Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

Stayed here for four nights in November. The hotel's location was perfect for visiting all the major museums and top tourist attractions...within 15 minutes walk of everything we planned to see. Staff were friendly and very helpful and available 24/7. Our room (504, canal view) was large and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. There was some late night noise on one night from the adjacent streets - in an otherwise very peaceful place - but nothing you could really complain about in a city centre venue. We hope to return to Amsterdam some time soon and would not hesitate to stay at Dikker & Thijs again.

Dikker & Thijs ruined my stay. The Housekeeping Manager confronted me, refusing to honor the hotel "do not disturb" sign. I chose to use it; it threw the Housekeeping Manager into a dither. Never have I been subjected to the disrespect of insistence on staff entering the room I pay for. The Housekeeping Manager (I assume, as she confronted me in the hallway) insisted every room must be serviced "every two days" for "security." Never, in any hotel, from Rome to Nairobi, have I ever been forced to open my room to "inspection" after I said that there was nothing I needed. As a woman beyond a certain age, traveling alone, what are you implying by citing "security reasons" for entering my room? In every other hotel, globally, my privacy with a "Do Not Disturb" sign is always met with: "Is there anything you need, madam?" --not with harassment to enter my room. I have photographs/video of everything. All are time stamped. I recorded not only my minimal impact but the condition of D&T factors attributable to unfixed wear, age, and maintenance. I recorded carefully because after that insulting demand I lost all trust in D&T... and after overhearing the front desk on a call evidently from the Housekeeping person, whispering about entering my room. Humiliating and insulting. I was looking forward to this, my second stay. It will be my last. It was ruined for me. My Dutch friends invited me to stay in their home, I was so upset. Rather than impose on them--and face another argument with D&T, I said I would remain at D&T if none of my possessions had been touched after the demanded "inspection." Nothing was touched. But that this was even a question because of this forced intrusion is shocking to have had to even consider. (Other staff: desk, housekeeping, dining, etc., were appropriate and professional. Surely the behavior I experienced, though, is approved from top management. While I want no one to lose a job over this, such treatment is totally unacceptable.) NOTE: This review was sent to Dikker & Thijs days ago. No response, no explanation, no apology.

Pros: great location. In the heart of the city with the tram station across the street, canal tour stop near by, various restaurants, cafes, pastry shops etc a few steps away. For an old building my room was an adequate size, the bedding comfortable, the room and bathroom clean. Cons: This is not a 4* hotel as advertised. It has no bell boy to help carry your suitcase up and down the steps. I was given a room on the far side of the building and I had to carry my suitcase and almost tripped. Both in the hallways and the room the carpet is in dire need of cleaning or replacing. In my room there was a big brown stain on the carpet, very unappealing. Breakfast was an extra 15 euros instead of being included in the price and the hotel room wasn't cheap specially for a single traveller. There is no restaurant on site. They offer coffee downstairs but the room had only hot water kettle for instant coffee. No batrobe or slippers or hand lotion. I couldn't reserve trasportation from the airport to the hotel on their site as advertised. Not a good value at all.

Great location in the heart of Amsterdam. Close to many restaurants & shops and very accessible by public transportation. Triple Room was dated, but large enough (for Amsterdam) and clean. Everything worked and we had decent sleeps. Didn't have breakfast at the hotel, but cafe black just across the canal did just fine. Weird that you have to leave your card key at the Front for "safety" reasons. Good value for its central location so I definitely would recommend.
