The Pousada Convento de Évora, also known as the Pousada dos Loios, is located in the museum-city of Évora, a World Heritage site. The Pousada is located between the Catedral Gótica de Évora and the Roman Temple and very close to the Praça do Giraldo and the Colégio do Espírito Santo. The building retains traces of its original architecture, such as courtyard cloisters, a peaceful and serene area where you will find the outdoor swimming pool and an area for you to relax. The Pousada features the Loios restaurant and a bar. Almost all of the rooms are individually unique and include Wi-Fi.

My parents, and my husband and I, booked 2 rooms in this historic pousada and really enjoyed the property. I wish we could have stayed longer than 1 night. We really loved the breakfast area in the vaulted and arches hallway. And the pool area was beautiful, even if the pool was rather cold (just like every other pool we encountered in Portugal). The employees were friendly and helpful as well.

Above all I liked the historic feel of the place, and it’s very convenient location in the city center immediately next to the Roman temple ruins.

I only gave the property 4 stars because the rooms are a little worn out and in need of refreshing. I understand that the rooms will be small because this was a convent, and I expected the small size, but that does not mean the property can’t invest in newer linens or mattresses. I found the room to be less comfortable than I was hoping for. And although pools are not typically heated in Portugal, I think the property should consider it so guests will actually enjoy getting in the water.

All in all, a fine choice in Évora city center. We would stay there again if we traveled to Évora once again.

Lovely building and with very few other guests so we had it almost to ourselves. The reception folk were very friendly. As we stayed two nights they might have given us a slightly larger room as they were so quiet? We were on a 5 pousada tour of the region. We bought (for 15 euros a night) parking inside the pousada grounds as parking in the streets is quite a chore. Good for if you have a British sports car although we were only in a grotty modern hire car.

What a marvellous experience; staying in a 1500 century monastery, beautifully restored, right in the heart of one of Portugal's most magical of cities. After some challenges in the maze of tiny laneways finding the hotel, we soon found ourselves in the most beautiful of lobbies, surrounded by works of art and greeted with enthusiastic staff members. The room, in one of the old monk's cells, was excellent. Fresh, clean and spacious. Enormous bathroom. The location is perfect, as we were able to wander just a few metres to see the many sights of Evora, starting with the Roman Temple at the front door. We ate out for dinner, but the breakfast buffet was enormous, full of Portugese delights and served in the cloisters downstairs. The pool, although not used, looked inviting. Overall, we absolute recommend every one spend one night here, despite the higher end cost.

This hotel is full of beautiful antiques, and the staff are doing their best under the current COVID-19 rules. But the rooms are not up to 4star accommodations - beds are of poor quality, carpeted floors are stained, a shower is difficult to use...the best items in our standard cell were towels and toiletries from a famous Portuguese brand. Breakfast eggs were always cold...we are not using any pousadas from now on. For $200 a night we can find better accommodations in Portugal.

Despite the best efforts of some lovely staff, and a grand building, this hotel suffered badly from very poor management and serious under resourcing. Our room was dark and cramped and clearly not one of their better rooms, even though we’d booked a superior room over a year ago. The restaurant was not in service for dinner ‘ because of Covid’, despite the fact that every other hotel restaurant in our 4 week stay in Portugal was open, including other hotels in the Pestana group. We asked the hotel to book us two restaurants on our arrival. We had to ask 3 or 4 times over the two days before they were able to do this. On one night, despite there being no dinner service for guests, the hotel put on a banquet for 50 ( non resident) people. This took place in the cloisters around which all the hotel rooms were gathered. The banquet included, cheering, singing, foot stomping, hand clapping and no one could sleep until it finished after 11pm. We raised at the time with the staff who were unable to do anything about it. There was no bar service because there were not enough staff- we had to hunt around the hotel to find someone to bring us a drink. When we checked out, despite having shown evidence of hotel room rate at the point of check in, the hotel tried to overcharge us by 90 euros. When we objected, the hotel said they had lost our confirmation. Fortunately we had kept the confirmation email as well so we could show them additional evidence. When we asked to speak to the manager at 10.30 in the morning, we were told he was’at home’ 30 minutes away. Although the receptionist telephoned him, he would not speak to us on the phone. We subsequently wrote to the Pestana group to complain about the poor service at this hotel, although our message was acknowledged, we are yet to receive any reply.
I should add that as we checked out there was a queue of disgruntled guests waiting to complain.
Last year we stayed in 3 Pestana group hotels, this year we have stayed at another 3 and standards have definitely declined

