The Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam boasts a prime location that guests frequently applaud, nestled conveniently near Central Station and shielded from street noise. While the hotel's historic charm and decor are appreciated, some guests suggest a need for modernization, particularly in the spacious rooms which, despite their historic appeal, are criticized for lacking up-to-date amenities and comfort expected of a 5-star establishment.
The service quality appears inconsistent, with reports of both commendable assistance and unprofessional encounters. Cleanliness is a strong suit, especially in the rooms and spa area, although the value for money is questioned by many who express concerns about overpriced services.

Detailed Reviews
Decided to book our first trip away after the travel restrictions were lifted couldn’t find that many hotels open so chose this one for it’s location, which is a 5 minute walk from central station.
The rooms were very large with a television, nespresso coffee machine, mini bar, shower cubicle plus a huge bathtub.
There was a swimming pool, steam room & spa but we didn’t use any of these.
We stayed on a room only basis.
The hotel was lovely & quiet at night.
The hotel is very large & you can easily get lost in its long corridors.
The room was also very clean.

We stayed at the Gran Hotel in March 2020, we were really looking forward to our stay in Amsterdam as well as the stay in a historic architectural gem. However we were left a little underwhelmed and disappointed. We booked a Junior Suite which was not similar in anyway to the one shown on the website. For a five star hotel the quality and cleanliness was not up to scratch with the rooms needing some TLC such as scratches, dents, broken parts, torn bedding.
An old building can be old but kept up to scratch on the interior.
There was no whirlpool in the room as advertised which was a shame so we decided to go down to the wellness centre but the hot tub was out of order as well as the steam room. We were also never provided with any dressing gowns, these may sound petty but when you’re paying for quality you want quality.
Ending on a positive staff were very attentive and welcoming and the mini bar refills went down a treat.

Response from Amrath Amsterdam, General Manager at Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam
Responded Mar 25, 2020
Dear 305jakeh. Thank you for sharing your comments and experience with us. Your compliments about the staff and the mini-bar are appreciated and pleased that these contributed positively to your experience. It is regretted that your experience did not meet your expectations; especially pertaining to the torn-bedding. This is because we have recently introduced a system to monitor the condition of all linen to ensure that all guests enjoy bedding that is in-keeping with the five-star standard to which we strive to achieve all-round. Our stance on this is uncompromising so I would have liked to have known about the bedding in the room in which you stayed being torn at the time of your stay. Similarly, there is no reason why you should not have received bathrobes as this is a standard offering to our guests and by no means a "petty" issue. Your comments about the maintenance and cleanliness are noted and wished that we would have also known about these at the time of your stay. Regarding your room, our Front Office Team always endeavour to place guests in rooms that best match their preferences and this is subject to availability given the type of room that they have booked. Due to this historic nature of the hotel building all of the rooms are unique but am sorry that you were disappointed with the room in which you were placed and similarly would have liked to have addressed this during your stay. I also apologise for the hot-tub and steam rooms not working. These are currently undergoing major repairs and shall be in working condition in the near future. Should you ever be returning to Amsterdam and wish to give us a second chance it will be our pleasure to welcome you back and hope that we will see you again. With kind regards, Jesper Lauersen General Manager

We were defended upon as soon as we got through the door!! We arrived 4 hours before checkin and were made to feel amazingly welcome. Our bags were put into storage for us and we were offered use of the spa facilities until our room was ready. We chose to go for a walk and when we returned the welcome was extended again!! What a great welcome service. Our room was fantastic, we could have brought a dozen cats to swing around, it was such a grand affair with all the mod cons without removing from the grand style. Very nice on suite with a bath suitable for two..... The room and building itself was immaculate both inside and out, make sure you take time to check out the architecture on the outside.
The spa facilities were great after a long day walking around, they were very functional and again, very clean with copious amounts of towels for your use. I thoroughly recommend booking a treatment or two as the staff in the spa know their stuff, I never knew I had that many knots that needed kneading out!!
The hotel is located a mere 5 minutes walk from the central train station so transit from the airport is very easy and there is absolutely no need for a taxi. Most of central Amsterdam is a very short walk from the hotel, literally out the door, turn left and your in the main canal areas with numerous shops and attractions.
This was a great weekend away for us and it was made amazing by this hotel and the staff. What a great service and stay. Many thanks.

