Room was very comfortable and very well maintained. Didn't care much for their restaurant food...too gourmet for us. Staff was very helpful and always on hand to help with my mobility issue going into and out of the hotel. Enjoyed our stay.
Great location, beautiful views, and excellent service (especially the concierge). It was unfortunate that their lobby coffee shop was closed as it’s sooooo lovely!! You can rent bikes from the concierge and go around Amsterdam; Amsterdamian style ;)
Until we stayed at the Amstel, I always trusted the Intercontinental brand...not anymore. Be very careful before choosing the Amstel. Here the review: Overall: this is a dated, old hotel that is very understaffed. We had booked two nights, but wanted to check out as soon as we got there. (But it was midnight and we had no choice.) Look closely at the photos and read the real reviews--this is not where to stay. We love old hotels--they are irreplaceable. Unfortunately, the Hotel Amstel is very long in the tooth. It must have been last renovated in the late 1980s or early 1990s. It's tired. We paid, $800/night and felt very ripped off. Staff: Wonderful. They try hard, but they are massively understaffed. We were arriving late and wanted to ensure our suite would have an roll-away bed for our daughter. The operator said, "we are very busy and someone will have to call you back" Answer: 3-4 hours. To their credit, they called back in 4 hours. However, when we arrived at midnight, there was no bed. At 1am a bed finally arrive--there was only 2 people working. I feel sorry for the staff as there is not enough of them. Room: This is a dated hotel. The couch looked like they bought it from a college dorm in the 1990s. My wife suggested putting a towel down before sitting on it. The rug was gross, we literally rolled it up and hid it under the couch. This is like the old grand hotel that they neglected to renovated and it's running on it's last breaths. Draped don't close, so let's in light Hotel: The setting on the river is nice. The exterior of the hotel is beautiful. The pool area is cool. Everything else is really tired. Location: Good, not great. It's out of the center of things. Net: there are lots of great hotels in Amsterdam, this is not one of them.…
We stayed around the end of August in this great hotel. The rooms are spacious and bright, mattress was very good, the views from our windows to the river were gorgeous! Service was very good although it could be a little more friendly in terms of hospitality but overall a great stay!
I tried to book a surprise dinner once and the service and communication between them (reception/service supervisor)and me was so complicated and seemed that nobody was informed about what I was trying to do(availability, hours etc),that in the end I had to cancel because I was frustrated. I wanted to try another time so after a few days me and my partner call the hotels reception and..Trying to make a reservation for having dinner and make a surprise for my partner on her birthday. On that day we wanted to find out if we can arrive there with the boat and park it at the hotel. When we called, immediately they held us on the line for 4 minutes. Somebody eventually answered but couldn’t help us with our question and that someone would call us back. Two hours later we had a missed call and we call back but nobody had an answer about if we can arrive with the boat. We waited to be called back which never happened. We called again twice to say that we really need to know as we were about to leave with the boat. After being put on hold every time for several minutes we got the reaction that she put it on emergency but still, never got a call so we decided to take the “risk”. I also made a call and ask the receptionist if I can bring my 14,5 y.o. dog pet, a jack Russel terrier with me and they said that if it was a small dog on a leash we could bring him. So we did. We arrived at the hotel and parked the boat in front of it. Nobody noticed our arrival, nobody came to accept us or ask us anything. When we take a seat the waitress informs us that dogs are not allowed. I told her that I asked at the reception if my dog was allowed and they answered me positively only but then again she just repeats that dogs are not allowed. Unbelievable reaction for a waitres at a 5 star hotel. I had arranged to arrive earlier at the hotel and inform the reception that I want to make a surprise at my partner, give her a present and some kind of dessert in the end of our dinner. Instead of a surprise, the waitress that was disrespectful about my dog by the way she handled it,she had also revealed at my partner that I had arranged a surprise for her and she also said happy birthday to her. Amazing,I asked for a surprise and she reveals it from the first