The W Amsterdam has received mixed reviews, with its central location being highly praised by guests keen to explore the city. However, the hotel's atmosphere is often described as outdated, and some guests have called out the noise from the in-house dance club. While the unique amenities and views are popular, opinions on the rooms are divided, with reports of uncomfortable temperatures, poor lighting, and maintenance issues. Housekeeping generally earns high marks for cleanliness. Despite the friendly staff, some guests feel the hotel does not offer good value due to inconsistent service and quality concerns.

Had a fairly good stay here recently—my friend and I got the 1 King Bedroom Atrium View, but at check-in they upgraded us to the 2 Twin Bedroom City View! There isn’t really a big concierge or lobby area—very small and they have two separate buildings (across from each other). Our building had Mr Porter restaurant/bar which was great to grab drinks upstairs.

Room was nice! Fairly small but bed was comfy and I liked the decor, looked chic and futuristic. We got a view of the Royal Palace but sadly it was under construction so not the best view. They gave us water bottles each day housekeeping came—there’s a coffee machine too, a fridge and snack bar (for purchase). The hallways look a bit gloomy and dim lit.

Each time I left/arrived back at the hotel, I never saw any bellhop or were greeted by staff at the entrance. For a chain hotel, this W location is more on the 4-star side (vs. 5 star luxury) and a bit over priced.

We stayed at the W Amsterdam during a multi-city trip. This was our 4th stay at this hotel. Some of our stays have been great and some not so much. We arrived a little earlier than the usual check in time and were delighted that our room was ready. The staff member checking us in was very friendly and she made us feel very welcome.

This was actually the first time we were allocated a room in the Bank section of the hotel and it was a pleasant surprise. The rooms look a bit more modern and we had a great canal view. The room was cleaned well and very comfy. One thing I would note is that if you have a fear of enclosed spaces, let a staff member know during check in, in case you're allocated a room in the Bank area. I'm not sure if it's all room categories, but our shower and toilet area were completely enclosed in cubicles that were built into the walls and mirrored on the outside. We found it really sleek and stylish, but just something to note.

One thing that changed on this trip was that the check in is now downstairs on the ground level of the main building. It's a small area where we used to collect umbrellas from and leave our luggage on previous trips. The upper level where the check in area used to be located is now all part of the rooftop lounge area. We had drinks at the rooftop lounge one day, and although no fault of the staff, there were some rude guests who snatched our seating while the hostess was showing us to our table. Unfortunately it was the last outdoor seating table and we had to sit inside, which was ok, but wish the staff member has said more to the other people. Once seated inside, we had to flag down a waiter every time we needed something. The waiters are in no rush to help. We had some time to spare so it didn't bother us too much, however, we did see some angry guests.

Overall, we had a great stay at the W during this trip. I'm happy to say that I gave it another try and hopefully my future stays are also great ones!

Dear GuyaneseMadness, Thank you for sharing such a detailed review of your recent stay with us at W Amsterdam. We’re thrilled to hear that your fourth visit was a charm and that you had a great experience this time around! We’re glad you enjoyed your room in the Bank building, especially the modern design and canal view. Your note about the enclosed spaces is very helpful, and we appreciate you mentioning it for the benefit of future guests. It’s also wonderful to know that our team made you feel welcome from the moment you arrived. I’m sorry to hear about the incident at the rooftop lounge and the slower service you experienced. While we strive to provide exceptional service in every area, we regret that this part of your stay was less than ideal. Your feedback is valuable, and we’ll be addressing these points with our team to ensure a smoother experience for all guests. Thank you for giving us another try, and we’re delighted that you had a positive overall experience. We look forward to welcoming you back for your fifth stay and many more great ones in the future! W Hotels are known to be "quirky," but the W in Amsterdam is dated and is probably in need of a refresh. Staff were attentive and professional. The room seemed to be clean enough, but wall paper was peeling and the room was pretty small. The bath area consisted of a small shower stall with smoked glass and a unique vanity area overlooking the bed. And, the bed seemed to be broken.

We have stayed at many W properties around the world, and this one unfortunately left us with a disappointing aftertaste for several key reasons:

1. We had no heating for the entire stay. This is wholly unacceptable, and while they were apologetic we would have expected at least a partial refund for the meaningful inconvenience. Given that it was between 5-7C in Amsterdam during our entire stay, it is highly surprising that the room was even made available for guests.

2. Certain hotel staff were too informal in how they addressed guests. In particular Sabrina in the spa was impolite with an undertone of giving orders instead of the professionalism expected.

3. Two of the elevators (one out of two in each of the buildings) were malfunctioning during our entire stay - half of the time we were squeezed in between other guests and staff. At one point none of the hotel elevators worked and we were redirected to a staff elevator inside the kitchen area. Completely unacceptable.

The reception and breakfast staff should be given credit for being friendly and the central location is convenient, but overall W Amsterdam seems to have unresolved operational as well as staff-training issues that need addressing.

As loyal Marriott customers we would have expected better.

We stayed 5 nights 6 days.

The room is very small, the hotel is very expensive, it looks dirty, the elevators are battered, the towels are old and have a bad smell... the 2 restaurants in the hotel do not belong to it, in both of them I made a reservation through the Concierge and in none of the 2 restaurants respected our reservation. You ask the reception to confirm or something and you see that the people are not supervised, they never confirm or what you asked for is not done.

It only has a good location and if you included breakfast in your stay, it was very good.

Very bad price-quality ratio, don't go

I’ve never left a review for a hotel but please be weary if you’re planning on staying in this hotel, for me it was nothing but problem after problem.

I booked the W Amsterdam through booking.com with my Revolut card which I don’t have a physical card of, I was never told that in order to book you need a physical card and not an Apple Pay card as their card machine doesn’t take Apple Pay. Since I was never told this, I had to ring multiple times to try and sort out another card with them which was really stressful.