Honestly, i don’t know how the hotel got its 5 stars. The location is good but all the rest is overated !
Beware if you have a car, if the carpark is full you will walk 1.8 km from the nearest car park to get back to the hotel. If you have elderly people with you or young kids it can be a nightmare.
The staff is unpleasant and untrained if present at all
Nobody at the entrance most of the time, have you ever seen that ?
The lobby looks like a mac donalds entrance more than a 5 star hotel.
The matresses are full of bumps
No towel hangers in the bathroom
Cheap junk shower
Hot water not constant
Doors made with some cheap pine wood
Deco is cheap stensils...
The keys to rooms are all’damaged, we had to change rooms because keys don’t work
I would say it’s a 2 star hotel in a good location. If you’re looking for luxury go for a known branded hotel. This one is not good value for money and is misleading!!!!!

Response from Amrâth Amsterdam, General Manager at Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam
Responded Jul 20, 2020
Dear Olivier F. It is always appreciated to hear feedback about our guests’ stay at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam and we are sorry to hear that your stay did not meet the high-standards that you expected. The feedback from our guests is always appreciated as this allows us an opportunity to improve our service offerings. Had these been made known to us at the time of your stay have little doubt that the Front Office Team would have done their utmost, within the scope of their authority to address these concerns and apologise if these were not resolved to your satisfaction. As the hotel is housed in a historic shipping building can assure you that the decor, furniture and fittings are all genuine and authentic pieces from the 1910-1930's period at which time the building was built. For this reason the experience and offering is different to many other hotel counterparts and it is regretted if this did not appeal to you. As the entrance foyer is adorned with original wrought iron finshes, stone-crafted marble flooring and wall-paneling, stain-glass windows depicting the Dutch-East India Company sea-faring times and various wooden and stone-carved features, we have struggled to draw any comparison or close resemblance to which you have made reference. We also take this opportunity to clarify that we have a limited number of on-site parkings and in the event that our parking is full, we are more than glad to assist with advising our guests as to alternatives including at Amsterdam Central, the entrance of which is 700m away. I am sorry for any inconvenience that you experienced as a result of our parking being unavailable at the time of your stay. A hotel's five-star rating is achieved as a result of them complying to a list of stringent criteria and it is regretted that you felt that this was not the case with the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam. We are sorry that at the time of your stay, we experienced a problem with some of the room keys and for the inconvenience that this caused. As we are in the process of upgrading our hot-water supply system, regret that there may have been a minor disruption and understand that this was short-lived and quickly resolved. Your feedback about there being no towel hanging hooks in the bathroom is also noted and we are pleased to let you know that these have been fitted in the majority of our rooms and the room(s) in which you were accommodated may have been amongst the minority in which this is still pending. If you were to be visiting Amsterdam again and would like to consider giving us a second chance it would be our pleasure to welcome you back and ensure that you do receive the fine five-star service which many of our regular guests have grown to love and do hope to see you again. With kind regards, Jesper Lauersen General Manager

Pros: really friendly, helpful staff. Perfect location for exploring Amsterdam. Massive rooms.free minibar refilled daily.
Cons: outdated. Quite noisy. Spa and gym weren't great for five star. Cleaners came in when do not disturb sign was up. No gluten free options. The pizza on room service was dreadful. Chicken and chips meal came without any chips and mint tea came without any mint. Paid for a late check in and were still distrubed by cleaners who said reception hadn't told them. small things that made me think this is far from a five star hotel.

Dear Paul M, Thank you for making your comments known to us! I am pleased to hear that our staff was able to assist you in a friendly and helpful way during your time with us. We aim to deliver a 5 star service standard to all of our guests and we are happy to learn that we achieved this with you. I am also happy to hear that you were comfortable in the spacious room allocated to you with the complimentary minibar and that our central location was convenient for you. Having said that, I regret to hear about your negative impression of our Spa facilities and the quality offered with our roomservice. As for your comment on the housekeeping staff entering the room, I am very sorry to hear this! This unfortunate incident is not in line with the 5 star level service that we aim to provide here at the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused to you. I will make sure to communicate this with the departments in question to ensure this does not happen again. Thank you for bringing this to our attention! We hope that you will consider giving us a second chance to redeem ourselves from this experience and prove that we are able to provide our guests with the 5 star experience that so many have grown fond of throughout the years. Booked this hotel as a birthday treat for my husband. The lobby was small, so everyone could here you speck to receptionist when I was trying to keep it from my husband as it was a treat. The hotel has a pool which is a nice treat when you have been walking around all day cause you can walk in Amsterdam !!! Thank god the room was beside the lift because if not you can get lost really easy. The room was nice and the free mini fridge that is replaced everyday is really nice. It comes with 2 bottles of water, coke and beer also white and red wine. The hotel is 15 mins walk from the train station which is great to get to the airport. The hotel is walking distance from everything Anne Frank, Ice bar, red light and of curse pennys, but if you want to go to to the Heineken factory get the tram or a taxi, you can walk but about 45 mins. Would stay here again but only as a treat, expensive

