My boyfriend and I stayed for 3 nights in the Thorbecke Hotel in Aug 05, we chose the hotel because it had rooms, cheap, last minute and is in a good location. The hotel is perfectly situated for seeing the city, just off the bustling Remdrandtplein with tram links. The rooms are all above a bar downstairs and the one we had was definately clean but reflected the price we paid for it with respect to furniture, view, quality of decor etc. The beds were very comfortable though and we found that being on the 3rd floor it wasn't too noisy at night. Breakfast is served by the very polite hotel staff and consisted of fresh orange juice, tea/coffee, basket of bread with jams, plate of sliced cheese and a boiled egg each. This was definately ample and the bread was nice etc.

I would certainly recommend the hotel to any young travellers on a budget because it is so ideally placed and because the staff were pleasent, rates cheap and rooms adequate.

Not as good quality a hotel in reality as it appeared in the photos.

First, upon arrival we were expected to pay upfront - not a good sign. And paying by credit card meant a 6% additional charge. I'd seen a free drink in the downstairs bar mentioned but had to ask before he scribbled it down on a card for me to hand in that evening.

The room itself was no more than adequate - and seeing as I'd requested the best view possible and a double bed, not a twin and got neither adhered to - that is possibly being generous. The view was mainly a wall about 10 feet away, and two single mattresses on a double bed frame just led to us sliding apart in the night. I also experienced bites, though as my girlfriend didn't I'll put that down to mosquitoes rather than bed bugs.

Worst of all though, the breakfast. You'd assume you'd get a continental brekkie of a selection of breads/rolls, meats and cheeses. At this place, it was white or brown bread sliced as thinly as possible, 3 or 4 slices of processed cheese and no meat at all. There was a hard-boiled egg though if you like that (I don't). The ultimate example of their poor quality approach though was the morning that no milk appeared for the coffee. When I politely enquired I was told it was 'run out, finished', and it wasn't as if we were demanding a late breakfast or anything special. Surely any self-respecting hotel would just run out and get some if possible - or at the very least explain and apologize about the situation prior to me asking if I could have some assuming it was just an error on their part.

On the bright side, the location was good but thats about it.

Overall, it wasn't a bad hotel but for what we paid (85 euro per night inc cc charge) it certainly wasn't a good one and I'd advise people to look elsewhere.

We booked this place because it was central and good value at £176 for 2 nights. We stayed an hour and left.
It smelt of vomit and Swede, the balcony (advertised) was the space on top of a roof filled with fag butts, urine, lost shoes, empty bottles and general crap. I have never walked outof a place until now. We didn't even try to get a refund, honestly we were happy to pay that not to stay there.
If your only intention in Amsterdam is to find a place under cover you can spew, book away but if u hav any concerns for hair in your bed, dirty scuff marks on the wall and a toilet that smells like 5 years of regret and puke, this might be your match made in heaven. Don't have the same experience! Em and John :)

Well the place was bearable, but rather depressing. Don’t be fooled by the ‘breakfast included’ as it was meagre beyond a doubt and needless to say, we did not bother going down the second morning. The room I stayed in was a double ensuite. It was very musky and just oozed uncleanliness. Although the man who was at the desk was polite enough, you couldn’t ignore the shifty look of him. I went in September with my boyfriend at 100 euro a night for the two of us. We originally booked three nights but decided to leave it at two as soon as we saw the reception area. The only good thing about the place was the ease at which the dodgy looking man at the desk allowed us to cancel our third night. Anyway long story short, the room was shabby, the breakfast did not deserve the name breakfast, and there was an underlying general unsafe feeling in the place and the worst thing was, it wasnt that cheap. I would never return there or recommend it to anyone. and yes i also had to pay upfront and was not told about the free drink so remember to ask

Well where do i start.......?

it looked nice in the pictures

its situated above a bar which does not shut untill 5am yes 5 in the morning lets put it this way its good if you want to party all night! do not expect to get any sleep and i mean we were on the 3rd floor i feel sorry for the people on the floor above the bar itself.
you can literally have a party in your room using the music from downstairs!

we moved after 2 nights to the "artemis hotel" (now that IS a nice hotel) as none of us were getting sleep and you dont get your money back so its not even worth a try

breakfast was ok if you like bread jam and cheese oh and a boiled egg GREAT

the hotel isnt too badly placed it comes out in to a nice square where you can sit and chill with a beer

if your hungry walk down the road to "wok to walk" hmmm i wish we had those in England!

room are very small and basic you do get a television we didnt have a romote to match it though although you do get bbc 1 or 2

Reading the poor rated reviews on Thorbecke Hotel I feel it's only fair to provide a balanced opinion on my stay:

Firstly, I stayed as part of a large group of twentysomethings (and some older gents) as part of a Stag weekend in August 2013. After reading some of the opinions on TripAdvisor I felt apprehensive; so I'll outline the pros and cons of the Thorbecke Hotel are.

