Spent 3 nights here in 2004, was then a great wee place with a steakhouse restaurant below it. I believe that has changed now. Would still go back as it is a very central location just 5 minutes walk from the railway station.

Although it was in the centre of the city and accessible to restaurants, Grand Central station, tourists offices, palace, etc. but the condition of the hotel and the pricing which is way beyond expensive so now I will not go there again nor I will recommend anyone to stay there. The room was like a little bigger than a grave.

I found my stay pleasurable here. It's cheap and it's not far from the Red Light District so if you want to avoid noise and if you want class for the same price, go further out of the Center. You get what you pay for! The beds were comfy, TV worked and bathroom was perfect. Very pleasurable stay!

The reality about this hotel is that it was reaallly expensive for the comodities they offer...while i was waiting to be notice that there was no room left in the hotel, a waittress came in and told the reception guy that she called the police yesterday night because there was a man pushing a woman down the stairs so that... I stayed in hotel Damrak with my boyfriend and we had a wonderful time. Our room was cosy, with big beautiful windows that opened out onto the street. The location was ideal, a 5 minute walk from bars, restaurants, the Red light district and public transport. Overall a great stay.

Was dreading our stay here after seeing the reviews - but it seems to have been vastly improved from old ratings. The general areas of hotel need a good clean but the rooms are decent in themselves and the bedding is okay too. Each room has a safe which is a bonus. Not bad really - not the Ritz but... More

We checked in and walked straight back out again, couldn't even face staying there. The room was dirty, there was a smell of urine and there were stains on the bed sheets and walls. There was rat traps under our beds. Please stay away!

Good Points: Location Bad Points: Incredibly noisy Dark & Dingy No Breakfast Narrow endless stairs, no lift Unwelcoming Over priced Cramped Did I mention it was noisy? All the rooms and stairs have wooden floors. People were coming and going all night and each time it was like a herd of wildebeest in tap shoes stampeding through the room. Unbelievable!

I booked a last minute trip to amsterdam with my wife and wanted a cheap clean hotel in a good location. To be fair its ain a great location, but thats where it ends. It is a pit that needs to be totally refurbished. We had the room behind reception that actually had the stair case in so as with... More

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
