Detailed Reviews
Bastion Deluxe Hotel Dam Amsterdam Centrum Noord is located in a peaceful area a 5 minute bus ride away from the Centraal station. Despite the contradictory information on the Internet, the hotel is only a short bus trip away on busses 32,33 which run very frequently both directions. There is also a large shopping centre (IJ-haven) located a short walk away from the hotel. Our stay was great, and the rooms were spaciously designed. The deluxe room included a bath tub and large tv. The service in the hotel was fast, despite the reception desk clearly understaffed at evening time. The hotel should also reconsider its breakfast as it is too expensive for holiday makers. Offering free breakfast would make this hotel a clear alternative to any hotel in Amsterdam. Fully recommend!

My friend and I stayed at this particular Bastion Hotel in 2008 for 7 days (that was the plan). The service was great the staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed them. The hotel was clean and the beds were comfy. (2 single beds were great for my friend and I but would not have been acceptable for my husband and I) Access to the internet in the lobby was helpful for keeping in touch with family and also checking itineraries for the next part of our trip.the hotel was undergoing some external upgrades but the noise did not effect our stay. The location was not in the midst of everything but you could get to all the action in minutes on a short bus ride. (We purchased multi-day transportation passes for the city transportation services)
All in All we had a great first 6 days! We were headed to Switzerland the next day by euro-rail. We decided to go have a quick dinner, come back and pack up for the next days trip. We got back from dinner and somebody had climbed the scaffolding on the back of the building and pushed in our window and took the whole safe out of room, the safe was not secured properly, but "hidden" in a closet. In it was our passports and my friends entire wallet. We went across the street (literally) to the police substation to get the police and it took 45 minutes because nobody actually mans that particular station. We finally got them, they said they would have to come back the next day and take prints etc.etc. We had to stay another night, and pay for it. The manager did give us free meals.
We did eventually get replacement passports in Bern, Switzerland. The consulate in Amsterdam was horrible and unhelpful, it was like being robbed of something even more valuable than the passports ~ dignity and hope! They actually made us feel like the criminals!
Upon our return to the US I tried to contact Bastion Hotels to discuss our incident at their hotel and could not get in touch with them in any way shape or form. For months I tried. They had all my info, and were aware of the incident and never contacted me either. This lack of concern and professionalism by the company itself will keep us from ever staying at another Bastion Hotel anywhere.
Thankfully I took travel insurance for myself (my friend skipped it) and I was reimbursed by my policy for most of the inconvenience, including the replacement passport, extra hotel nights in Amsterdam and Bern, and extra meals and train travel. Thank you CSA and my friends Tom and Don for insisting I get travel insurance!
Moral of this review: If the safe is not nailed down, don't trust it! And ask why it isn't! Buy trip insurance, it was less than $80 and worth every penny!! If traveling abroad leave $120 with a trusted family member or friend so the consulate can call them for you and request they wire the money directly to them. They will not allow you to make a call, nor will they accept anything but cash from you!!!(I had my Chase Master Card, they would not take it) Oh and you can not receive a Western Union transfer in another country with out a passport.

The hotel was ok, close to the bus stop of Bus 32 and 33 that end at amsterdam central station, about a 10 minutes drive - though don't expect to get seats. The busses leave every 7 to (night) 15 minutes until 1:00 pm.
Due to the holiday season (shortly before eastern) it was the best value hotel we could get (we looked for a quiet three star hotel not to far from the city.
Breakfeast - when booked through Expedia - has to be ordered extra at 12 EUR per day per person. The hotel offers a standard buffet with continental and warm breakfast. We only booked it on the day we left. Breakfeast offers in Amsterdam City are a lot cheaper, just as good tasting and a lot more interesting.
The room (Nr. 40) was clean and with enough space for the two of us. It looks out onto a quiet street. If you have a light sleep Nr. 40 ist not that good due to clapping corridor doors. Fellow guests were generally quiet as well.
The In-Room-Safe was closed and they didn't manage to open it during our 4-night-stay. So our things were kept in the reception safe. My Laptop (about 35 cm wide) wouldn't have fitted into the safe anyway.
Free Wifi worked and with sufficient speed as well.
About ecology: Towels are changed every day, they should stop that, it's an unnessecary waste of water and detergent. I don't know about the bedclothes. Same thing with soap.
Staff was friendly to neutral, but helpful (though we didn't need them very often).

