I stayed one night at Shelter City hostel. The staff there are friendly and very accommodating, and they go out of the way to make your stay awesome. They will store and charge your phones, tablets or laptops at the reception FOC, which is very much appreciated! It was also very nice to have free breakfast in the morning. I... More

This hostel is very comfortable and clean. It's quite and doesn't allow alcohol nor drugs. I did enjoy my stay here. It was a great place to get away from all the partying in Amsterdam when i needed to recover. Be warned this is a Christian hostel. Which at first I thought o no, but it turned out to be... More

The location is ideal. Neat and tidy hostel with free morning breakfast. They have a beautiful garden where you can sit and relax. The only flipside is that we got room in third floor where carrying suitcase was impossible. Given this is a volunteer based system there was no help and we kept bags in store area along with other... More

This was an okay stay. The reception staff were friendly. The breakfast was actually pretty nice, and they also give you a free hot drink. The rooms were extremely small. I was staying in a room with four beds and felt very cramped. There were hardl places to store my luggage. Otherwise this hostel did the job but was nothing... More

I stayed in a 20 person female dorm. There were limited outlets in the room although the hostel does offer a free charging station at the front desk but they were always full. Our room was on the ground floor and security was not great. Once in through the front door, there are no locks on dorm rooms so anyone... More

There are positives and negatives to this place. Firstly, it is true to its description. If you are looking for a drug and alcohol free Christian hostel, then this is the place for you. The hostel offers church services and bible studies. The hostel is clean and also very well located (in the red light district). The breakfast is really... More

Amsterdam was our second stop on a 3 week backpacking trip. We walked into the Shelter to a secure door and kind smiling faces of the front desk staff. They were relaxed which is very important when dealing with stressed travelers. They introduced themselves and checked us in without a single problem. We also had train tickets delivered to them... I stayed here with three friends and the volunteers here kind of pushed a bit of Christianity on you but it was the cleaner that we found odd! When he came to clean the room, we weren't ready so he waited outside and we spoke to him for a minute before we left and when we got back some of... More

This hostel is in a great location, has great security, amazing free breakfast in the morning, staff were excellent and facilities were very clean! The hostel is within walking distance of most attractions, and of the central train station. They offer a wide range of activities for those who practice religion, but anyone can stay there and feel comfortable.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
