I arrived at the hotel on Saturday 16th October 2021 to be amazed at how beautiful the decor was in the reception areas, so i thought this was well worth the money i spent until i went to my room. The room was very cold and had a nasty smell of which i thought was sewage. I mentioned this to the reception staff and they sent a cleaner to my room whilst i was out with my son. When i arrived back to my room the cleaner was still there, she said it was the shower drain that had not been cleaned, admittedly the room didnt smell anymore at that time. That samne evening i weent down to the wellness centre and was greeted by a young couple cavorting around in the pool, shouting, screaming etc, having fun. I took myself to the steam room as i felt very intimidated by this behaviour and wanted to keep out of there way. The steam room door was open and no steam at all so i turned it on from the outside and just as it warmed up it turned off again, i tried to turn back on but it wouldnt work so i decided to go to the whirl pool and that was stone cold, i was told it was only a whirlpool and not meant to be hot but it was a Jacuzzi whirlpool ?? and was supposed to be hot. I left there very disappointed and far from refreshed. I went back to my cold room as there was not heating and the thermostat on the wall wasn't working, i went back to reception and the sent someone up to turn on the hidden radiators which were boxed in beneath the window. I was told to turn them off when room had warmed up. I managed to do this but the griddle was very heavy that i had to move and i had to reach deep into the cover to turn off radiators. I suffer with a serious back condition and also have emphysema, and this task did me no favours. When i finally went to sleep i woke to a horredous smell , the same sewage smell as the previous night. i cleaned the drain myself to the extent of it making me vomit. When i visited my son on day 2 i told him about all this and he told me to complain as it is alot of money i spent on this hotel. I felt embarrassed to tell anyone at reception as it seemed that all i have done since being there was complain so i sent an email instead asking if i could have a refund so i could find somewhere else more suited to my needs and health. The response came back and they upgraded me to another room which was bigger than previous, again it was cold and took a long time to heat up. The bedding smelt as if it hadn't been washed, pillows smelt of sweaty heads and had dribble stains on them so i slept on the bed on my clothes. the bath took over an hour to fill, that was when the water was eventually back on (they had no water most of the day/evening either so was being dealt with). When i was laying on the bed i was sure i saw a rat/large mouse run across the room, i was too scared to move and look. I stayed out the following day all day as i didnt want to go back. This was the worse experience i have ever had in a hotel and being that i was alone made it even worse. I didnt feel that i could complain anymore than i did on my first night so i just kept quiet. i wouldnt even put this as a 2 star hotel. I came home to the uk in alot of pain and very upset to the point of crying due to spending this amount of money on what should of been a restful few days. Jenette Mace

I chose this hotel for 2 main reasons, because it seemed like a reasonable price for a 5 star and because it was a location with good transport links. I regretted it almost immediately after we arrived and the first thing I did was double check on the internet that it was a 5 star hotel and look at the photos again. We were let out of the taxi onto an uneven road outside the hotel, to be met by nobody. We struggled our way up the steep steps and through the revolving door, to be met by nobody. We were unsure whether what we were in was in fact the lobby as it had no feeling or character of such. We stood around for a while and then I walked passed the stairway and into a restaurant area where there was also nobody. No staff, no customers, and in the daytime. I thought we had walked into a disused apartment building or some obscure museum, when a member of staff finally appeared and I queried whether we were in the right place, and sadly we were. We said we had just arrived and were looking to check in and the staff member said they would ask one of the reception staff to come. I commented it would be useful to have staff on reception and he kindly agreed with me. After the tedious check in process, we were told where to find the elevator and were offered no assistance with our luggage. We found what seemed like an elevator out of an old silent movie. It was so small that as the door slammed behind us (first elevator I’ve experienced without automatic doors) there was barely room for the two of us and our luggage. Down the red corridors that felt like they were closing in on us, we found our room. The door frame, door handle and the door all looked like they’d taken a battering over the years with no maintenance. Horribly depressing colors in the room, carpet, wallpaper, curtains and furniture all looked like they were competing for the most depressing and miserable taste. Bathroom was about the size of a small customer toilet in Starbucks. Worst of all the huge windows were facing the sun letting all the sunlight turn the room into an oven, which would not be an issue in most other hotels as you just turn on the air conditioning, but this hotel has none! Later that night we were kept awake by the noise of another couple having sex which loudly came through the connecting door in the room! I suspect this hotel is probably on the way out and they’ve given up trying to make any renovations or trying to hire and train appropriate staffing levels. They must be holding onto a rating that they received many years prior. The impression they give out is that nobody there cares. Thank God I initially only booked one night and we swiftly moved to another hotel for the remainder of our time in Amsterdam. When we arrived at the next hotel and we mentioned where we’d come from, they told us they receive several guests every month like us who come to them because they can’t spend more than 1 night in the Amrath!

