Overlooking a quiet stretch of canal in one of Holland’s most beautiful cities, the Steenhof Suites provides luxury accommodation in an elegant property that is flooded with sunlight in the early morning. The rooms are beautifully appointed and spacious -and the bathroom shower was incredible. The only downside was the slightly odorous plumbing - the expensive perfume diffuser placed on the mantelpiece, a tell tale sign that this is a chronic problem. A small office note but not enough to derail an otherwise perfect stay.

The customer service at this hotel is EXTREMELY unprofessional. Leiden is a beautiful town with lots of nice people, save your money and dignity and stay elsewhere. The “manager” is extremely argumentative, defensive, and immature. It is like they are looking for a fight, one is unable to have a civil conversation. If you complain about anything, it is your fault or you are lying. Before leaving, we sent multiple emails and called and received no response. When I mentioned this to the manager, she told me I was LYING because she got no email! We were sent no check in instructions and upon reaching there, there was a sign on the door that said to call a Dutch number for self check-in. We did not have a Dutch sim so we had to pay to activate our phone plan and tried calling the number, but it would not go through. We then called the company we booked through and they tried to call too, but no response. We then found a random Dutch person on the street and requested him to call. There was no answer. All this time, we were waiting outside in the cold with a child. Finally, someone called back on the Dutch person’s phone who was nice enough to come back and inform us that they had unlocked the door. When I brought this up with the manager, she told me it was or fault because she never received any calls. I told her we called repeatedly and there was no answer and that she did not even answer the Dutch person's call. To this she responded that she doesn't answer calls from "random" numbers. How does this make any sense? When we got to the room, a wasp stung me. I sent a message to the hotel (they have a number you can text on, no phone in the room), but there was no response. I had no access to ice or medication. The whole night was spent in pain. Next morning, this is what they had to say, “It’s annoying about the wasp, but unfortunately I can’t do anything about it.” No apology, no checking in, no offer to help or check the room for a nest or additional wasps.  The front desk staff informed us they are not “managers” so unable to provide any information or help. They couldn’t even tell me how to buy a bus pass. They told me the manager would come in at 1 pm, but we were not going to wait around for her (and they leave at 7 pm) so I continued to communicate via texts. This apparently was too annoying for the manager who told me I needed to talk to her in person. When I told her she was not available during the day, she told me she doesn’t work “every hour.” They also did not clean our room the first day even though we left a sign and asked the front desk. Apparently, we were lying about this too. I asked them if they could compensate us for the inconvenience caused and they told me they would have a “present” in the room. We found wine when we returned which I thanked them for and told them I appreciated the gesture, but that we don’t drink for medical reasons and that we would really just prefer something like complimentary breakfast. They told us they could not do so, not even for ONE morning. At this point, I just gave up because the manager was getting very dramatic and mocking me and saying they were not "Hilton" when I all I was doing was talking very politely and asking if we could find something that was mutually acceptable. Honestly, I think the manager was a bit racist. There are lots of options in Leiden, take your money elsewhere because nobody deserves to be treated this way.

We LOVED Leiden! This hotel is in a great location both for accessing the town and the parking, which is a 5 min walk (21 euros a day). We had the attic room which was beautiful with wooden beams and a pretty modern bathroom! Beautiful view over the canal. We didn’t have much contact with staff other than checkin and out (and they were all nice). However….The hotel is housed in is a very traditional old building…it is stunning but that also comes with its challenges! If you are going to opt for the attic room (#14): 1) beware that the stairs up to this room are VERY narrow and steep! Thankfully the young man carried our luggage up otherwise it would have been impossible! They normally don’t have people to help (they have to ask housekeeping to assist). 2) One thing I haven’t read in any of the reviews is that the church Bells ring all through the night. I don’t know if it was because we were in the attic but it sounded like the bells were ringing right in my ear…didn’t sleep well both nights! We realized that there are ear plugs in the bathroom…wish they had pointed that out to us from the get go. 3) the room is very dark and really needed extra light 4) theTV didn’t work as there was no signal…maybe because it was on the top floor! Despite all the above, it was a great B&B and we would stay again!