minutes. She ruined my surprise while I had informed the reception that it’s going to be secretly in the end and a surprise. I went to talk to our waitress as I was upset and I explained her nicely that it was a surprise and that she shouldn’t reveal it,I had to repeat it three times because she was trying to support the fact that she revealed my surprise again with big disrespect and with a rude way. She didn’t even apologize and try to put the responsibility outside of herself. Finally I just asked her to bring the surprise present and the dessert 15-20mins after our last plate of food. She sent the manager to tell us the same story about my dog and he added that they have a non-tolerance policy with dogs. Again we said that we called, they confirmed and we brought him so they should find a solution to host us. At this part he completely ignored and eventually said he would see what he can do to find a place for us. In the end we got a nice but in the breakfasts area table and the food that we tasted was not at all a 5 star hotel experience. It was amazingly medium in taste and inspiration. We both liked the cabbage and the burrata but all the rest were so “not a 5 star level of taste”. The supervisor was really nice and we could feel that he wanted to make up for it. Overall, this was Not a 5 star hotel service/communication/tastes and in general anything that we experienced that evening we were and are very disappointed as it was a special occasion and nothing went as it had to. It seemed that there was not a line that everyone follows and a Really Bad service concerning my surprise and how they handled my dogs subject. Nobody checked us when we arrived by boat or welcome. I would definitely not choose to visit the hotel again.…
with 9 ladies enjoying a wonderful experience: High Tea served in 4 courses, all lovely made and with very nice selected teas. We also had a glass of prosecco and the food was delicious. very nice staff, letting us stay even when the time was up, no pressure at all, so in all: recommended if you want to have a taste of luxury!
Friendly staff, very good breakfast. The breakfast rooms has a wonderful view to the Amstel - plan at least 1 hour to enjoy the start of the day. The rooms where amazing - even we had not the canal view, we enjoyed the features and the space. As the hotel is about 20 minutes walk from the centrum it is quiet in the evenings. The A-Bar has a terrace overlooking the Amstel as well.
My sister-in-law and I took our young daughters for High Tea at the Amstel Hotel, and from the moment we walked into the breathtaking lobby, I just new this would be an unforgettable experience! The pictures don't do the tea room justice - it was simply stunning, and had gorgeous views over the Amstel river. Even the music (think Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James) was played at the perfect volume - loud enough to create ambiance, but quiet enough not to distract. Format-wise, this was a little different from other High Teas I have attended, in that it was a 4-course menu, with each course accompanied by a pre-selected tea. I tend to be a little picky about tea and confess I was a tiny bit irritated at first that I couldn't choose my own, but now I'm SO glad that's how they do it! Each tea (including a couple that I would NEVER have thought to try otherwise) was delicious and perfectly-matched to the food, and our server described each tea as it was brought to our table so we could more fully appreciate the flavors. Each course of the food was presented beautifully, and the serving sizes were perfect. There are a couple really unusual (yet delicious!) dishes, but also the usual favorite High Tea staples, like finger sandwiches and excellent scones. The staff was so kind to the girls and made all of us feel welcome and incredibly special. I would absolutely do this again on a return trip to Amsterdam, and I'm so, so glad we chose the Amstel for our special mother-daughter tea!…
If you wöuld like to spoil yourself and get some good oldfashioned service, take a High-tea at the Amstel. We had a great place at the Windows, overlookig the Amstel river. All the food is delicious and definitely what you not normally get with every other high-tea what you can get in any other place. It's definitely a level up.
We had an exquisite time at the Amstel hotel last week! The property is magical and has the perfect location. The staff went above and beyond to make sure every whim was catered to, especially Duncan, who even had the kitchen make us poffertjes when we couldn't find any and had promised some to our son! Usually I don't take the time to write reviews but this experience was truly stellar and we hope others can enjoy the same level of luxury, pleasantness, and fun. Thank you, Amstel! We will be back!
