Don't know other prices of hostels in Amsterdam at this time of year but seemed a lot. 27€ a night in a 20 bed dorm. Showers a bit weak. But breakfast was filling, mostly quite clean, sold combination locks for the lockers and very central location.

This was my first experience at a hostel but I'd read about them and spoken to friends who had been to hostels so I knew what to expect and what not. The showers were spacious enough and really clean, rooms were neat and clean also, the food was nice, especially the hot breakfast they offer. The cafeteria has some tables... More

This hostel felt like summer camp. The people (more so the younger people than the older visitors) were very friendly. I made friends within 5 minutes of getting to my room. The big dorms were pretty clean, though sometimes the bathrooms were a bit damp, and the 4 person rooms were also fine, though my sheets had a few holes... More

Shelter City is a nice hostel, with friendly staff and a decent location. Whilst we didn't mind, we were quite surprised that the "christian hostel" that we were staying in was just off the main strip of the Red Light District and that a few doors down from us on the same street there were women in windows. This wasn't... More

The Shelter city was our first experience in a hostel and it proved to be a good experience. The location was relatively clean. We stayed in a 16-bed all girls room and they lockers but if you want to charge your phone you need to leave it with the front desk overnight. They provide you with a ticket and you... More

At first, Shelter City seemed like a great place right in the middle of the RLD. However, there was a mistake of some sort with our booking, and SC cancelled our reservation without having contacted us first. So, imagine our surprise as we arrive to the hostel, and find out that we couldn't stay there. This resulted in three 18... More

Very nice and clean hostel. Staff is great and helpful with whatever you need, location cannot be better: it's very central and everything is at walking distance. Rooms were clean with ensuite toilet, bed lights and lockers. There are just one or two sockets in the room so if you need to charge your devices you need to leave it at... More

We were a little put off by the fact that this hostel is a Christian one (they have evening prayer and everything) but after staying here we realised that this had no real impactt on our stay and no one pushed religion on us at all. The hostel was clean, friendly and literally a 1 min walk to the red... More

Shelter City is a christian hostel so it was a quite and cosy place. Even though I am not religious I really enjoyed the staying. Staff was very helpful, everything was clean and people were nice. Location is amazing just in the center of the city and the next street is the red light district.

This was our first stop on a two week tour of Europe. Our first hostel ever to stay in. We were SO happy to have had this one to 'break us in' hehe. I felt so safe, and welcomed by everyone here. Great rooms, so so clean, and I loved the fact they had a bag room for us after... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