Myself and my friend booked this hotel as we wanted to use the Spa facility. We were only staying for one night and paying a lot of money so we wanted to make full use of the facility. We booked into the spa for a certain time but missed our slot due to a delayed dinner reservation. We didn’t think it would have been a problem to push the slot back as we were guests of the hotel and paying a lot of money to stay there. We rang the hotel and asked the staff can we come down now and he told us the spa was fully booked for that night multiple times. We walked over to see if we could use the spa and there was not one person there! The spa was empty apart from my friend and I.

The next morning, we went down for breakfast at 10:25, we were not told at check in what time breakfast ended at so we assumed it was 11. We were greeted by a very rude staff member who told us the kitchen was closed. We went down to reception and explained we were not told what time breakfast was over so she said we could get room service… we waited 1 hour 10 minutes for the room service which was two cold soggy waffles and a bill of €60.

When we went to reception to tell them about our breakfast, the receptionist told us we will not have to pay for it, but the W took the €60 payment from my account anyway.

A very disappointing trip. This hotel is not worth the money.

Overall, we were not very pleased with our overnight stay at the W exchange building. We booked one night as we had a flight canceled due to weather. First and foremost, I was traveling with family. We were put on two separate floors as they supposedly could not accommodate us on the same floor. My family members got their luggage delivered to their rooms in a timely fashion, while mine went missing for quite some time before it was finally delivered to my room. The sound insulation in the room is basically non-existent! Major design flaw here! The gentleman who showed us my room stated that we would not hear any noises from the club which was the farthest from the truth. We could hear the bumping and the bass of the club until the wee hours of the morning in our rooms on both of our floors. The other problem being is that every time anyone opened or shut their room door the whole room shook and vibrated! Earthquake style! The bed was moderately comfortable, ( not the best to be sure) but between the noise from the club and the slamming of the doors, it did not make for a restful night sleep! The temp in the room went from too hot to too cold with no adjustments manually made. Definitely not a good climate control system! And the lighting in the room is extremely dim. The darkest part of my room was the shower. It was next to impossible to see well in the whole room overall. The lighting in the room is extremely dim and very poor. The room itself is designed awkwardly and very modern but there were way too many flaws to make this overnight stay an enjoyable one. Having only two desks for check-in/ check out also makes for a long line checking in or leaving the hotel. Much of the staff were polite while others borderlines on rude. Elevator waits were quite lengthy going up or coming down. The upside to this W is its location… Very centrally located, right near public transportation, and not too far from the airport. Needless to say, if we were to return to Amsterdam, the W Exchange would not be a hotel we would consider for our stay.

Bad experience, poor service and structure not up to par. The absolute worst part was the restaurant and bar on the top floor with lazy and snobbish staff. Room cleanliness sufficient, on weekend evenings it feels like sleeping in a disco amidst noise and loud music coming from the upper floor. On a positive note, the staff at the reception were very helpful. Truly terrible guest management…..in a city where any venue is always very kind and attentive

I haven't stayed at a W hotel before and I understand they are supposed so be quite "hip" and stylish. Had I not taken than into account when writing this review, I'd likely be even more scathing of the hotel's general appearance and level of upkeep noticeable in my three night stay there.

First off, on entry it looks and feel like you're entering a 3 star hotel with no offer from the front desk for anyone to carry ones luggage up to the room. Come to think of it you don't get much of an explanation of anything other than the slightly oddity that the hotel is built across two adjacent buildings requiring you to cross a road so as to get from one to the other and access facilities in the other building. Whilst my room was in the same building as the rooftop bar and Mr Porter - and is where breakfast would be served each morning, one had to cross the road to the other building to access the gym, swimming pool, etc. which I never did. The corridors and lift are very shabby with their best days behind them. Imagine something between a concrete storage facility and a bunker.

I will add though that it is superbly placed in central Amsterdam and from a location perspective it doesn't get any better - close to pretty much everything without being directly in the center where street performers and pickpockets may make themselves a nuisance.

I think the biggest disappointment though was my very weirdly configured room which felt like a studio apartment with what seemed like a kitchen sink directly behind the bed. There was always a concern that washing ones hands could result in your pillow getting wet. The lighting in the room requires a choice between blackout, dingy and dark. There was a separate shower cubicle which seemed too much in the middle of the room and a separate WC which felt like it was inside a radioactive cave on account of its orange aesthetic. The ceilings were quite high so credit where its due and I'm sure that gave the room the appearance that it was larger than it really was. It also seemed generally clean in contrast to some of the other more recent reviews I came across.

In summary, a very good example of style over substance. If that's your thing go for it but I suspect there are much better options at this price point.

Staff were so so smiley and friendly. Location is perfect. They gave us water when leaving, it was a nice gesture. The only negative comment is: The noise is coming so much from the room next door. And valet parking was so expensive, there isn’t any option you can park the car by yourself.
That’s why I gave 4 points..

Hi Josephine199224, Great to hear that you are visiting us at W Amsterdam soon. MAD FOX has closed back in April 2019. Our outdoor WET deck on the Exchange side is open year round, the pool with magnificent views of the Royal Palace is heated. If it's too cold outside though, not to worry, our Away Spa on the Bank side has a magnificent indoor pool in the former bank's vaults. Our resident DJs will be spinning in the W Lounge during the weekend. Plenty of opportunities to DETOX. RETOX. REPEAT. We are looking forward to welcoming you soon! Very best regards, Jens

It depends. Mr Porter (the rooftop steak restaurant) was pricey (€150 plus for two having two courses with sides and a couple of cocktails each). It was amazing food though. Rooftop bar cocktails were €15 plus. Not sure if they did food there as well.
