What makes it great? Every staff member offered hospitality that felt personal - from doormen, front staff, concierge (booked us into some very good restaurants), waiters, and room staff. Besides this all-important aspect of personalized service, the location is so central, on the Amstel. We could enjoy the view, and we could also walk to many museums and restaurants. Rooms were impeccably clean and beautifully appointed and so comfortable - beds were perfect - with large marble bathroom with heated floors, great water pressure and lots of hot water. The spa robes were great for those few moments of lounging around! There is a spa and pool on site, but we did not avail ourselves of their use since we were so busy with sight-seeing. BTW, a canal boat cruise runs about 100 yards from the hotel entrance. We really hope to have another stay at this memorable modernized "grand dame" of a hotel!

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
Very good hotel, I got a suite and it was was very large (~50sqm / ~550 sqft). The service was very good and many details in the room, both big and small, were quite well thought out. Diptyque toiletries were among the better ones I've seen and the bathrobes were particularly soft. US / UK plugs were in the room, in addition to European ones. I ate at both the French and Italian restaurants for dinner, and had breakfast in the French restaurant as well. All the meals were great. What you would expect from a great luxury hotel in Europe.
One highlight for me, the gym was quite good and MUCH better than the typical high end city center European hotel gym, which are always constrained by limited space and guests that probably don't care that much about a full gym. Usually you get a couple treadmills / stationary bikes and a small rack of very light weights, which is pretty much what the picture showed, so I went in thinking I'd just use the bike for a bit. When I got there, I realized there's actually a squat rack that also has some smaller bars that can be used with the weights to make dumbbells that go up to ~20kg / 45lbs. Additionally, there's some other machines that in total, enabled me to effectively replicate the workout I do at my gym at home. The only other hotel I've been to that I remember being able to say that about is the Lexington in NYC, which has an actual gym (Crunch Fitness) in the basement that guests can use. The other guest at the gym mentioned to me that they were also positively surprised that they could do their entire workout. For me, that's pretty incredible enough to elevate this hotel from "very nice hotel with a good rate that let me use the $200 FHR credit" to one that I will proactively seek out the next time I am in Amsterdam. Other hotels could learn a thing or two (or everything really) from this hotel about how to offer an actual gym with limited space and only a handful of pieces of equipment. Their pictures of the gym really don't do it justice and they should highlight it more!

Every time I come to Amsterdam I try a new hotel, however this time I think I made a mistake.
I'll start with the positives, it's a lovely old hotel in a good location in the center of town. Rooms are large by European standards and have big bathrooms with tubs.
That's where the accolades end unfortunately.
What ruins this hotel is the service. Just a terrible experience from start to finish. Upon check in, we were offered something to drink while we waited for our rooms to be ready, asked for a tea and a coffee, 30 mins later, no tea or coffee. Asked the waitress in the lobby and said she didn't know we had ordered anything, explained it came from the front desk. Another 10 minutes later, they were brought, along with a bill. Bait and switch.
Later on we had some drinks in the lobby bar area, and it was absolutely abysmal. One waiter brought a menu then disappeared, took 30 minutes to get someone else to come over and take our order, another 20 minutes to get two glasses of wine, then never saw that waiter again. After 30 minutes, wanted a refill and couldn't find anyone, had to go in the restaurant and try to ask a waiter to come help us, they didn't and said "just be patient." Not an acceptable response. Finally another waitress came to serve the table next to us, we asked her to please come over, she said no and walked off. Another 15 minutes finally back to give the bill to the table next to us, I had to physically stand up and block her from walking away to get a refill. She brought it eventually. Wanted one more round and same story. Absent service, back into the restaurant again, dismissed by staff in restaurant, and had to track down the waitress to place our order. By the time she brought it, we had to leave for our dinner reservations. Needless to say, a less than ideal experience. Wanted to pay the bill but she never came back, went back into the restaurant for a THIRD time and just asked if we could pay the bill, they said no, had to be done with the bar waitress, couldn't find her, so went to the front desk and told them to just charge it to our room.
I know the Dutch aren't exactly known for good service, but when you pay a super premium price for a five star hotel, you expect the basics to be met, which this hotel fails to deliver.
Cherry on the cake was at breakfast the next day, ordered a simple rosti with a soft poached egg on top, Rosti took 30 minutes to come, raw in the middle (potatoes uncooked in the center) and egg was hard as a rock, had clearly been sitting out under a heat lamp. Charged 30 euros for it anyway.
There are too many other five star hotels in town for the same price that offer superior service, so I would advise you to avoid this one.

