The hostel is nice, the reception is inside a bar that gets very crowded at night what its good if you are there but if you're trying to sleep isn't that nice.. staff is caring and helpful. The bathroom stinks a little but I think that depends on the people who's using it. Its well placed, near the central station...

In a dodgy area with creepy men standing outside the hostel at night. Our windows looked down onto the red light district windows. The staff were not accommodating to our questions and were quite dismissive. The photos on the hostel website are misleading and rooms are actually quite old. Our bathroom had an awful drainage smell. The hostel is situated...

Hey, It's a real pity you didn't feel totally safe in Amsterdam; the city gets a bad rep sometimes and has made a lot of huge positive changes in recent years. We take security extremely seriously at The Winston and our building is staffed with trained professionals around the clock, so we can assure you are quite safe with us,...

I stayed in the chick dorm which is separate to the rest of the hostel rooms. You have to exit the actual bar/hostel and walk next door. No hassle, except that I couldn't get in for breakfast and no one answered the door bell so I had to wait for people to exit. As with most Amsterdamage hostels, there's no...

We didn't stay in the hostel as it was fully booked, but visited the bar on 2 occasions and had a very enjoyable time. The staff were very friendly (especially the guy from Harrogate) and the music and atmosphere were excellent. Although we were the oldest customers by about 30 years we didn't feel out of place. When we go...

The bar in this hostel was excellent - great music and excellent atmosphere no matter what time we visited. They do really good promotions including 2 Absolute Vodka and (real) Red Bull for 9 euros all day which was really good. We also tried some food which was delicious and fresh. Definitely worth a visit and we would even look...

Flew into Amsterdam for the night and booked this hotel because it was relatively cheap and had great review on other hostel websites. Hostel did not disappoint and was right in the red light district. Was about a 8 minute walk from Central Station. Hostel has a great bar / lobby area where everyone hangs out and socializes. Stayed in...

Stayed here for four nights with a friend in an 8 bed mix dorm and it was the perfect hostel - fantastic staff, great people, affordable food/drinks, clean...the list could go on! I was really impressed that the rooms were cleaned/bedding changed daily...made for a nice welcome back after long days sightseeing! The hostel is centrally located (close to Dam...

The Hostel was very clean. The staff made our beds and cleaned the en-suite bathroom everyday. I stayed in a twin room which was very spacious. The breakfast was very good and had great variety. The bar area is awesome and great to meet people, great drink specials. Loved how the rooms were decorated. Slept with earplugs in as it...

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