Responded Aug 2, 2020
Dear 84lizm. It is always appreciated to hear feedback about our guests’ stay at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam and we thank you for taking the time and effort to share your experience and for your informative and descriptive review! From the historic nature of the building unfortunately there is not much that we can do to change the size of the lobby but appreciate your wanting to keep the birthday treat a surprise and apologise if this was ruined. Our Guest Relations services generally makes a note of when carefully planned occasions are not to be mentioned at the Front Office and hope that the cat was not let out of the bag. I am pleased to see that you had an opportunity to unwind in the beautiful swimming pool in our Wellness Centre and that you enjoyed the complimentary mini-bar which was in your room. Regarding the location of the room it is good to see that you enjoyed being close to the lift in an "easier to find" room. Due to the historic nature of the hotel building, the passages tend to be a bit more "maze-like" than the conventional "glass-box" hotel counterparts and am pleased that it was not a struggle to find the room in which you were accommodated. For the same reason every room is different and unique in its own special manner and the Front Office staff do their utmost to place guests in rooms that best match their preferences. Thank you for letting us know that we got it right with your stay! It is also good to know that you found the location of the hotel to be as convenient as you have described and shall certainly be very pleased to welcome you back to the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam. As hotel rates vary depending on the time ahead of one's stay that the booking is made, the time of the year of one's stay and the availability at the time of the booking, these factors are worth bearing in mind when planning a trip. Please feel free to contact us directly when planning your visit to ensure that you are receiving the best available rate as well as check our website and social media pages for specials that we run from time to time. Thank you once again for choosing to stay with us. With kind regards, Jesper Lauersen General Manager

I have mixed feelings about this hotel. I had to share my experience with my family as it’s an expensive mistake. We wanted to enjoy new year as a family in this hotel. Upon arriving after 2 hours going around in circles to find this hotel, the young guy who was at
the reception on new year’s eve, didn’t even make no eye contact and I don’t even know where to start. We were all very tired and I was mentally exhausted. I thought we would atleast be greeted in a good way. I asked twice as I booked my room and my kids room together and there’s just a door inbetween us, like in your home. The receptionist didn’t even looked at me and even communicate, all he said yes they are next to each other. Assuming that there was a language barrier we thought its the same thing we booked. Anyway I couldn’t even be bothered with him so went upstairs and the rooms were far apart. I mean I’ve never left my kids in another room. We are always together so this wasn’t happening. Husband went downstairs and we got a room which I’ve attached pictures. 4 single beds, freezing cold room, didn’t feel right at all. I mean do you call this a 5 stars. I’ve been to 4 star hotel and I must say i sometimes were asking why were they 4 as they were a different level. Anyway, called housekeeping and this guy was so kind and he did gave me blankets and heater. He was understanding and said he couldn’t do anything other than speak to receptionist. It was still cold the 3 nights spend. This housekeeping staff should have been at the reception and the young guy should be hiding himself. The staffs I don’t know, are they bored!? But only 1 or 2 were actually kind, the rest seemed bored and wanted to get rid. I didn’t dine as the hotel was so close to any shops around. It’s Only 5-10 mins walk. The spa and pool aren’t 5 stars, no lifeguard, after 8pm there’s no staffs. 2nd night the cleaner came to clean, this was so weird, as she ran quickly when I answered. I went to the door she said if we need anything angrily, i said no. But she switched the lights off while we were eating! Later in the night found out facewash gone missing. Again I couldn’t be bothered to go and see the reception. This hotel needs to do a lot of changes and improvements. For me it’s not a 5 star. However would say thank you to the girl who assisted us at the check out time.

