Booked a double room we got too single beds and it was too later to have anything changed as house keeping had gone. We sat in our room with hats scarf and puffer jackets because the aircon blew out cold air. We asked for it to be fixed and we received an extra heater but on our return no one had plugged it in.

Hotel is central location and approx 10 minute walk from Central Station where you can get Train to from airport, the city is easy accessible from this hotel. We had a comfort standard room which was located on 4th floor, this room is small however it had everything we required for the stay. Previous reviews commented on the towels, they probably do need replacing but they were clean and the hole we seen was in the mat for bathroom floor. We also had the vents outside window but didn’t find this too noisy the hotel itself was busy but not a noisy hotel. The only thing I would comment on was their was a power cut early morning, there appeared to be no back up generators and it was in total darkness, following this power cut our heating/air con unit the panel kept flashing. Unsure if it was planned or not but no member of staff checked everyone was okay to our knowledge. Staff were polite enough although had very little interactions. Overall if you want somewhere central can deal with a wear and tear this place is good.

I can honestly say that this hotel ruined my trip In Amsterdam. Firstly, when we arrived the room was TINY and was in the basement. It was so dark to the point we had to have the lights on the whole trip. I was so disappointed as we had paid 233 euro a night not even breakfast included. The shower is a flimsy curtain and the drain barely works as the bathroom floods the minute you turn on the water with how small it is. I really do not like to complain about hotel as I don’t think it’s nice but I had very politely expressed how disappointed I was to reception but the receptionist said it was out of her control. The receptionist was extremely pleasant in fairness. I wanted to speak to a manager to see if there was anything that could be done but I was told come back tomorrow and then the next day when I was there they said she was busy and to come back again. I would have got over the room if the towels were not filthy. The towels has holes in them and stains. I will insert pictures. The worst part is that when I went to reception to get a clean towel I had to go down 4!! times because each time they gave me a towel it had mysterious black and brown stains. The manager was extremely dismissive of everything I had to say as she said it was my fault for booking a comfort room even thought the pictures don’t match the rooms. She also said regarding the towels that it was the washing machine. A washing machine is meant to clean clothes not put stains and holes in them. I felt that the hotel didn’t take me seriously on anything which makes me feel more frustrated. I’ve never in my whole life seen the likes of this in a hotel before. Please for anyone reading this review, save your money for sightseeing tours as Amsterdam is a very beautiful city.

We stayed at this hotel for a couple of days while visiting Amsterdam. The hotel is very conveniently located in the center of Amsterdam. It’s very noise since there are many bars and restaurants all around the hotel. The rooms and beds are small and outdated. The breakfast is only served starting at 8:00 AM on the weekends which is quite inconvenient especially if you have an early flight. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Just came back from a city break in Amsterdam. I travelled with my mother and boyfriend. We chose Amsterdam de Roode Leeuw, due to its great location and decent reviews. The location is definitely good, although the hotel itself is not as the photos they advertise online. Very poor old rooms, flimsy and smelly towels. We have paid £200/night. We had 2 reservations, so the first night my mom (single ocupancy) stayed in a double room, which was decent. The second night we all had to change rooms and they offered my mom for the SAME PRICE, the tiniest room I have ever seem in a hotel. And it was smelling awful. When we talked to the receptionist, explaining that this is just not right that my mother had to downgrade her room to place her in a “cage” and to pay the same price, they just didn’t care and said there’s nothing they can do. The 3rd night we just decided we cannot stay there anymore and we moved hotels. Overall, very unpleasant stay at the Amsterdam de Roode Leeuw and felt like total rip off. Be aware of this!

We stayed at the hotel For 3 nights in July & had upgraded to a superior room with city view. The room was lovely, really clean & although a little on the small side for an upgrade, was perfect for a short stay. Not a huge amount of storage, but enough for a large case (we were attending a wedding so had quite a few clothes with us!) There was a seating area with a great view & 2 French windows that opened fully, with a little step to be able to look out. The location was perfect - about a 10 minute walk from the station & close to all the sites. The staff were lovely - Timwadee & Blin on reception where so helpful & a credit to the hotel, (they all were but we didn’t get everyone’s names!). There was a fire alarm on the second afternoon we were there & the staff were very professional & made sure everyone was ok (it was a false alarm thank goodness) We would definitely return, but would try & upgrade again to the larger room.

A very nice hotel near the central train station located on a busy street. The hotel is neat, with exceptional service at the restaurant. I was checked in by Belen, she was very helpful. The room is relatively quiet in-spite of its location on a busy street. Everything including the room is expensive. That maybe due to the prime tourist location. One step out of the hotel, and you’re in the middle of the action. The hotel forgot to wake me up in the morning up to checkout and head to the airport. In addition the taxi ride I reserved through the hotel never showed up. The receptionist didn’t even try to get me another taxi. Thank God for UBER.

