Hotel Die Port van Cleve is a famous Dutch hotel located directly behind the Royal Palace & facing Dam Square. Due to its central location, you will find many touristic and cultural sites within walking distance. Hotel Die Port van Cleve has a rich history. Heineken opened its first brewery in this building in 1864. Hulscher's restaurant is famous for its numbered steaks and Bar-Bodega ‘De Blauwe Parade’ has an unique Delft blue tile fresco dating from 1887. The rooms are decorated with references to the authentic tile fresco in the bar. In 2020 due to its 150 anniversary around 20 rooms were renovated and are now themed with one of our six memorable moments. The ground floor is entirely renovated.

Die Port Van Cleve has garnered attention for its cleanliness and the friendly service provided by its attentive staff. While the hotel's prime location is frequently praised, offering easy access to attractions and public transport, opinions on the value proposition are divided; guests appreciate the reasonable restaurant prices but find room rates steep and TV options lacking.
The comfortable beds and amenities are a highlight, yet some suggest the rooms could benefit from better lighting, space, and updated air conditioning.

Detailed Reviews
Hotel building externally is beautiful and has the wow factor.
ROOM:
room size was good, we don’t spend much time in the rooms other than to shower and sleep. The room was spotless so hats off to the cleaning team. Room could do with a light near the full length mirror (room 522) we only had two wall lights in the whole room, so everything was a bit dull and dark. Shower was perfect for me, always had hot water when needed. Bring your own hairdryer though as the hotels one doesn’t even dry water marks on your top let alone a head of hair.
HOTEL;
Staff were friendly and pleasant. Communal areas were clean. Nice little touch of the water bottles on arrival and when requested. We didn’t eat in the restaurant as the menu didn’t appeal to us. Location of the hotel is the highlight of this hotel, walking distance to majority of attractions. We didn’t use the tram once. Loads of bars and restaurants near by. The train station is literally a 10 min walk.
RECOMMENDATIONS;
-The pool bar... can not recommend this place enough! Booze, pool, board games and music ... & doesn’t cost and arm and leg for drinks.
- the red light museum, the confessions at the end had me cracking up, there’s some weird people in this world!
I personally don’t feel this hotel is 4star standard, but happy to have experienced it. I’d stay at the hotel again if the price was right.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Firstly check in isn’t until 3pm. So if your on a early flight consider this! I like to get showered and fresh after a flight! We was in room 118 but actually we then needed to go down two additional sets of stairs almost like a cellar to get to the room. No lift available to this section.
The room was a good size, but dated and in need of modernising. Our room was sadly very very loud. As we had several people above us it was constantly noisy so I wouldn’t recommend this room at all! The room also had storage and coat hangers but no actual rail to hang your clothes!??? Bit annoying when everything is freshly ironed.
The room was cleaned daily and reception were helpful and professional.
The location of the hotel is great really central to everything and only about a 10/15 minute walk from the train station. So easy access from the airport.
In just 3 days we spent over €500 which was restricting our selves! Amsterdam is quite expensive like any city I guess. It was a good stay but wouldn’t be returning any time soon.

We had a superior room which was small but suitable for us as we were only there a few days. The room was really clean and has everything for your basic needs. A bit more storage would be good (drawers etc). Bathroom was fine; shower was okay. The hairdryer is not good at all and it took me three times longer than normal to dry my hair.
Staff are very nice and helpful. Check in process is a bit long but they do give you some good info about the area etc.
We decided to get the buffet one morning (most places were closed on NYD) and it was not good. It's continental only with no hot food. All that was on offer was two cheeses, some bread, a bit of ham, and 3 generic cereals. The coffee wasn't that good. It's priced better than most places in Amsterdam but it was only worth about half the price of what we paid. Very few options for those with dietary requirements. To have ordered anything else, we'd need to have paid extra and it wasn't worth it.
We ordered room service one day and the food was good but the 5Euro charge is a bit excessive.
We did have a couple issues in the room - TV didn't work at one point, a motion sensor light stayed on despite nobody being near it, and the safe needed replacing.
The hotel is in a really good location. We wouldn't object to staying here again but would also look to see what else is in Amsterdam.