Dear weltravelledofSussex, Thank you first of all for your stay and time to review us at social network with a tittle like this. It´s not very happy to receive your feedback despite all the efforts that we do on hosted our guest the best we can. In fact, the restaurant is closed for guest despite all our efforts on contract staff for the table service, if you could make a rapid search on goolgle you will found that this is a situation all over the world. We will only be open when we could assure that our company service standards can be fully applied. It is also a fact that we informed all of our guest on this situation. The private event that is refferd was not a regular restaurant service as it could be comproved at the Pousada. We assure that the event stopped at the legal our of 11:00 PM so that could not prejudice the guest in house. Please remember that we where only open 3 months during the year of 2020, so we are in a booked events delay due that, so new dates must be re-organized. As a manager of the Pousada of Évora and Arraiolos, I should tell that is unfair your comment, specially because I tried to help on the situation and we applied a discount that is not refferd on your review, but also because I was working at the other Pousada, Arraiolos 30 minutes from Évora, preparing another event. About the allegedly overcharge it was a mistake that was completely resolved, because you booked with a special rate, and the reception make that mistake, that I assume, but it was repaired. We felt sorry for the inconvenient on your stay, having sure that all the team make their best to welcome you the best way. Thank you once again for your stay at Pousada Convento de Évora. When i book a place I look to see if they offer a laundry service. This place said it did but on my arrival i was told it would take 48 hours. Now so far as i am concerned this what in Australian law would be called misleading and deceptive conduct. Given a check in time of 3pm and a check out of 12 noon this is a service unlikely to be usable by the vast majority of guests. The receptionist referred me to a self serve place. Now i am on holidays. I don’t want to waste an hour or more of my time in a laundromat. However i can tell you dear reader what the receiptionist could not tell me. If you walk about 15 mins to the Clean Spot laundry in the morning and knock on the door at the back a lady there will do you laundry and have it back to you that day for a very reasonable price.

As to the hotel. Marvellous decor. Staff friendly . Clean tidy. Centrally located. But its not going to get top marks because it makes misleading statements about its services.

Dear Brianthejust, Thank you for your review. As it was explained to you the type of service requested is a outsourcing , we don't do that type of service on our Pousada, that why the receptionist try to help with different solutions. Of course we could not advise other options that are nor totally secure and professional. The situation was only by the times that you wanted the service done. Only in a information service: since last years ( 2020/2021) at Évora 4 Laundries have closed theirs services, so the offer reduce allot, increasing the response time. Thank you for your words about the hotel, decoration and friendly staff, that´s what makes the difference at hotels. Hope to see you soon with a complete experience with us. We stayed here for three nights and booked because it was a Pousada (stayed in many over the years) and because of its location. The location is great in that you can walk to most of Évora highlights easily. The convent is impressive, with many features retained and the public areas particularly good.
I feel that a previous reviewer probably had the same room, cell 3 as his review mirrors mine. The industrial staining on the carpet was not acceptable and could have been easily rectified. The bath/shower was a joke and detracted from our stay. Additionally there were a number of minor issues which again could have been avoided. In short we felt that a lack of attention to detail was apparent.
The staff were all excellent, breakfast was good; but we certainly would not want to return.

This hotel has heroic staff but not enough of them. The front desk receptionist seem to work 12 hour shifts, move luggage clean windows and yet smiled all the way. The restaurant manager also served a bar tender ( even though it was a floor difference between the two) and this meant that sometimes the bar was unmanned. These great people were excellent but there were simply not enough staff in what was a very average experience.

The Pousada is ideally located next to the temple of Diana and is in a wonderful convent, however, the rooms are poorly designed and tight with a strange lay out. Being in old doesnt mean you have to have a poor lay for rooms and cleanliness needs upgrading. The bathrooms were badly designed.

Common areas need upgrading and we noticed broken tiles and some very old furniture,

We ate both diner and breakfast in the lower cloisters. Breakfasts were OK but not as a good as in other Pousadas and the dinner was good with excellent local produce.

Overall, this a hotel in need of an upgrade and more staff .

First let me say that the location and service was very good. The hotel is as stated a renovated monastery and is right in the center of old town Evora and a great spot for walking around town. Service was excellent from help with our luggage to most all requests. The major disappointment was the accommodation itself. Despite "upgrading" to a suite, we were put in a room that had windows either to a blank wall or the breakfast / dining area, making the view nonexistent, and ventilation poor. The condition of the room, carpets, and furniture were stained and worn. The bathroom shower curtain was also stained, and the tub was scary to get in and out of without any hand holds. Lighting was also poor throughout the unit. To top it off, they charged 2.70 Euro for each coffee pod and no kettle for tea. I did ask at the front desk about moving to a different suite but was told nothing else was available. We only stayed two nights and were gone most of the time so it was bearable, but disappointing.

Dear Mrs. 787MaryG, We appreciated the time you took to give us your honest opinion on your stay and, in particular, the comments regarding your accommodation. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused during your stay. The Pousada was at your stay full occupied, so it was impossible to change room, even that we wanted. As you could see in loco this is a Convent from the XV Century and those rooms where at the center of the Convent, near the Cloister and the Fountain. We transform the use of the building but without redraw the spirit and the essence of the first memories of the place. The Rooms are the old cells of the Fraters and that's the kind of experience that we want that our guest admire, being at a place with a unique History and could feel it everywhere they touch or walk. This is a classified monument, and we want to maintain and respect the characteristic that make this one of a kind. We will talk to our teams so that we can verify what happened so that you could not have had a better experience. The Nespresso coffee service is available at the Suites and as you well referred, the value of service is informed. Thank you once again for staying with us, and we hope that, in the future, you will give us another opportunity to host you and change your impression of Pousada Convento Évora. Great location next to the Roman temple in the historic old town. Beautiful property with excellent public spaces and nice rooms. We have stayed at several pousadas and paradors and this is probably our favourite so far. Breakfast was a little sparse when we arrived but plates were replenished soon after. Children were a little noisy round the pool. Parking could be a problem but we were early enough to bag the last spot in front of the hotel. No lifts so be prepared for stairs.
Interesting town. Well worth a visit.

Not much to see which you cannot already see if you walk up to the little church next door (charge at the door). University is separate as well. The bar area is cool and comfortable, but not many staff there at all times.
