This was a Very good location, near dam square. Good shopping in the area. Hotel was ok and worth the money. The staff were friendly and helpful when we got there. They tried hard to get us in to our room on time. Which did happen. Nice food shops near by and tourist shop for guidance. The wireless worked so... More

Just back from HOTEL DE GERSTEKORREL stayed with my 2 teenage sons from Saturday 17 March to Monday 19th, we stayed in room no 32 on the 3rd floor, the tales of the stairs are spot on but as a 55 year old slightly over weight male, i can honestly say that they only started to bother me late evening... After a stay for a couple of nights in a nearby hotel that was more expensive than here, we wanted to stay in Amsterdam for an extra night, so we moved on and found the De Gerstekorrel. The hotel is right in the heart of Dam, on a main street but our room which was on the first floor and... More

We were very tired from our journey to Amsterdam and we wanted to drop our bags off at the hotel and maybe get something to eat, so we arrived at the hotel reception and were greeted by a lovely receptionist who was more than happy to put us in our room straight away. The hotel is right where you need... More

We stayed in the smoking rooms which are in a seperate building from the main hotel. The room was very clean and didnt smell like a smoking room. This... More

Hotel De Kerstekorrel is our favourite place to stay whenever we go to Dam - since discovering 'Amsterdam's Best Kept Secret' in 2007, we have stayed there 15 times. It's about time we spread the love and write a review. We were first attracted to the Gerstekorrel because of its convenient location : After a 40 minute flight from Luton... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
