Just returned from our 3 night stay at the Mercure hotel and what a stay! The hotel is located in overamstel which is 10-15 mins on the 51 metro + 5-10 walk from stop to hotel (save yourself some money and get a travel card from the tourist centre/machines for €19 so worth it. Never had to wait more than 10 mins for the metro). We opted for this hotel as we didnt want to be in the centre of all of it and Amsterdams public transport is amazing so we took advantage. The staff checking us in were lovely (unfortunately didnt get their names, we saw the woman the day after and she asked if we liked our room etc) I had mentioned on booking that this was a gift trip for my other half turning 30th and we were celebrating our 10 year anniversary. The staff pulled out all the stops decorating the room for us and an upgrade to privilege room with a view of the canal! The bed was large, lovely and comfortable, the best I have ever slept being away from home. The rain shower was amazing, great after an seemingly endless trip in the rain on arrival day. We never got our room cleaned while staying and opted for the €5 discount to spend in the bar/restaurant (brilliant idea!) We did have the water and drinks in the fridge replenished daily however. Only negative was that there was no light in the fridge. We enjoyed ourselves that much that we were looking to return later this year while on the train to the airport!!! Truly outstanding hotel and service!!! Thank you for an amazing trip:) 5*

Dear Robyn, Thank you very much for sharing your best city break ever! We are extremely happy that you had such a pleasant stay at our hotel. Your comments will be shared with our staff as we are delighted to be informed that you had such a warm welcome and that you appreciated the decorations that were done! Great that you enjoyed the the privilege room and that you had such a comfortable night sleep. Furthermore, we are also happy that you made use of the do not clean my room voucher. We feel flattered that you were already looking up on the way to the airport when to visit us again. Thank you very much for your amazing and lovely comments. The entire team looks forward to welcoming you very soon again. Kind regards, Ben Breekveldt Management Assistant

Had a 3 night stay here for two people. Overall the hotel is very good - it is clean, we found the bed comfortable (and huge!), and the shower was powerful. We did not have breakfast or any food in the restaurant, so cannot comment on this.

At check in, the staff member was friendly, informative and efficient. A slight negative however was that another member of staff (possibly management) was present walking around the reception area, watching the front desk queue become longer and longer for quite some time before putting another staff member on the front desk, which did slow down check in considerably.

No issue with the room, it was spacious, tidy and had everything we needed. There were two incidences where 3 different male staff members (apologies I did not get names) went above and beyond: one personally delivered a UK adapter to our room no issue and two saw to it that the football would be put on the large television for my partner downstairs. Upon checkout the female member of staff was also very friendly, I reported an extremely minor issue just to make her aware and she took it professionally and gracefully - it is clear here that the staff are client focussed.

The only other slight negative was that on the Saturday we left the room at 9 and came back at 3 to relax before dinner. However upon returning, the room had not been cleaned and the maids knocked on our room at 3.30, we declined a clean as we were resting. I understand that maid service runs later on Saturday, however I do believe that 3.30 is too late as many people return to the hotel by then. We did not see any cleaning trolley/equipment, so maybe we were the only room affected by this, and we did not put a sign on our door to clean the room so maybe we are at fault here (although in my experience maids will attempt to clean the room whether you have this sign or not). It was not a big issue however, and I know that the reception staff would have supplied us with more towels if needed.

The metro station is less than an 8 minute walk and gets you to Amsterdam Centraal within 20 minutes, we used trains and metro only but the routes were easy to understand and follow. Overall we would definitely stay here again!

Dear Megan, Thank you very much for sharing your experience at the Mercure Hotel Amsterdam City elaborately. We are delighted to be informed that you say would definitely stay with us again! It is pleasure to read that many of our staff members went above and beyond to create a memorable experience. The entire team would be happy to read your comments, as these truly motivate us to keep on providing courteous and professional service at all times. Nevertheless, we would like to apologise for the fact that check-in took a little bit too long and that the timing of the cleaning of the room was not to your satisfaction. For your next trip to Amsterdam the entire team looks forward to welcoming you to the hotel again. Kind regards, Ben Breekveldt Management Assistant

I travelled with friends to this hotel on a British Airways city break as it was fairly close to the Ziggo Dome, where we were going to an Andre Rieu concert. I had a lovely quiet room on the 5th floor that had every amenity I needed, even if I couldn't work out how to use the Nespresso machine - but a phone call to reception brought coffee sachets instead, plus an offer (declined) to show me how it worked. Staff were unfailingly polite and helpful, and the only disappointment was that breakfast, at 23 euros per person, was rather too expensive since we didn't want enough from the buffet to justify the cost, so we ended up eating for half the price in a city centre cafe. The Metro station is a good ten-minute walk away from the hotel, but there is a complimentary taxi to get you there.