We had a great stay in the ground floor suite. The room was huge and very comfy. Location was excellent and staff were too. Only downside was the age of the building meant sound proofing was limited and our upstairs neighbours steps, discussions and TV were audible. Luckily they were considerate so it had only a minor impact for us. The bike hire and route maps were a good addition to the hotel service and we enjoyed doing the windmills route.

Steenhof Suites is an attraction in itself. The building dates back to1496, but the bathroom is very modern, the wooden beams of the high ceiling add so much charm to the spacious room, and the bed is super comfortable. The location is superb and close to a plethora of cafes, restaurants, all attractions, etc. The squeaking old stairs leading to the suites might present some serious challenges for those with impaired mobility though. For me, they added only charm. Service is unbelievable! I didn’t realize that I forgot to return the room key and the girl at the reception jumped on the bicycle and chased me down. I was so grateful and apologized profusely. That’s THE highest level of service… amazing!

Perfect place Perfect service Perfect suite One of the best place I ever stayed. Located near the canal and city centre. Parking nearby (cost €21/day). Great atmosphere in the city- young people, beautiful old town, good restaurants. Strong recommendation!

Stayed in 2 suites on the ground floor for 5 nights. Suites were a good size, clean and beautifully appointed with modern bathrooms. A good breakfast was served in a delightful Dutch style room. The exterior of the hotel is in old Dutch style and overlooks one of the many beautiful Leiden canals. The staff and owner were exceptionally friendly. Found Leiden to be an excellent alternative stay to Amsterdam with excellent short train service to Rotterdam,Delft and Schipol Airport amongst others.Though for older travellers or a party of 4 would recommend a cab to Schipol from Leiden at a cost of E 65. Leiden has many good eating places and shops some nearby the hotel. A visit to the old botanical gardens though not big is worthwhile particularly to spend some time resting in deck chairs beside a gorgeous canal at the back. There are also many beautiful walks along the canals and on the cobblestoned roads and lanes in Leiden. Highly recommend the Steenhof hotel and Leiden. Had a wonderful and memorable stay.

This is a fantastic group of suites. We stayed here in July of 2023 as part of our bike tour with Holland Bike Tours. When we arrived, it was a bit confusing as far as getting into the suites, but I think that as much me and my family as anything. (We're more used to a reception area than ringing the buzzer to be greeted by someone). The quality of the suites is top shelf and very well looked after. The various appointments in the suites were great. They even had a secure parking area for our bikes. Breakfast the next morning was fantastic. Very well rounded with all the good stuff. Our "host" was fantastic - I didn't get her name, but she was so welcoming and was very interested in our comfort and enjoyable stay. Thank you so much. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again or recommend it for my friends or family. Thank you.

This is a great place to stay in Leiden, very central, and just across the canal from the Garenmarkt car park (21 Euros a night). I would say it is more of a bed and breakfast than a hotel, as not much apart from our room is available during the day or evening. I felt we were intruding when we went for a drink in the empty bar with the receptionist the only person there and on her computer. The breakfast is excellent - brought in from a nearby cafe, though was repetitive and no choice offered. Our room Rapenburg No 7 was large and lovely, with a very comfortable bed. My only issue is I wish they would invest in some sort of double glazing, because we were woken many nights by people (some going into the hotel) standing outside our ground floor room on the street and chatting loudly to each other. Otherwise the room was great. I would stay here again if we were to return to Leiden, which is a beautiful and quiet city, with fabulous museums and great restaurants.

Leiden was easily our favorite city in the Netherlands, and the Steenhof Suites is a marvelous boutique hotel from which to enjoy the city. Location is perfect. Bed was exceptionally comfortable. Bathroom was nicely designed and had a wonderful shower. Room was large, comfortable, beautifully decorated. The hotel is moving toward a contactless model, but human help is readily available. They even made up our room early for our arrival several hours ahead of normal check-in time. Although we did not take the breakfast, the hotel makes available a quite nice option from a lovely restaurant just a couple hundred feet away -- and the restaurant personnel bring the restaurant to the hotel. Really cannot say enough nice things about Leiden or the Steenhof Suites.