It was a very disappointing stay at Bastion Noord Amsterdam, I have stayed in other Bastion properties before and this one is the worst I have stayed in. Cleanliness is very bad, corridors were dirty and with a smell of tobacco (staff was smoking outside at the end of the corridor with the door open). During my whole stay, they didn't clean the corridors for 4 days (the same dirt was lying there for 4 days) and they did not clean my room either, neither make up my bed during my whole stay, I also found some hairs in the bathroom. Breakfast was terrible, when food was finished on the buffet they simply do not replace it, so you pay 15 EUR per person for breakfast but if the guests before you finish the cheese, eggs, bacon, fruit or bread you won't be not able to get it anymore. I came in to breakfast on a Saturday at 09AM (breakfast until 10.30AM) and the eggs and cheese were finished. Also, on weekdays breakfast is until 9AM which I found very early. Location is convenient, public transportation to the city takes only 15 min. and there are some restaurants around.

At check out time I felt harassed by the receptionist asking me personal question of my stay. I asked him for invoice and replied the printer is dead?
By email. Email not working. He even obligated me to pay 50 euro tourist fee for check out because the municipality is asking for it when I wanted to pay his reply was only cash. Because is for municipality? Strange!!
Pay to much for small stay. I was in room 77

Why and same with cash because terminal not working middle age man manager please let these terminal work and why another fee? i have send an email to complain until now nothing.

I will never come back here again!! The manager shows no emotion and was not helpful! Furthermore, I left the room earlier because the beds were not good, the toilet was still dirty, the windows were full of spider webs, the hallways smelled, the food was terrible. My business and people will never come here again first and last. You have to pay attention to what kind of managers you hire. Paid a lot and didn't get an invoice because the printer was acting strangely. €290 for a night? Two people with tourist tax? All paid in cash. At least provide an invoice by email.

Overall the cleanliness levels were not good. The hotel room floor was not very clean, like it had not been hoovered, and the walls had stains on them. The bathroom smelled of urine. The sheets of the bed were clean and the bed was comfortable.

I went to Amsterdam with a good friend hoping to have a fine time and see some sights. We booked last minute, and all the good hostels had no vacancies, so we decided to spend a little extra on a decent-looking hotel.
Big. Mistake.
We traveled all day and were exhausted, and by the time finally got to the front desk at 10pm, we were falling over. All we wanted was to check in and get a good night's sleep. But the man at the front desk was talking to another employee for what felt like twenty minutes, until finally I lost it and demanded a key. He gave us a real attitude, and had us fill out forms and went back to chatting.
The next morning was alright. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel that takes you into the center of Amsterdam, so it's not that inconvenient. When we returned after a long day and night, my friend and I exchanged one of those "did they even clean the room" looks. Questionable.
We stayed up very late, and decided we would sleep in until 11 the next morning. Well, that didn't happen because we were woken up at SEVEN IN THE MORNING by the sound of a JACKHAMMER.
Yeah. They were doing constuction at SEVEN IN THE MORNING right down the hall from our room. I'm talking power drills, chainsaws, you name it, we heard it. Our bedframes were vibrating. I went to the front desk to complain, and they did NOTHING. They did not even offer us free breakfast.
I asked to speak to the manager, and the girl at the front desk said I couldn't. She didn't speak English that well, and just kept saying, "No, no you can't talk to manager." She refused to do anything, and we were sooo angry.
I highly reccomend staying away from this hotel. The food is bad, the location is fairly poor, and the decor is drab. Worst of all, the staff are unreliable, self-important, and act as if the guests are a pesky chore in addition to their jobs.