Negatives

The Stairs- The stairs in the hotel are admittedly a bit of a taxing challenge to negotiate; especially if you suffer from a corpulent body structure (like some of our party) or have spend all day and night sampling the local Amsterdam ales and delicacies (like all of our party). Admittedly, some kind of elderly persons stair lift or simple winch device installed by the hoteliers may rectify this issue.

The Breakfast- Yes, the breakfast is very basic. Bread, cheese and orange juice are the specials of the day, but let's be realistic... there is a whole city with wonderful bars and restaurants to taste and absorb the local cuture. Perhaps visit a local coffeeshop and enjoy a "flapjack and a schigarette" or "pipe and a waffle" for lunch to cure any hunger pangs.

Being above a pub/nightclub- The only issue with this is that the bouncers are a bunch of clowns who get in your way on the way up the stairs. For more information on the stairs visit first section.

Positives

Clean- The room we had was clean if a bit dated; (think 1980's American comedy decor) but laminate flooring which was cleaned but housekeeping staff and clean bed sheets.

Location- This is the main positive for Thorbecke hotel. You are right in the mixer of the nightlife; get out there and enjoy it.

Innovation- The room we had enjoyed some kind of patio/conservatory/greenhouse arrangement, which is great for banging broads in if you enjoy that kind of thing.

Shower Rooms- After a night of dirty debauchery. a powerful shower is just the ticket. Thorbecke provided this with as much water as you like with no extra charge.

Beds- Yes! There are beds. Exactly what one requires for resting or engaging in coitus with one of the friendly local females.

Summary-

Thorbecke is a hotel which is great if you're more interested if going out and enjoying the delights of Amsterdam rather than sitting in your room pulling your pudding. If you are looking to enjoy yourself and have a bit of a party, no need to worry about noise complaints or if someone is sick on the linen. However if its a romantic weekend with your beloved or bit on the side; stop being a tightwad and book somewhere classy.

Booked this hotel for a one night stay, recognising it was budget and would be basic. Returned to our room after a great night out to find RATS on the bed!! Absolutely disgusting! Duty manager was useless, offered to 'shoo them away' and that was about it. Left the hotel immediately and ended up sleeping on a bench at the Airport. This place should be shut down. DO NOT STAY HERE!!

worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune of staying in, it seemed like an abandoned building then to be greeted by a filthy wet carpet and very rude staff, room had a window which opened into the next room, loud extremely dirty blood stains on bed sheets and hairs everywhere breakfast was just toast, would not recommend to anyone ever!

After reading poor reviews I still decided to book this hotel as it was super cheap and very central. Our room had everything we needed. It was clean and a good. It's true that the stairs are steep and there is some noise from the clubs but I would definitely stay here again

Had booked here for one Saturday night for around 80 euros.

We arrived at 11am and they kindly looked after our luggage so we could spend the day in Amsterdam and check in later. We did this. We came back to check in at roughly 6pm. There was nothing to the check in, simply confirming our surname and been given our keys. The staff were pleasant and apart from the stairs being insanely steep there was nothing to actually complain about.
Our room however was a hell hole. It was two floors up, the single glazed window had been left open so it was cold. We closed this immediately and it was disgusting rotting wood, and still let a breeze and noise in. If the window was the only problem then I wouldn't complain. But the shower/bathroom was like I haven't ever seen before, they cannot call that place a hotel. I've stayed in many a hostel and don't mind for a cheap price something a little substandard but this was grim. The tiles already had muddy footprints before we had even gone into it, the shower curtain was mouldy.for us, what was the worst part of the bathroom was the lack of lighting. I went down and asked for a better light or a different room with a better bathroom. The man at the reception told me there was a lamp by the bed and to use this. So I went back up the two stories to find there wasn't a lamp. So I went back down and told him this. After much time and a bit of arguing, he decided to change the lightbulb for a stronger one and he also gave us some hand towels (towels not provided and don't even have large towels available). However the room was even worse with light, it was mouldy and damp and to be honest just dirty. Only one socket and a broken tv. It was nothing like the photos at all and doesn't reflect the rate we paid. We could have paid less and stayed in a nicer hostel. Went back to reception and apologised and told him how unhappy we were and how the photos were not anything like the real thing. He agreed and said that the photos were of the apartments (which they don't own anymore). I told him they were on the website next to the rooms and under the hotel name but he wouldn't listen. Oh and wifi is NOT available anywhere but the reception, I complained about this and he argued that 'throughout the accommodation' like stated on website, meant just the reception.
We left, without a refund (despite arguing and we will take this further) and stayed at a nearby NH hotel for 100 euros and it was exactly what we expected and nothing that this hotel was... Friendly and polite staff, wifi, clean, tv, nice shower. Simple but clean.

I thoroughly tell anyone not to stay here unless they want nothing more than a damp bed for the night.
