Allow yourself to enter the historical gate next to the Maritime Museum, at number 5 Kattenburgerstraat. The lovely parkland oasis you will encounter is the former Marine Land of the Dutch Navy, located in the heart of Amsterdam and close to the Central Station. There, between the original 17th Century wall, the historical harbour and the age-old trees, one finds Pension Homeland. The former Officers Mess in building 006 has been restored preserving its original details and now houses a 31 room hotel, its own atmospheric bar and a restaurant with its own brewery.

Detailed Reviews
Pension Homeland is a cool spot, in a great location, with a very nice staff. The hotel is nice, with views of the marina, a nice bar and restaurant. All the staff was very nice and welcoming with kind greetings and recommendations for things to do. While the room was small, but I think standard size in most European hotels from what I’ve gathered in my travels, the bed was comfy, the room was clean, and we had an unobstructed view of the courtyard and marina.
Most things were walkable, if you don’t mind walking ☺. In about 20 minutes, steady pace walking time, you can get to Amsterdam Central, the Red Light district, tons of restaurants, the canal/canal rides and attractions, and stops for the Hop on Hop off bus.
I would definitely stay again.

Stayed in February with 7 friends.
We had 2 family rooms which were 2 singles and a large double in each room. The rooms are also partitioned so the double feels like it's in a separate room.
Beds are very comfortable. The room is really spacious so we didn't feel like we were in each other's way at all. Bathroom was also clean and spacious.
The hotel staff were so friendly and accommodating. Bar was good to and had lots of space to chill out. Bar is card only though!

We were there for a couple of nights around Valentine's day.
The hotel is a refurbished navy barracks, close to the naval museum but not much else. It has 1 super slow elevator, not a major inconvenience since the place wasn't full but I imagine in high season might be more of a concern for people with limited mobility.
The staff was very friendly and provides assistance and advice l good dining places. Even assisted with a delivery issue I had. They really go above and beyond.
We were in the top floor and got a room with a great view of the canals and the antique ship next to the naval museum. The room was small but functional. The heating is done via radiator so it took a while before the room was at a comfortable temperature. Bathroom was small with only shower and toilet, the lavatory outside the bathroom next to the bed.
The restaurant in the premises was pricy but excellent
Location is a bit secluded but also quiet and safe. Keeps you away from the busy city centre but this effectively means that it is difficult to get to from the main train station and that you are at least 20-25 min walk away from anything worth seeing. This should not be an inconvenience for anyone renting a bike.

This ‘hotel’ is simply fabulous. Welcoming staff, great service, great food in the restaurant, amazingly good value set breakfast, comfortable rooms, tea/coffee/microwave facilities on each landing, great location and views.
The styling and decor is brilliant, former 1960’s naval officers mess full of period furnishings and individual murals in each room and around communal areas.
Wouldn’t think about looking anywhere else to stay in Amsterdam if we visit the city again - oh and outstanding value. Five ⭐️

Pension Homeland is as far from your average cloned hotel as you can get. Everything about the place is individual, quirky and pleasing. Set among trees and canal-side gardens, it used to be the on-shore quarters of naval officers and has been sympathetically converted to an ideal base for visiting Amsterdam. The rooms are not large but contain everything necessary for comfort, especially the wonderful beds, and our own room (303) had a fantastic view of the city skyline and of the replica 18th century Dutch East Indiaman ship, moored at the jetty of the National Maritime Museum close to the hotel.
Breakfast was good and very generous, and the three evening meals we ate in the hotel restaurant were each of an excellent standard. The staff were friendly and helpful and all spoke good English.
Although Pension Homeland is away from the city centre, it is within walkable distance and there are frequent trams and buses. In fact there is nothing to fault here and everything to praise.

For those who seek a hotel with a genuine personality and the natural charisma of a no-nonsense, historical, and superb location, you may have found it at Pension Homeland.
If you value understated comfort instead of Trumpian pseudo-luxury, genuine charm and sympathy instead of the plastic courtesy of the typical chain hotel, you will feel welcome here no matter what.
If you'd rather have a mad collection of outstanding pieces - from original photos to local boat models and murals - decorating every nook and cranny of the many cosy spaces spread around this small hotel, in lieu of the standard mass-produced décor you would find in any major brand accommodation, look no further.
The location is perfect: away from crowds and city noise, exactly halfway between Central Station and City Centre, literally on the water.
The staff is outstanding: Hands-on professionalism, genuinely pleasant, with a healthy dose of quirky personalities.
The house cat is friendly if properly aloof, and even the house dog will welcome you with a smile.
The impossibly slow lift is saved by its nickname - Ferrari, since it's Italian - and it forces you to realise you have come to a place that will make you slow down and enjoy its natural charm, whether you like it or not. Also, the lack of speed on the lift will make you exercise more, while allowing you to take a good look at the boat models installed on its roof.
All in all, it may not be for everyone, but I loved the experience!

My wife and I spent 2 nights at this lovely hotel. From Schiphol Airport we took a train to Central Station then walked to the Canal and at a self service kiosk purchased a Tram Ticket for line 26 and took it 2 stops. We then walked 15 minutes to the hotel. After checking in we had a wonderful lunch at the hotel restaurant then walked to the main part of the city. The room we had, 212, was basic and comfortable. Inside the bathroom was the toilet and shower. The sink is outside the bathroom so while one of us was showering, the other could shave, brush teeth etc. Hotel has an elevator. The food at breakfast and dinner was really very good. The overall staff is helpful. Enjoyed our stay very much. We choose this hotel because of its location to the cruise port.

Short trip to Amsterdam as a couple.
It was a 20 minute walk to the main train station which we were ok with.
Breakfast was good. Rather than opting for the bed and breakfast style package, we paid for breakfast each day as there was a quite a large menu with lots of different larger and smaller sized options on it.
The bar was lovely, we got to sit by the water and enjoy a few beers from the brewery. We chose to go to the bar rather than wait for table service as it was a lot quicker and we could look at the different beers on sale.
The Reception was very helpful.
There is a large grassy area just outside which our room overlooked. This did get a bit noisy on a late evening with groups sat out.
The water in the shower became ridiculously hot at times so do be careful of this.
This was a good base on the outskirts of town.

My son and I stayed three days at the Pension Homeland after staying in the museum distract. We are both art and craft beer lovers so the Pension was a double win for us. :) The bar has several craft beers on tap and they bring in musical groups. And the walls are filled with works of art. We also enjoyed spending time by the fire looking out at the water. The staff was incredibly engaging talking about the beer, the food and the family nature of the staff. I especially enjoyed the floral arrangement at the entrance desk. I was informed it was a regular practice. Take a look at our photos to paint the picture of our stay.

I agree with the other reviewer. It’s not that far but with baggage I’d get a taxi as it’s not expensive.
Most river boats dock by the Central Station of Amsterdam. You will be able to catch a taxi at the station that will take you to the Pension Homeland which is by the Maritime Museum. The cost of a taxi from Central Station to Pension Homeland is approximately 12 Euros.
Hi Chris
We will be arriving on the Scenic Jasper River Cruise ship.
Lois
I’m guessing about 60 euros. But much cheaper to get a taxi to Centraal station (maybe 10 euros) and from there it’s a quick train ride to Schipol.