It is clear that your visit did not meet your expectations, and I would like to extend my sincere apologies for the shortcomings you described. While I am pleased to hear that you appreciated our hotel's location, the spaciousness of the rooms, and the design, I deeply regret that the level of service fell short of your expectations. These are areas we will address immediately with our management and staff to ensure that such lapses do not recur. Every guest should feel attended to promptly and courteously, especially in a five-star setting. We value your loyalty to Amsterdam and your exploration of its many fine hotels. Your candid review highlights the importance of consistency in delivering excellence, and I can assure you that we take your observations seriously as part of our commitment to continuous improvement. My wife and I recently stayed here and were beyond impressed with this hotel. We’ve had several stays in Amsterdam and this was by far the nicest we’ve experienced. Our room was spotless upon arrival and cleaned daily, which made everything feel so welcoming. The service was incredible, with friendly staff and doormen who even helped me learn a bit of Dutch. They helped us arrange a canal tour and set up bicycles, making it easy to explore the area. Though we didn’t have breakfast, it looked impressive every morning. Freddy’s, a bar attached to the hotel, was the perfect starting point for our nights out. We also had a member of our group in a wheelchair, and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. Highly recommend for a wonderful stay. Dank je wel and see you again soon!

We had a suite with a balcony over the canal for three nights. The room was very clean and left nothing to be desired. Even the little things that you only notice when they are NOT working (mattress, minibar temperature, TV, shower water pressure, etc.) were all perfect - there was nothing to complain about. The service was world class, from arrival to departure. The communication was super friendly throughout and also on a very friendly level with our (growing) children, who had their own room. Remarkable! I don't think there is anything to say about the location. It is 1A+ and right in the middle of everything. We handed our car over to the hotel's valet service immediately after arriving and only had it returned to us when we left - with the hotel's location, everything that makes Amsterdam special can be experienced and done in just a few minutes on foot. We would choose the De L'Europe Amsterdam again and again.

Our room was right over the canal. It had a balcony as well as the biggest bed I've ever seen, a huge bathroom, roomy shower and separate tub. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We took the private small boat tour for lunch, you choose delicious food from local restaurants. Motored off from the hotels berth, for a very comprehensive tour. For some reason the Captain kept track of our drinks poured, after paying for all inclusive tour...? The location afforded us walking distance (My MS keeps me from much over a mile or two) it seemed like we were right in the middle of almost everything. The Golden Bend, the Flower Market, and The Old Church coffee shop is right across the canal, all distances my MS could handle! I loved Amsterdam and would gladly return to De L'Europe.

Almost everybody in Amsterdam talks very highly of this hotel and tell me stories about the famous people who stayed there. Unfortunately, this has been my third time and I am very disappointed again.
During check in, I was told that the AC system is not working but they placed portable heaters in rooms. However, the weather was relatively warm and I needed AC rather than a heater. In the absence of AC system, there was no air circulation and there was a heavy smell in my room.
I had a business lunch at Marie Brasserie, one of the fine restaurants in the hotel. I needed to wash my hands. The waiter showed me the direction of the toilets right behind the Concierge, but there was no power, the place was in complete darkness.
Last not the least, I checked out after clearing all the outstanding balance. However, after returning from my journey, I checked my credit card and have seen that they collected additional amount from my credit card after I checked out without my information. Later on, I checked with the billing department, I was told it was mini bar charges. I have not used the mini bar at all. I even did not use the free complimentary bottle of water which they provided. I bought my own water from next door Spar market. I strongly recommend you made sure mini bar is checked at the time of the check out, otherwise, you may be very disappointed.

Dear TrustLondon, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely apologize that your recent visit did not meet your expectations. Firstly, we regret the inconvenience caused by the air conditioning issue. Providing a comfortable environment is important to us, and we acknowledge that the temporary solution of portable heaters was not suitable given the warmer weather during your stay. We are actively addressing this issue to prevent it from happening again in the future. Regarding the power outage, please note that this issue affected the entire block and was not limited to the hotel. Thank you for your understanding, and we appreciate your patience during this time. As for the mini-bar charges, we understand the frustration this caused. We will review the matter with the billing department to prevent future discrepancies and to ensure our processes are as transparent as possible. We understand that this impacted on your experience. Please know that your feedback is invaluable to us, and we will work hard to improve for future guests. We hope you will consider giving us another opportunity to provide you with the exceptional stay you deserve. De L'Europe Amsterdam is a magnificent five-star gem that exceeded all expectations! This privately-owned luxury hotel proved to be the perfect finale to my river cruise experience. The service is impeccable, with staff anticipating every need before you even realize it. Culinary excellence abounds with their two-Michelin-starred restaurant, authentic Italian venue (complete with Italian staff!), French restaurant, and charming bar. The spa facilities are outstanding, offering complimentary access to an indoor heated pool, infrared sauna, dry sauna, and steam room – pure bliss! Room service delivered restaurant-quality dishes, and the à la carte breakfast was simply divine. From start to finish, De L'Europe Amsterdam delivers an unforgettable luxury experience that makes you feel like royalty. It's not just a hotel; it's a destination in itself.