We are happy to find out that you had a lovely stay and were assisted by our staff in a courteous manner whenever this was necessary. Went last weekend for a couples trip not only is the hotel over 5 miles from town which it did not state it is a 12 minute walk to the metro which is 16 euros a day for a couple or a taxi will cost you 25 euros each way - very expensive.
Checking in the staff was very friendly and helpful.
Room was very small - heating was inadequate not good if cold. Cups where tiny and no milk for tea. The room was not cleaned and when I asked for a bottle of water I was advised to pay 5 euros. OMG
The hotel bar, food and shop was far to expensive and there was no breakfast in the stay and this was 25 euros each which is far to expensive.
The stay was not great did not get any sleep for the 2 nights as so loud with drunk people in the halls, showering at 2am and this was causing out bathroom to be loud with water noise then above a couple having a domestic shouting, screaming smashing up the room at 5am Great and we had just got engaged that evening and this was meant to have been a lovely weekend and it was ruined .
The hotel states it has a free shuttle to the metro it does not they say good bye as you walk off and when we left to go to the airport it was pouring down and the man said shall I call you a taxi for 10 euros lol no mention of shuttle even tho it is on the board. We will not be returning

Dear Tracey-Anne, Thank you very much for sharing your experience about your stay at our hotel. We are sorry to find out that your stay did not fully meet your expectations. Please allow us to express our sincere apologies for the fact that the room was not cleaned adequately, this is not in line with our hygiene standards. Also for the fact that the temperature of the room was not to your satisfaction should have been resolved. Furthermore, we feel like some of the inconveniences experienced could have been easily avoided. Please be informed that there is filtered tap water available in the lobby for all guests free of charge, you never have to buy potable water. As for some people the extensive breakfast buffet is too large and not everyone is willing to pay €23,50, we serve a la carte breakfast. Here individual items can be ordered. In addition, the shuttle to the metro station free of charge leaves every morning, during weekdays between 8:30am and 9:30am and in the weekend between 9:00am and 11:00am. We are sorry if this was unclear to you. Finally, it is highly unpleasant to be woken up at night by people who come back drunk and also by domestic shouting during the middle of the night. Please be informed that in such cases the Front Office is 24/7 available to help you out. Unfortunately we can’t avoid these situations, however we are able to make sure such situations are stopped in a courteous and timely fashion. It is to our great remorse to see that all of the abovementioned ruined your engagement weekend. All in all we are sorry to notice that you would not want to come back to our hotel. Nevertheless we want to congratulate you with your engagement and wish you all the best. Kind regards, Ben Breekveldt Management Assistant

The rooms are small but they have most things you could need, easy access to the city by metro although very expensive the bar man wouldn’t allow us to have a jug of tap water to take up to our room and we were told only bottled which was 5euros, other hotels might provide travel adapters but if you need one here it will cost you 10 euros from the vending machine. Everything is expensive which may be why I kept seeing people going to the petrol garage down the road and coming back with food/drink. Rooms were clean and well appointed.

Dear guest, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are sorry to find out that your experience did not fully meet your expectations. Please be informed that the bar man misinformed you about the jug of tap water. Tap water that runs from the bar is the same as the tap water in your room, as tap water is safe to drink throughout the Netherlands. There is also a filtered tap water station located in our lobby. Furthermore, travel adapters can be borrowed at reception for a €10 deposit. Once you don't need it anymore, you can bring back the adapter and receive your deposit. I am sorry that this was unclear and that it was of inconvenience to you. Our Rooms Division and Food and Beverage Manager were informed about this situation. My husband and I checked in NYE & we were given a privilege room on floor 10 (1015) on checking in there was an awful smell. We had a Karcher cleaner/dryer plugged in & on so assumed this was causing the horrid smell. We had 40 mins to get ready before all public transport stopped that evening, so my husband jumped in the shower before me. The shower flooded! I couldn’t shower. We used every towel to mop up & left for the evening (clearly has happened several times, hence the smell)
We reported this to reception & said ‘it needed to be repaired by the morning & that we needed new towels too.’
At 3am we returned to room 1015, the wet towels were where we left them, the room not touched, the smell was worse than ever (wet dog smell) the air con didn’t work & the room was so ridiculously hot.
At 4am we got moved to this lovely room 1732, however, we had no heating in there! We did go from temperatures Jamaica to Iceland between these rooms!! This needs addressing.
That being said, the new room was so clean, beautiful, had a very comfortable bed & we were grateful to be given this room.
Not the best stay out of the 8 of our stays in Amsterdam. I personally wouldn’t return here.

