We booked through an agent and the room size wasn't communicated to us, we were in a basement room - do not ever stay in these rooms. We couldn't stand up together or put our luggage on the floor there was literally no room and absolutely no storage. We had to perform gymnastics to get in and out of bed. Underfloor heating and a tiny basement window made it hot as hell and bed was like a camp bed, super uncomfortable.
We paid for an upgraded room for the rest of our five night stay, we couldn't have stayed in the basement prison cell.
The upgraded room was lovely and big and airy and comfortable bed. Unfortunately still no storage, no shelves in the bathroom. Lived out of suitcases.
Staff were very friendly although the website says they are knowledgeable and live and work locally "ask them anything" when we asked them a couple of times for restaurants nearby two separate people said that they could google something for us - which we could have done ourselves.
The lobby and eating area was lovely and the hotel's saving grace and the breakfasts although a little unusual were really nice.
Handy location to walk or get the tram into town.

Some mixed reviews on here so I was slightly apprehensive about the size of our room but I was not disappointed, yes the room is small but doesn’t seem out the norm for Amsterdam.
We had a standard double and had a small balcony, bathroom was nice decor, there was enough space for 2 adults for 3 nights (spending the day sight seeing) our only downside was that we were the first room on the 2nd floor, so could hear a lot of noise from lift/stairs and every time people walked past.
Breakfast was enough to keep us going, good selection, staff were friendly.
Good location and glad we stayed outside of the main centre. I wouldn’t rush back to Amsterdam as it wasn’t my favourite city break (personal preference) but I enjoyed coming back to our hotel with its nice reception area (fire!) and liked the area.

Like many new, low budget 'boutique' hotels, the V has a great lobby and hang out space and rooms that are one step above a youth hostel. My room was perched at the top of a very steep stair case. No closet or drawers and just a few coat hangers inside. After tremendous effort to secure rooms online, only one of three went through on my card. Through considerable expense at calling from my cell (no one would call me back) I secured the two additional rooms for my friends. When we checked in, both of their rooms were actually less expensive, with mine, being smaller in size and 'standard' vs 'premium' being more expensive. No explanation or apology was offered and it didn't help I found a bug on my wall immediately upon check in! Breakfast looked really nice and the hotel is well situated.

Stayed in a loft suite which was overpriced and missold anyway as it's not actually a suite at all, just a room with a shelving unit between the bed and the rest of the room.
The room stank of smoke on arrival and had not been properly cleaned, including blood on a door handle. Furniturne very tatty and worn, sofa extremely uncomfortable and wobbly. Horrible rough towels in the bathroom, some with holes in them. Crockery was all mismatched and only 1 wine glass and 1 pint glass provided. Tiny kettle which was terrible quality and took about 10 minutes to even boil. No conditioner in the bathroom. No soap in the toilet room. Tea and coffee facilities not topped up and no milk provided. Light switches on dimmer which would get stuck, lighting in general terrible, poorly placed and useless bulbs. No where to hang coats.
Completely lacked any kind of luxury that they try to portray online. Having to pay extra for breakfast because you've booked this supposedly higher quality room is a joke, especially when breakfast consists of just bland continental options, 1 of each so not even 1 per person, and the fruit was far from fresh.
No food available at the Hotel other than the overpriced breakfast and staff on the "bar" had no idea how to find or make drinks, the girl we spoke to was looking for red wine in the fridge...
Avoid!

We stayed for 5 nights from 29th Dec to 2nd Jan.

The room wasn’t ready at first as we arrived early. However, we were able to store our suitcases and were given information on what restaurants they would recommend.

It was surprising to find that the hotel didn’t provide any form of food minus the breakfast which was 17.50 euros per person.

The hotel is about a 20 minute walk to the centre. There’s a bar restaurant opposite called Cafe Kale which sells awesome bagels.

We had a 10 month old with us as well and did not feel the room or the hotel was equipped for a baby and feel that adding a baby on shouldn’t be an option.

When going into the room it was an extremely tight squeeze. The shower has no door and becomes a slip hazard due to the water going onto the floor.

The lift was tiny and just about fit our Doona stroller in. Therefore, had we brought our other stroller we would have had to carry it up 4 flights of stairs.

For the price and after looking at others around I would say it is extremely pricey for the what you get.

There is no kettle, coffee or water given.

That being said staff were extremely helpful and kind. Most especially the man who works the night shifts.

We will definitely be back to Amsterdam but would most definitely find a different hotel.

Response from Lukasz Michalski, Gastenservice/Front Office at Hotel V Frederiksplein

Dear Courntey, Thank you for your review. As mentioned on your booking confirmation or check-in time start at 15. In case the room is not ready before 15, our guest are always welcome to leave their suitcases until they can check-in. We never mentioned we have restaurant at this location. Our hotel offer breakfast for our guests and bar/ lounge area. As you request, we added baby bed to your room. As we are situated in historical building we can't do so much if it goes about elevator. In the request for a room, you asked specifically for Hotel V Frederiksplein, and you were aware of the room size which is between 14-16m2. All our bathrooms are walk-in showers and equipped with bad mats you can put on the floor. Water in Amsterdam is ready to drink from the tap. In case you do not prefer tap water, you can find bottled water at our Bar, as well fresh coffee. Kettle is available at the Frontdesk upon request. Unfortunately, we didn't hear from you during your stay that you need help with the stroller, otherwise we will be happy to help you! Thank you for the compliments about the staff, we really appreciate it! We hope you enjoyed your stay in Amsterdam and we hope to welcome you back in our Loft apartments, instead of normal rooms! Much Love. From Amsterdam. Lukasz Hotel V