Stayed at this dumpy over priced relic of a hotel for a few days back in December 2019. When we arrived we were sent to a weird looking and dark room which was totally unacceptable given the price. Called down and they changed us to a better room but one gets the feeling the hotel management are trying to take advantage of their guests and hoping the guest won't complain.
We also had strange and rather offensive treatment in their restaurant during breakfast. They were constantly harassing my partner and I for payment which was strange because the continental breakfast was included.
There are far better hotels in Amsterdam than this overrated, over priced distaster.

Me and my partner stayed here for 3 nights in feb 2020 for a weekend away. The hotel is in the perfect spot as Amsterdam square is on the opposite side of the street. Most things are within a 10-15 walking distance like wise the tram lines are on the door step to travel further round the city. All the staff were friendly and helpful. I rang down to reception to see if there was a laundrette service as my clothes where creased from the travel. I had an iron and ironing board brought up to the room within 5 minutes! Free of charge, which I thought was very good. We never ate in the restaurant due to there not being much choice on the menu however there are plenty restaurants and places to eat close by. Rooms are spacious and clean. I would stay here again.

I have just come back from my stay in this hotel this weekend, and I will say I was so pleased with it!
The location of the hotel was absolutely ideal, right across the road from Dam Square, next to a shopping mall and also a big super market. It was a maximum 15 minute walk from most of the museums etc, and perfect to walk back after a night out.
The staff were all friendly and the hotel itself was beautiful and very clean. The only misleading part is that the rooms don't match the decor of the lobby, as they are more old fashioned. The rooms were small, however me and my boyfriend thought it was just the perfect room for our 4 day stay, tea and coffee in the rooms, a great shower and a comfy bed.
We had no problems at all with the hotel, I would highly recommend it to my friends (which I already have!).
Will 100% be looking to rebook next time we visit Amsterdam

The hotel itself was ok, though did seem quite overpriced compared to other hotels I've stayed in, and the Air Conditioning was poor to say the least.
However that was not our main issues. We booked this hotel as a refundable booking, so we could mitigate any issues caused by Corona. We booked 4 nights, however during our first night unfortunately the UK government decision to quarantine arrivals from Netherlands meant that we had to cut our trip short. After speaking with staff they seemed quite accomodating, and said that if we requested a refund through hotels.com, that they would approve it. However, this was clearly just a ploy to appease us and get us out of the hotel. After speaking with hotels.com staff, they contacted the hotel to request our refund for the remaining 3 nights which we hadn't stayed. However, this request was flatly refused, the reason given being because we had paid up front. As a result we've been left out of pocket for 3 nights we did not stay at the hotel. I don't find this acceptable, especially after being lied to by the staff about this. I suspect they probably will have also rebooked our room out again if they could.

We have been to Amsterdam previously, but this was our first stay at this hotel and I can not recommend it highly enough. The location was perfect. You walk out the front door, cross the road and you are in Dam square.
We arrived well before the 3 PM check in time, but our room was ready for us. We simply paid the city tax that was outstanding, having paid for the room at the time of booking. I was not asked to put a credit card on file for incidentals. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable. The front of house staff were polite and very friendly and the room attendants had the room cleaned for you by late morning, but never came early enough to wake you up.
I would definitely stay here again and I would most certainly recommend them to any one who asked.

Great location, despite the construction - taxis can only get you within a block or two, otherwise accessible by walking. Comfortable bed! Quirky and dated rooms - weird steps from door down to bedroom - just weird, but lighted. The breakfast was not incuded and at 20EU it seemed excessive. I don't understand why we could not just order a la carte to get a coffee and a pastry, The restaurant looked charming but honestly it was always pretty empty so that seems like a missed opportunity there.

Second time visiting this hotel, loved the fantastic location.
At the front desk, Mr. Tom gave me great help during checking in and made sure that I felt at home immediately.
Ms. Nina at the front desk was very kind enough to demonstrate to me for how to operate my coffee machine back in my room.
Another gem at Die Port van Cleve was Ms. Sibu, my room cleaner for today, I urgently needed to reply some business emails when Sibu arrived at my room for the cleaning up. I apologized to her and suggested to her that if she can return half hour later, as I need some privacy in the room when I work. She kindly obliged and say bye bye, truly she returned half hours on time but I still need 5 more minutes to shut down my 5 year old laptop. Finally, when I left the room, Nina was waiting at the side of my room, while feeling embarrassing for keeping a petite looking young lady and I apologized to Nina, mentioning sorry for keeping her waiting.
She just smiled and said no problem sir!
Excellent place to stay when ever in Amsterdam 👌