Really didn't know what to rate this hotel. Where some bits were fine, others left a poor impression...
Pros: bed really comfy, àmazing shower, some of the staff are really helpful and friendly.  Nicely decorated. If you put a note out not to clean your room, you get a 5 euro credit for the bar/restaurant.
Day one bar server was very polite and friendly.
Day 2 receptionist in the morning was very helpful too.

Cons: location ( my fault for not properly checking but we were a 7 min walk to metro and then 15 mins to centraal.
Fridge doesn't work, it was switched on but not cold.  I didn't mention this to reception as frankly I couldn't be bothered.
the package we purchased advertised as complimentary mini bar but we weren't told on checking in that we had to ask for soft drinks at reception and that they weren't in our room. When we checked in we were also told we had interconnected rooms for us and the kids, but they weren't interconnected and when I called down to ask I was told they weren't available.
The view isn't a stunning view of the river like I had the impression but rather some big tower blocks and a less aesthetic view of the river.
When asking about travel into the city,  we were told how to get to the metro but we weren't told we could buy tickets from the hotel, or that kids under 12 were free.
We also were under the impression that there was a daily shuttle boat to the city, buy when I asked we were told it doesn't run any more.
On day 2 in the bar, I tried to order a mocktail but was told I couldn't have anything from the cocktail menu because there was a large group in the hotel and if everyone wanted a cocktail it would be too much!! There were about 20 other people in the bar and they weren't queueing up for cocktails. Just me!!
Breakfast... I really thought being in Amsterdam there might be a pancake at breakfast but there was nothing other than the standard buffet, or else if there was we weren't offered it!
For a hotel of this quality, I would have liked a few more toiletries options, we just had one shampoo, one shower gel and a moisturiser. I would have loved a shower cap and maybe a nail file or even a sewing kit!! Little extras that make you believe that it's worth the £ you're spending.

Overall its a very comfortable hotel and the staff are friendly, but some don't really know what they're talking about and others should really be offering more info at reception. We didn't feel excited to be sat in the hotel bar or felt we were given a true Dutch welcome.
I'd stay here on business maybe but I wouldn't bring my family here for leisure again. Sorry!

In our four day stay not even once our room was cleaned. The bed was made but that was it. No cleaning of the floor or toilet. No replacement of bathroom amenities. No fresh towels unless we asked. No replacement of the espresso capsules. I have never been to a mercure hotel before, where i had to ask for soap and fresh towels! Also the heating was very inadequate and when I complained i was told i will get a heater. Instead i got a single (not even double) duvet because all the heaters were taken by other rooms. My husband is a platinum member and we stay at accor hotels all the time. This was by far the worst experience.

Dear guest, Thank you for sharing your feedback online, it is very important to be informed about such matters as we take our service quality offerings very seriously. Please allow us to express our sincerest apologies for the fact that the level of housekeeping was below par and that the heating in the room did not work properly. You should never have to ask for soap, fresh towels and the replacement of Nespresso cups. Furthermore, the temperature in the room should be conveniently managed and duvets of the correct size should be given. We highly value ALL members and I would like to discuss your situation with our General Manager and get back to you with a solution. As I cannot trace your booking information through this review and I am not allowed to share email addresses in review replies, could you please send our hotel an email requesting to talk to me then I will able to help you further. I hope to have informed you sufficiently and I would like to thank you for sharing your constructive feedback. Kind regards, Ben Breekveldt Management Assistant

My partner and I stayed here for a short visit. Great place to stay, we would recommend. Close to the metro station and easy to get into town. The hotel also offer an open daily pass for the metro and bus which we used and found very cost effective. Breakfast at the cafe was amazing and decent sized! We didn't get the buffet breakfast that was included but do not regret it as the cafe brekky was amazing. Bar was every quaint and enjoyed it.

Hotel is located on the city fringe but only 10 minutes walk from Overamstel metro means you're only a 20 mins train ride into the city centre.

Front desk was attentive and provided a smooth check-in.

Room was clean, new and nicely furnished. My room had a view of the car park and a partial view of the water canel.

Main negative aspect that caused this review to be 4/5 instead of 5/5 is because of the "fully stocked complimentary minibar". I arrived after a long drive so was just looking to rest and hydrate after checking in. We only wanted some drinking water but the fridge only contained one can of Pepsi for two adults. When we called the reception, we were told that there is a water dispenser at the lobby. So I made my way to ask the front desk for drinking water and they kindly provided me 2 cans of still water per night after asking how many days was my stay. Otherwise, there is indeed a water dispenser at the lobby. This just made me wonder why does the hotel need to ration / restrict their "fully stocked complimentary minibar"?

Mercure Amsterdam City is everything you'll expect from a Mercure hotel but the inconvenience from the minibar really caused a negative start to an otherwise comfortable stay.