We booked two superior rooms, a twin for our teenage sons and a double for ourselves. Both rooms were a good size and were clean. Beds were fairly soft but remarkably comfortable. Each room had a safe, a small fridge and two armchairs. There was also a kettle and a coffee machine with pods provided. There were no USB sockets in either room so we had to share the single plug adapter we’d brought with us to charge our various devices. The rooms didn’t get much natural light so were a little gloomy. Our room was quiet but our sons’ room was at the side of the hotel overlooking an alley which was very noisy with bins being wheeled along it and deliveries. It was also a cut through to the next street so busy with passers-by. Their room also shared a wall with the stairwell so there was constant noise from people going up and down the main hotel stairway. If you get a quiet room this is an ideal central location from which to explore Amsterdam but be aware it could be noisy depending on the location of the room. I would give our room four stars but our sons’ room only two stars hence the three star average.

After completing the check in process receptionist then told us that our booked room was not available and we had been downgraded due to admin error. Not entirely sure if this was the reason as the rooms facing, next to us and along the corridor were being renovated - no mention of works in hotel at all. Offered free breakfast or €50 per night compensation. No choice but to accept in a very busy Amsterdam and with lots of luggage with us having come here following other journeys. As they knew about the issue they could have have told us in advance allowing us the opportunity to look elsewhere. The reception area is small and looks nice, opens into the restaurant associated with hotel and open to the public. On the landings outside lift it’s clear that it is an old, original Amsterdam building as the original staircase is still in place. Nice new dark grey carpets and newly painted walls in white and grey. The woodwork must have 20 layers of paint which hasn’t been sanded back so is quite uneven in places. Room walls showing some marks at about 2 feet high possibly replastered pre wallpapering, air con old fashioned, poor, inefficient took almost 2 hours to get the room to what the control said was 19 degrees. Made a constant noise when in operation so not great for getting to sleep. In the current very hot weather, really not that good but did finally cool the room down. Curtains are good at keeping light out as they are a dark colour, nice coffee machine and a kettle for tea but only enough sugar and creamer for one drink each. Soft bed with some newer linens and some old and slightly shabby. Pillows small, square and lumpy and there were only two had to ask for more. Three electrical sockets and two USB points. New looking laminate or vinyl type flooring not carpet. Small wall hung TV. Tiny wardrobe space no drawers, tables not cabinets at bedsides. No dressing table for cosmetics etc. in room tea and coffee provided but only enough creamer and sugar for one cup each. Plain bare white walls, no art work, making it very cell like. Bathroom: newly retailed on walls and floor, small rectangular shape with small sink (which hasn’t been renewed) and shows signs of crazing in glaze and very dirty black mould encrusted overspill hole, cubicle has well used shower curtain not a door, very wrinkled and has pink mould at bottom so not changed frequently enough. As curtains do the curtain sticks to you as you are washing. Only liquid soap in shower no conditioner, shower cap etc. Over sink mirror glassing coming off at corners which looks scruffy. Towels we had are well used with rust stains and other marks, thin and greying. Drain smell from sink intermittently. If you’re tall the leg room when using the toilet is pretty restricted. Banging doors as people come and go to rooms. Noise from trams easily bests the double glazing. A good nights sleep is definitely not a promise here. There has been and still is some refurbishment underway. On floor 2 where we were there at least three rooms being refurbished as I’ve seen into each of them. Work started at about 9am and while not exactly loud it was annoying. It’s clear that not all aspects of this hotel have been refurbished. It’s more of a refresh than a full refurbish in my opinion. Overall this is a no frills hotel. Cleanliness was just about Ok and beyond that and the central position on Damrak there is nothing to recommend it at approx £225 per night midweek. Look elsewhere there are lots of boutique hotels a few minutes away that are much better. The photos on line make it look much better than it is. It’s almost laughable that on our way into reception on checking in an exiting guest overheard us looking for the hotel and said in a grumpy voice “yes, this the Red Lion Hotel(De Roode Leeuw). Good luck.” I’ve told Booking.com that there is ongoing work in the hotel, which wasn’t mentioned in the ad but haven’t had a response yet. When looking for how to contact them I discovered that the hotel is a Booking.com ‘Recommended’ hotel. On looking further this is something the hotel pays Booking.com to do. Needless to say we won’t be staying at this hotel again and will more carefully look at Booking.coms recommended hotels. You live and learn.

Pros: The location! Unbeatable location that is close to supermarkets, canal tours, Centraal Station, food, and nightlife. The restaurant downstairs served excellent food! Cons: The room looked nothing like what is advertised. The bathroom was very small and had mold. We also had to keep the bathroom door closed as it smelled like sewage the entire time we were there. The guests upstairs were noisy and it sounded like a group of elephants stomping around at all hours of the night. Overall, the location was great and front desk staff were friendly, but I would not stay here again. I was actually quite embarrassed of the room that I selected as my travel partner appeared let down by the room.
