Detailed Reviews
Staying in this hotel felt like being in a museum. Full of history, - so being a guest would probably require some appreciation of the rich history of the location which goes back almost 800 years. This is the best place to stay in Estremoz and, being a formal royal palace, very impressive. Service was at times slow due to COVID-19 - one had to be patient which we gladly were, knowing that the very friendly employees were doing their best to follow the hygiene processes and everyone safe. A very special place to be and probably not something for a mainstream taste. We would have wished some modern elements in the rooms and some practical stowage spaces (e.g. for towels) in the bathroom and some practical elements in the room (such as some more space to store clothes or a little table in the room).

We arrived at sunset during a serious windstorm. This was the perfect backdrop for this historic site. Doors and windows rattled and we could imagine ourselves back in time. The decor is original with interesting art , furniture, and tapestries in each area. We had a large bedroom with living area, and entrance hallway and private bath. Some might complain that the bathroom was a bit small but the beautiful marble and updated fixtures were a pleasant surprise. We had a delicious dinner at the hotel and breakfast was included. The property has a church and museum on site for exploring. I would highly recommend a visit here possibly for a couple of days. There is a beautiful pool area as well and the surrounding villages are very interesting.

Such a beautiful Pousada and wonderful staff. We could not have asked for a better experience! Our room was lovely-very comfortable and every amenity you could want. The building was spectacularly appointed and maintained, The restaurant was closed but the bar menu and staff was very accommodating and had a nice menu that was perfect after a long day of sightseeing.
We would love to return some day!

Overall honestly not worth 185 euros for the night. A simply tea delivered to the room will cost you 8,5€. A simple elétrico boiler is available in pretty much any hotel. Breakfast was nice variety but quality of food could be much better, even if it meant sacrificing some variety of items like croissants and old bread. Restaurant was closed which in a rainy day makes a difference in the comfort of the stay, having to go out to eat. Staff was lovely but accommodations are just not up to Pestana standards I would expect. Nice experience stay at a castle but not to repeat.

Magical castle hotel with magical views in a magical hill fortress town.
Common areas and halls were great (did i mention magical). Have drink in the hall at the bar. Restaurant was the only game in town (another place across the courtyard was closed for the season I think). It serves good local cuisine.
Hotel rooms are decorated in a kind of 17th or 18th century style (my wife found them dated and tired. I found them charming.).
Have wine and cheese in little store as you come through the gates. Great wine and local cheeses and sandwiches.
Great area. We only stayed 2 nights but one could park themselves in a few places in the area for a couple of weeks to take it all in.
Like other Pousadas, offered a very good breakfast.
If you have trouble walking, a castle hotel like this might be a daunting proposition (there is an elevator so walking is doable with some effort).

I chose hotels based on availability of outdoor dining and room service in order to avoid being indoors eating without a mask. They said room service was unavailable as was outdoor dining because it was full. We had to insist that they allow us to take our breakfast outside on the patio.
When we arrived check in person wasn’t wearing a mask. Most staff not wear a mask. Not a covid conscious hotel. Cases in Portugal are surging but they are not taking precautions or making it easy for hotel guests to protect themselves.

Approaching Estremoz, we could see the hilltop castle overlooking town. We joked that it was our hotel, which of course it was. The opulent Pousada Castelo Estremoz is in a 13th century castle, and our schmancy room has a great view, and peculiar painting. I had fun poking around taking photos before we headed out to a long late lunch at A Cadeia Quinhentista in a 16th century medieval jail. Laurence tried a traditional sausage fritter dish, and I had a big pot of huge mussels. The couple serving us were so nice and fun and tried to teach us some Portuguese. There is a lot of slurring involved. Maybe an extra glass of wine would help.
We went for a walk around town, which was pretty dead. Maybe because it’s Sunday and siesta time. Perfect for taking pictures. Estremoz is a larger town with a population of 7500, and well known for marble. We can see a huge quarry from our room, and our bathroom is different colors of marble. Even the sidewalks are made of marble chunks.
After our enormous lunch, we wanted an easy dinner at 9pm. We chose a family run pizza place, had a big pizza, and a salad combination of tuna, egg and potato, plus water and a half liter of wine for €22. Miguel told us that he learned English in school from grade one to ten, but it was British. He learned the American dialect by playing video games and watching TV series. I learned how to properly order a crucial phrase of a half liter of white wine, which was €4.50. You can’t not afford to drink at that price.
We are not big breakfast people, but when it is served in a castle, and included in the room rate, you make the effort to get there by 10am closing. It was the best breakfast we’ve had on our trip. The entrance to the castelo tower is in our hotel courtyard, and you can climb up the top for some nice views. I always look for a bird’s eye view in new towns to figure out the lay of land. There are holes in the upper walkway used to pour boiling oil on invaders.
We enjoyed an incredible dinner in our castle dining room, with superb service and beautifully presented delicious courses.

+1
The Estremoz pousada is a hotel located in a historic Portuguese castle, where the usual courtesy and great Portuguese friendliness is evident. Very comfortable and with an atmosphere that is not found in other places. The kitchen is very good. The breakfast is very varied, top quality and improves with the grandeur of the room where it is enjoyed.

This is a beautiful Castle to stay in. Many of the historical pieces you can find in hallways and bedrooms are originals from the Castle. The girls loved to stay in a real castle, a real place experience compared to Disney's atmosphere. the tower is really beautiful. Covid turns the experience a bit different at breakfast, but it's very nice. don't miss it.

Our family of four ( 2 couples) absolutely loved our stay at Pousada Castelo Estremoz, staying midweek for 2 nights in November 2022. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful, the rooms were incredibly comfortable, and the common areas were beautifully furnished and appointed. As the hotel was quiet at the time of our stay , our included breakfast was a banquet for our family of four. Whilst it was too cold to swim, we loved exploring the castle grounds , with an easy and charming walk into the village of Estremoz, which itself whilst undergoing some road works, offered some fantastic dining options. We found Estremoz to be perfectly located for the Alentejo leg of our Portugal road trip. Pousada Castelo Estremoz represented fantastic value for money for us, and our stay here was a highlight of our trip. I highly recommend this hotel/castle!

Simple, at the entrance of the Pousada. Just park and walk around the city. It's great! Pick the car just to go to the "adegas" to make a wine taste. I advise to go to João Portugal Ramos. The wine stages hearing classical music... Just great!