There was literal poop on our hotel floor that stunk. After I complained, the front desk attendant wiped it with toilet paper from our room and refused to give us a change of room. He asked me to talk to the manager the next morning. There was no manager and they asked me to email them because they couldn’t give me a refund since the “details aren’t clear”? As if we decided to poop in our room and then sleep there.
I have sent 3 emails and tried getting a hold of the manager 4 times through Hotwire- where I made the booking. They have ignored my emails and have been avoiding my calls. They have been incredibly unethical and have been avoiding addressing this issue. Doesn’t any honest to god customer deserve a refund for enduring ACTUAL SH*T in our room!

They refuse to acknowledge or apologize! This is shocking service!

The hotel room, unfortunately, fell short of expectations. Firstly, its subterranean location was not clearly communicated in the Dutch-written advertisement, potentially causing confusion for guests. The room's limited space made it challenging to move around comfortably. Surprisingly, there were no proper pillows, only large sofa cushions, and despite requesting one, none was provided. Additionally, the absence of a headboard, coupled with the room's small window that required maintenance assistance to open, created a somewhat claustrophobic atmosphere.

The passage leading to the room was not only narrow but also posed safety concerns, lacking a lift for accessibility. The room suffered from total darkness, lacking external light sources. Adding to the discomfort, there was no table or chair available. The bathroom lacked a door for the shower, resulting in water flooding the floor after each use. Further, the bathroom's top ceiling showed signs of corrosion, and the switchboard had lost its paint, highlighting maintenance issues. The mirror was inconveniently positioned too high, affecting practicality.

The most disappointing aspect was the unhelpful attitude of the staff who checked me check-in. A lack of coordination between morning and evening staff members led to confusion regarding a simple request. Fortunately, another staff member intervened, deescalating the situation and providing the necessary assistance.

Regrettably, this overall negative experience leaves me with the decision not to revisit this hotel in the future. I hope this feedback contributes to improvements for both the hotel and prospective guests.

I found this hotel because I was traveling by myself, and this hotel had some small, 1-person rooms that were a great value in an expensive city. My first night was fine. However, the second night I was kept awake almost all night by an inordinate amount of noise from the hotel lobby/cafe above my room: Furniture being dragged across the floor, heavy equipment running — as if they were having the floors refinished. It went on until 2am and started up again at 5am! When I came up in the morning and asked the reception desk what happened, and for assurance that the project was complete (and would not be repeated again the next night), they had no idea what I was talking about. To be clear, I understand that all hotels have noise (and I sleep with earplugs and a white noise maker), but this was EXCEPTIONALLY loud. Their solution was to move me to a new, smaller room — but required me to pack up all my things and check out before my 9am timed ticket to the Rijks Museum (I had about 15 minutes to do it), then leave my bag at the desk and check back in to the new room after 3pm. No apology, no offer to upgrade the room, no attempt to make up for a night of lost sleep and an entire day of being completely exhausted. When I returned to check in to the smaller room, I noticed that the floor was warm, as if it had radiant heating, making the room quite hot. I asked about it and was told that it was some sort of canal machinery that generated heat and could not be turned off. There was only one small window that could not be left open overnight because it was at street level and had no bars. They didn’t provide any other solution, but being desperate and having only 2 more nights there, I sweated it out. Maybe the non-basement rooms are more suitable, but I would not recommend the basement rooms at this hotel.

Stayed here for one night with colleagues as our company office was nearby. We booked large double rooms which were perfect for what we needed; comfy bed, lots of pillows, great shower, toiletries etc. We were greated on arrival with a glass of champagne, friendly receptionist and really nice bar area. I stayed in room 214 looking out on the street and maybe because everyone cycles but it was very quiet. They even provide ear plugs for light sleepers. Breakfast was uniquely served as a sort of afternoon tea with a selection of fresh fruit, bread, pastries and granola with plenty of cheeses, meat and tomatoes. Plenty of coffee available and fresh orange juice and pleasant staff. All in all a great stay and will definitely return. They mentioned construction work but there was none that affected my stay or my colleagues who were on different floors.

Thrilled we listened to our friends recommendation. Hotel V was clean, trendy, SAFE, and in a great location. Walkable 15 mins to VanGoh and 30 mins to Anne Frank House (we walk at a brisk pace). The breakfast is 100% worth the price. It was our favorite part. Located next to a gym, and across the street from two cafe’s. All the staff were extremely friendly & professional. Would stay again.

Once at Central Station board tram 4. Exit at the stop called Frederiksplein after about 20 minutes. One-way tickets can be purchased inside the tram at € 3, - per person with debit/credit cards only (no cash). Consider buying a 24-hour ticket at € 7,50 for multiple rides. Please remember to always check-out when leaving the tram.

Answer from Agnieszka P

Hi Tom, The hotel has 2 buildings, and only one of them has a lift, which goes only to send floor so the rooms on the top floor are never fully accessible by elevator.