If you're a person of colour then find another hotel. The treatment we received in comparison to our friends who were white was not right. Really wish we'd booked somewhere else. From the outset, rooms were the same price but very different. Not all are good quality. It was both our birthdays, they received complimentary wine, we didn't however. The attitude of some of the people working there towards us was way off too.

Dear 511so, While I wish your experience with us would have been better, I want to thank you for sharing your valuable comments with us. Here at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam we deem the feedback of our guests as crucial means to improve on our services. For this reason, we greatly appreciate your taking the time and effort to share your opinion. I do feel I should point out that although this is not the level service we aim to provide, I am confident that the cause of this substandard service was not based on racial discrimination or any kind of prejudice toward race or skin color. Here at the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam we do not only welcome guests from all over the world, with all types of race and skin colors, but we are also a very racially diverse team. I am sorry that you felt this way during your stay, as we always aim to make all of our guests feel equally welcome and accepted. The Front Office staff always try their best to accommodate guests in a room that has features which are best match their preferences but this is always subject to availability and regrettably requests for specific rooms and/or features can never be 100% guaranteed. However, due to the historic nature of the hotel building, every room at the Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam is unique and special in its own right. I hope that despite this, that the remainder of your stay with us was pleasant and that we will be welcoming you back to Amsterdam again! Kind regards, Jesper Lauersen General Manager

To say that this is the worst and most incorrectly stated 5 star hotel I have ever stayed in is probably the safest statement I'll ever make. I could list off my complaints about this hotel for days but I'll just go with what's at the forefront of my mind. Dirty - the bed sheets often have stains and hairs left on them even despite having been freshly changed and the bed freshly made. The towels often have stains and holes and tears (they are folded and left by the window as the bathroom doesn't even have a towel rack!). There is dust everywhere, especially around the windows and curtains, there was a big coating of dust up the wall beside the window and when I opened the minibar (which was also dirty inside) there were huge clumps of dust beside the fridge. Noisy - the hotel is situated on a main road and there is no sound proofing, you will get woken up by noisy motorcycles and traffic at all hours. The walls are thin and sound carries, I could clearly hear the conversations and moving around in the room next to me. Smelly - a very pungent smell emanates from the shower drain, that smell gets stronger with the longer you go between taking a shower to flush water down the drain. I could smell cigarette smoke and cannabis coming in under the door from where other guests were smoking (which they weren't supposed to as it's non-smoking, but nobody really cares in this place despite my complaining about it). Terrible old room that is in fact an office - the room is stuffy and old, there is no air conditioning which makes it feel like being locked in a cupboard. A fan is supplied which does nothing as it only recirculates the stale air in the room. The carpet is a horrible red with curtains that clash, the color combinations are depressing to the extreme. The most obvious thing is that the room does not look or feel like a hotel room, it is in fact clearly designed as an office for the original building and then once the hotel has taken over they've thrown a bed in there and called it a hotel room. Bad service - when you say 5 star hotel perhaps the first image that comes to mind of the way you walk in would be of a grand lobby to be greeted by first class service. Here the lobby is nothing more than a dreary old stair case, you wonder around the vacant entrance until you discover one staff member sat in an office opposite browsing the internet who has no interest in you. I felt as though the staff had an attitude as though I was bothering them. I really could go on for days but I have a word limit in this review and I think you get the idea. This hotel is a disaster. It plays on the fact that it is in a heritage building and opposite the Central Station, and were it not for these facts I'm sure it would have shut down long ago. I can't imagine anybody being satisfied with this place at the current advertising of a 5 star hotel at the prices they charge. If it was advertised as a 2-3 star hotel for 50 Euros a night it might be more reasonable, however I would still complain about the uncleanliness and the dirty towels and sheets (it wasn't a one off, 7 towels out of 10 were either stained or had holes and tears in them). Truly a hotel from hell. Never again.