Dear MoroKurdi, While I wish your experience with us would have been better, I want to thank you for sharing your valuable comments with us. Here at the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam we deem the feedback of our guests as crucial means to improve on our services. I am so sorry to hear that the service your received at check in was not up to your expectations. Here at the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam we pride ourselves on our good service which have caused many of our guests to return, yet it is apparent that we did not achieve this in your particular situation. For this, we sincerely apologize! As for your comments on the room allocated to you and the request you had placed, I would like to inform you that when a guest has a room preference, we of course try our utmost to accommodate them in this, yet these requests are subject to occupancy and therefore cannot be guaranteed. In your case our occupancy did not allow us to allocate you to a connecting room with king beds. We sympathize that this must have been frustrating, especially regarding the temperature in your room. Regarding your comment on the housekeeping experience, I will make sure to alert this to the Housekeeping manager and this is not in line with the 5 star level service that we aim to provide here at the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused to you. We hope that you will consider giving us a second chance to redeem ourselves from this experience and prove that we are able to provide our guests with the 5 star experience that so many have grown fond of throughout the years. If you do, please book with us directly for the best rates and most complete information on the hotel and its surroundings. Decent hotel in a good location. Unfortunately this also comes with the trade off of having no car park. I left the car in the underground car park next to the hotel at a cost of around €20 per day.
Rooms were tidy if slightly run down and beds were reasonably comfortable. My bathroom for example had multiple cracked and loose tiles where grout was completely missing. Something that wouldn’t be too difficult to repair and would make a difference to the room.
Hotel staff were friendly and helpful whenever we needed assistance, directions or somewhere to leave our bags.
Breakfast buffet is not recommended, it’s a basic “continental” spread consisting of meat and cheese, cereal toast etc… as a veggie there wasn’t a great deal on offer. I mostly had toast and scrambled eggs and a bit of granola.
Due to the location the rooms tended to be a little noisy at night from the surrounding bars and restaurants.

The building is an architectural delight. It’s location is perfect. Very near the Amsterdam Centraal Station and within walking distance of dozens of restaurants, cafes and places of interest. The Hop on Hop off bus and canal cruise are located a few minutes away. The front desk personnel were all very friendly and helpful. Which turned out to be a blessing because we ran into a problem when checking into our room. Our original room was not ready upon our return around 5:30pm or so. We were shown 3 different rooms by one of the managers and settled on one. Upon returning from dinner we found the room to be very cold (the windows are huge and covered by ceiling to floor drapes). Called the front desk and within moments someone was there to figure out why it was so cold. Turns out one of the windows was not properly shut. He also checked the radiator and brought us another comforter and heater. The room itself was spacious and had an old world decor with wainscoting and beamed ceiling. The 4 poster bed was very comfortable. The glass marble bathroom was huge with both a walk-in shower and deep tub. Housekeeping was a little so so. The glass shelves, wine glasses and coffee cups in the cabinet were a little dusty. Had to ask for soap a couple of times because at the end of the day we would return and there was none left in the bathroom. The room stayed a bit chilly and we used the heater every day. I informed the front desk that they should double check the radiators in the room. We had dinner several times in their bar/restaurant and found the food to be very tasty. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. When you stay, do take the Saturday morning tour of the building. It is a beautiful building inside and out with lots of history. Would we return to the Grand Amrâth Hotel? Yes, all in all we had a good experience and enjoyed our stay.

Dear Brownstone76. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share yourexperience about your stay at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam. We greatly appreciate the positive feedback about the location of the hotel and the building itself. Although I am sorry that you needed to move rooms during the course of your stay, am pleased that the Front Office staff were able to place you in a room in which you were able to enjoy a comfortable night's rest. Many guests have a preference for our larger rooms as along with the superb views, they find them to be "airy" and spacious although at times, especially with the wind at the time of your stay, the occasional late winter cold-snap sometimes makes these rooms a little chillier. I am pleased that we were able to provide you with the additional heaters to ensure that you had a good night's rest and help with closing the window. Thank you for your constructive feedback about the house-keeping and the provision of amenities, which I apologise were not in-keeping with the high-standard to which we strive to achieve. We are pleased that you enjoyed your experience at the Bar Lounge restaurant; both in terms of the food and the service that you received. As you have mentioned, the historic tour of the hotel building is well worth-it and we also recommend coupling the historic tour with high-tea, the offerings of which we have recently revived. Please be sure to inform us ahead of your returning to stay at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam as it will be our pleasure to welcome you back and make sure that we go the extra mile to ensure that your stay is five-star in every sense of the word! With kind regards. Jesper Lauersen General Manager

Spent a small fortune on 3 nights here with my Stepdaughter. Although it is a very beautiful building we found the room uncomfortable, very poor lighting, the shower door was broken, no bottle openers provided for the mini bar. I also brought my own tea bags from home and the cleaners removed them!
I had already made the hotel aware that I have a dairy allergy. When we came for breakfast we were expected to pay €27 each, there was harder it any food that was dairy free and when I asked if the chef could make me something the answer was no. I waiting 20mins for a sloppy poached egg. All the hot food was cold and other than one member of staff that was very helpful I found the staff to lack interest. Needless to say we didn’t pay for our breakfast. Stayed in much nicer cheaper hotels in Amsterdam. Won’t be returning or recommending
