Covid precautions and rules were adhered to both by staff and other residents, making the whole experience a bearable necessity.
We felt safe and relaxed.
Staff were polite and helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
Special mention to the Receptionist Claudia who checked us in, she was so welcoming and informative
Nice touch on checking out, presented with a handwritten post card thanking us for trusting them with our booking in these uncertain times.
This is a lovely hotel, with an unusual geometry; an unseen tunnel connects 2 parts of the building. There's a lot of traditional Portuguese sculptures and paintings throughout; the hotel is classy .
All the staff we interacted with were friendly, efficient, helpful, knowledgeable, lovely people.
Don't be put off by the hillside location; we found an easy walking route to the old town via relatively gentle slopes, a 10 - 15 minute walk past the Victoria Sports bar, on the same street.
Our room, 314, was beautiful, bright; view of the beach air conditioned, the tv actually had itv and BBC stations plus sky news. I've never stayed in a hotel abroad or in England 🇬🇧 where there is constant hot water 💧 regardless of time of day or night but it was constant hot water here, fabulous...
Reception staff were exceptionally helpful with information and arranging excursions, all spoke excellent English.
Entertainment in the bar was not every night but often enough, and was very interactive, I was delighted to have the opportunity to get up and play guitar and sing one night.
Food wise, plenty of choice for evening dinners which need to be ordered at breakfast time; this was an easy thing though. Meals including breakfast, are served by staff, not a buffet situation, but we found this added a personal touch, and there was always a good selection of food available.
Drinks are more expensive than in the bars of the old town, so if you like alcohol I would recommend going all inclusive here if available .
Lovely, quiet pool, with snacks and drinks available all day.
A road train that stops outside Reception every 40 minutes, goes to the Marina and also the Old Town, very handy, and a lovely way to get around.
There's a really good supermarket just 10 minutes walk down the road towards the marina.
We loved this hotel, for the friendliness and helpfulness of staff, its superb level of cleanliness , its classy traditional Portuguese theme/s, its location too (yes up above the old town, hill side, but so much more central for everything than a staff near the marina or any other area of this large town.
From this hotel its a maximum of 15 minute walk to a superb beach, has to be one of the best public beaches in Europe.
You'll love this hotel, we hope to return at some point. Thanks to all the staff for giving us a wonderful holiday.
Our stay was excellent, from arrival to leaving. I can't remember all the names of the staff, so will just say that every member of staff that we had reason to engage with was pleasant, polite, and helpful.
We paid a little extra to upgrade to a sea view, and all I can say is, Do It, it's definitely worth it. The view from our balcony was excellent.
Our room was spacious, clean, and well appointed, and was cleaned every day.
The pool area was clean and tidy and, the snack bar served a very good choice of tasty snacks at reasonable prices.
All the public areas were kept clean, and the bar served a good variety of reasonably priced drinks. There was also entertainment on most evenings.
We stayed B&B so cannot comment on the evening meals at the restaurant.
The breakfast arrangements were not what most people (British) will be used to, but were simple enough to order, it was a continental breakfast and was served at the tables and was enough to set you up for the day. Yes, you had to pre order the day before and select a time slot, not too much of a problem. Remember, you're in Portugal at a Portuguese run hotel, so expect some local rules.
The hotel is, as many have said, situated at the top of a hill, about a 15 minute walk from the old town square, It is a steady climb back to the hotel, but not that strenuous (for this 62yr old) or his slightly younger wife.
There are a couple of decent bars on the walk back to ease the pain and relax the tired muscles.
It is also close to the marina, a 20/25 minute walk in the opposite direction to the old town. Alternatively there is a 'tourist train' stop outside the hotel, which will take you via the marina and then back to the old town. It' worth buying a full day ticket which covers the 2 routes on this train and costs 7 euro per person allowing travel all day until around 11.30pm.
All in all we had an excellent holiday and this is an excellent hotel and value for money.
If we holiday in Albufeira again then we will definitely consider staying here again.
Thank you for the stay.
Mike & Jackie.
The climb up to the hill each evening and steps to 'the captains' room are not for the faint hearted but worth every step. We had wisely invested in a sea view room and were rewarded tenfold with stunning views of the beach and out to the Atlantic Ocean as well as spectacular sunrises each morning.
Reception staff were warm, welcoming and offered lots of local knowledge.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel do Cerro and recommend it to all able bodied travellers (that uphill climb really is something) or those happy to get a taxi for the short journey to town.
We arrived at 12.00 and our room was ready, always a good start.
The room was spotless and was what we had paid for. The hotel is superclean, even checked under the bed on our last day and the floor was pristine.
I noticed some negative comments regarding breakfast, we had no problems with the breakfast. We ordered it when we sat down and it was bought to your table. Not too keen on buffet breakfasts, too many dirty hands touching the spoons and people coughing over the food. This was much more civilised. Okay some days you had to wait a bit but the staff were all very helpful. Never left the breakfast room hungry. We managed to have breakfast outside every day for a week, it was great.
The poolbar was also very good, no glasses by the pool the a large beer was about 4 euros.
The wifi was good all around the hotel but capped at 3mbs download speed, fine for me.
Overall a great stay, would return but probably not in peak season.
Optonal extras charges for safe , 2 euros a day, kettle 1 euro a day and a charge for the indoor pool and gym.
choice, small portions and a complicated process. These points didn’t ruin my stay and I would recommend staying at this hotel. I believe if these things could be improved it would make this hotel excellent rather than good. Good restaurants in the area I’d mention are O David’s and cafe iguanas. Albuferia is a nice place and I’m glad I visited it’s less tacky than your main holiday resorts.
"Everywhere is hilly, although there are plenty of taxi ranks. You can drink the local water. Be wary of the Sardines, they are cooked complete, I.e. not gutted. "Read full review
"There are small restaurants and shops nearby and it is just about ten minute walk into the old town centre of Albufiera."Read full review
