As a coeliac, getting GF food in the Netherlands can be more difficult than in the UK but this nice hotel - with great views and located in a lovely little village - was able to cater well for me and tried very hard. We had buffets meals at our conference but they had always prepared something seperate for me - Cling film covered rolls at lunch, separate meal served at dinner etc and some GF snacks at coffee breaks.
I would not hesitate to stay here again.

May be the best hotel, of you like to feel a little bit of the old dutch days.
And of you are interessed in art, than this hotel is number one in Volendam.
Good breakfast and tonight calm.
From here, you can reach the small island Marken as well as Amsterdam.

The 3 nights we spent in hotel Spaander was the last hotel we stayed in before returning home to Australia. The atmosphere was excellent and cleanliness of the hotel was very good. It’s position in Volendam was perfect. If the problem with mosquitoes was solved it would have been a five star experience in post covid Europe.

We have just returned from a two night stay at this hotel, and our experience was terrible. The hotel is having extensive refurbishment works done , which appear to have run over into the start of the tourist season that attracts people from all over the world wanting to see the gardens and amazing bulb displays at Keukenhof, in addition to the attractions in and around Volendam itself. We went with an organised coach trip from the UK so did not get to deal with the hotel direct. Apart from the building work that was ongoing, with the usual noise and dust you would expect when you are sharing the hotel with builders and decorators, the view from our room was none existent, just a wall about 2-3 mtr's away from our bedroom window, with a bit of sky at the top. If I had booked the room direct with the hotel I would have visited reception and insisted on moving rooms. Maybe the hotel has different room rates for rooms with views and without views, and if you are considering staying there I would ensure you investigate this before you book. Breakfast and dinner was included in our trip cost, but our dinner offered no choices, other than take it or leave it, and after our first nights experience we decided to leave it and paid to have dinner out on the 2nd night.
Breakfast was a fairly chaotic affair with a long wait for a cup of tea or coffee served by one member of staff from a single machine, in fairness to the staff they seemed to be learning on the job with little instruction or help. Hopefully the builders will finish and leave and a decent level of service will return, but I can't recommend this hotel currently based on our recent experience, I've added some photos to highlight the issues raised.

Arrived around 7 pm and had booked reservation through the Best Western site where you are supposed to get 15% discount, welcome drinks, and late check out. Restaurant and bar are closed due to renovations, which are not mentioned in the web site. The pool and sauna were closed due to electrical issues. Did not receive welcome drink. Room was supposed to be a sea view but was a nice view of dumpsters. We stayed two nights. Location in volendam is nice for walking around. I complained via an email and spoke to the clerk on duty; I received no response. Stay away from this place. Breakfast is okay. The staff is nice but the management is unresponsive and I did not receive 15% off my second night, and when I asked about late check out was told it was not possible. Room was marginally clean. Bathroom needed repair.

Not safe. be care full! Because it's a great location. But nobody will help you. It's scary
Another guest a woman with a girl got painters in the room during breakfast and all paint over her clothes. RUDE

The hotel is great, the staff even better. The Volendam people are rather stubborn but I’m rather used to that being a West-Frisian… However that (in)famous attitude does not reflect in the professional and personal approach from the staff.
I will choose Spaander again should I go back to Volendam.

Volendam is a great option if you want to visit Amsterdam but not stay in the city - it's about 20 minutes by bus to the centre. The Hotel Spaander has a nice location, overlooking the water, and is surrounded by as many dutch tourist shops & bars as anyone could ever want.
The check in process was pretty disappointing for us. The room we were initially put into was a joke. It was in the attic, meaning that on one side of the bed, it wasn't just impossible to stand up, I doubt it would have been possible to sit-up in bed. Also, the windows were tiny - definitely necessary to leave the lights on during the day (the spiders weren't too impressed at being disturbed when I opened the window either). The bathroom was even funnier. As the "shower" was in the eaves, it consisted of a 3ft sq tub that you sat in to shower yourself - height clearance was at most 4 ft. Given both my wife & I are 6 feet tall, I don't know how they expected us to manage in this room.
We complained, and got put in a very nice room - apart from no sea view (in fact we looked into a room only a few yards away), and it was no-smoking. As we'd reserved specifying a smoking sea view room 5 months in advance, this wasn't really acceptable but all that was available.
I noticed our reservation was marked as being from Best Western - don't know if the experience would be better if the booking had been made directly to the hotel.
Otherwise, the hotel was fine. A bit of an oasis of calm in a resort that can otherwise get a little rowdy (at least on a Saturday night). Staff were helpful in e.g. getting bus timetables off the internet.

