we spent a weekend in the bulldog. staff is unfriendly, security is harsh an very unfriendly even when we told hin that we are guests of the hotel! the breakfast is lousy, the rooftol is nice but closes at 11pm. the whole hotel is grubby and expensive. you get cheaper hostels at much bettet quality if you just leave the... Hi There, Our only 1 * star review in 2016. Its hard to understand that every single staff member was unfriendly to yu. The reviews that precede and follow your review are very positive about the staff here. In fact on most review sites, our staff along with the location are where we are rated highest. We would love the... More

The hostel in the middle of the city centre. It's walking distance to everything! We walked to the Anne Frank House, Vondelpark, Van Gogh and Rijks Museum, I Amsterdam letters, the Fault In Our Stars bench... the list goes on. It's also in the midst of restaurants, coffee shops and the Red Light District. We flew to Amsterdam and took... More

Hi, Thank you for your review. I am not so happy to hear that you found some of the staff rude. This is entirely unacceptable and hopefully you just caught someone on a bad day. The vast majority of our guests enjoy the staff, so my sincerest apologies if anyone was rude to you. If you find something unacceptable you... More

In the heart of Amsterdam. We booked this place as a cheap trip away for a few days. The price was €33 for bed and breakfast per night. We were in a mixed dorm for 9 people. The security - you need to have a "Hoyle passport" with you at all times which is a good idea to minimise strangers... More

My friend and I stayed in a 12 bed dorm room from August 23 - 26 with 8 - 10 dudes. The facilities in the room were perfect. Nice big shower. Clean toilet and sink and plenty of TP. Beds were comfortable and clean. Massive heat wave while we were there and SO pleasantly surprised to come back to an... More

Hi there, Thank you for the review. We are really sorry you got a couple of idiots staying in your room :(. Sometimes Amsterdam takes control of people. I am really happy that our night staff were there to help you and get the problem taken care of. As for me, i wasn't confused at all and I thought it... More

I cant say a bad word about The Bulldog; it provided everything we needed and wanted. The rooftop terrace is perfect and the bar downstairs is good too. You are right above The Bulldog Coffee shop and there are another couple down the road. The rooms are basic but clean and pretty nice to be honest. We stayed in a 10... More

Our first stop on the trip was Amsterdam. This hostel provided us with the perfect hostel experience. The check in was unique with no smoking in the rooms but allowed to smoke hash in the restaurant 😂. We shared a 12 bedroom dorm and found the room to be clean. Lockers available to hold passports or other secure items. Shower... More

Really good staying with all my friends. The hostel it's just in the center and it's well linked to everything. The staff it's really powerful, helpful and funny. Nothing to complaint, just I've tried to smoke at 9am in the lounge and they stopped me...maybe it was so early. Thanks all

Lol - thanks for the kind words - smoking is only permitted after breakfast is finished. Of course, the coffeeshop is only next door ;) See you soon. More

The location of this hostel is great, right in the Red Light District, especially for first time visitors. There is a wonderful atmosphere in the area and you're right by the canal. It's a bit pricey for a hostel but each room has two bathrooms to 12 beds and there is a bar and restaurant right downstairs with a cafe... More

Im happy you had a good time staying with . I think, if you investigate our competitors you will find us to be very reasonably priced. Dont forget, some hostels give an inclusive price (with breakfast, taxes, wifi towels, like us!) and some exclude everything int he price, so read the fine print. Some excellent advice for our future visitors... More

Stayed here in the summer with 10 friends for 2 nights. The bunk beds were comfortable, although there wasn't much space for bags and the lockers were pretty small. Location was a huge advantage, as this was placed right next to RDL and on the canal. Would recommend for large groups who want to be in the centre.

Thank you for the review. We are aware that the lockers were a bit small. Our new and improved lockers are being installed in the rooms and every room will have a new locker very soon. We will hope to see you again soon :) More

Me and a friend stayed in a 10 person mixed dorm for 3 nights and were pleasantly surprised. Was clean, tidy and comfortable. There are 10 bunk beds in a large room, each has there own locker and the room has one shower room and one toilet. Definitely takes some getting used to sleeping in a room with 9 strangers... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