I booked this property in February for my May 1st trip., using booking.com. It was guaranteed with a credit card and had a cancellation penalty. On April 27th I received an email from the hotel that they could not honor my reservation due "to a computer error". We had two rooms reserved so I had to scramble around to find two rooms at the last minute. There were no rooms anywhere in Vollendam, so had to change our itinerary and could only find rooms at a much higher price. I would not consider a reservation with Hotel Spaander as a guarantee, so if you book, you better have a backup plan.

I was in Volendam for the first time in August this year and while we were there (just for the day), I fell in love with this beautiful hotel that reminded me of another hotel that I love so much, The Carrington in Blue Mountains, Australia. Therefore I made up my mind to comeback soon and stay here. Since my husband and I are about to celebrate our anniversary, I decided to fly back to Holland and spend four nights in this hotel (19-23 Oct) that has left me such a good impression and wonderful nostalgic feeling. I booked two rooms as we were travelling with another couple, my aunt and uncle. Weeks ahead prior to our arrival, I sent them a request asking if we may be allowed to have an early checkin between 10-11am since our flight from Vienna that departs at 06:50 will arrive shortly before 9 in the morning. So that leaves us plenty of time to checkin and freshen our selves before proceeding to the anniversary luncheon party for me and my husband that is being hosted by our friends who are residents of Holland. Good enough, we received a reply that the hotel is pleased to inform us that we will be allowed to check into our rooms at the time I requested. Upon arriving Amsterdam and claiming our suitcses & rented car, we headed to Volendam and arrived the hotel shortly before 11 only to be given a run around and dull excuse that our rooms won't be available until 2pm and they never agreed to an early checkin. I argued with the reception that they did confirm via email otherwise why would we waste our time driving all the way to Volendam? We could have chosen to drive straight to the house of my friend in Alphen aan den Rijn (approx. 1 1/4 hr. away from Volendam) where the party is being held! They made excuses after excuses, made us wait at the lobby only to be told finally that there is absolutely no chance. We were offered to freshen up ourselves by using the shower at the indoor pool area but there were no towels, soap or other toiletries available. In the end, they coldly offered us to leave behind our suitcases for safekeeping until we return in the evening. We wasted precious 2 1/2 hours for nothing and arrived at the luncheon party very late!!! But mind you, they were quick to demand that I submit immediately my credit card for consumption guarantee even before they could assign or give us any room key! CAN'T BE MORE GREEDY THAN THAT!!!
Anyway, in the hopes of not destroying such a happy occassion, I chose to ignore this incompetence. But during our stay especially in the evening after dinner, my group and I go for a swim in their indoor pool which officially is open until 11pm. However, their VERY UNFRIENDLY evening shift male receptionist would always come to us as early as 10pm reminding us not just once but 2x even 3x to vacate the swimming pool area before 11pm and that with a very rude tone and impertinent attitude! My husband once lost his temper and came into an almost heated argument with this man. Now, on the night before we fly home, I wanted to settle our bill in advance since we had a 6am flight the next morning. But to my surprise they said that my credit card has been declined! I told them that they have already blocked a sufficient amount when I checked in and they even made me sign the authorization. I told them that this same authorization must be used to settle our bills. The lady receptionist said that she cannot locate the authorized form as it must have been misplaced by the other receptionist therefore she wanted to charge another separate bill to my credit card! I told her there is no wonder that I will reach my card's limit because charging a separate new bill apart from the amount they blocked plus the other charges I previously made on my card like our plane tickets would push my credit's maximum allowance. She said that the hotel will eventually cancel the blocked amount charged to my visa account, but WHEN??? She doesn't know because of the missing authorization form which has on it the corresponding reference number that is needed to lift the blocked amount. My goodness, I was almost getting out of my mind and way too angry that all I wanted was to get out of this place full of incompetent fools so I paid instead in cash!
Two days after arriving Vienna, we embarked on another voyage on the 25th Oct. and this time a cruise of the Black Sea and Mediterranean. Having boarded the ship, I submitted my card to the reception to authorize them for my charges onboard and I was told that only part of my credit limit can be used. Why? Because up until then, this Spaander Hotel has not lifted the blockage they did to my Visa card!!!!
REST ASSURED THAT I SHALL NEVER RETURN TO THIS HOTEL AGAIN NO MATTER HOW LOVELY I FIND IT STILL!!!! IT HAS A MANAGEMENT POORER THAN THAT OF A RATHOLE/NO STAR HOTEL!!!!
