The Amstel is a glamorous hotel which has hosted Queen Elizabeth II, rock stars, movie stars. The suites are updated while retaining the old world charm. We booked 2 suites, both lovely while not huge. Very nice bathrooms, but the rain shower is placed so high that even my son-in-law who is 6'4 didn't like it. We arrived late evening... More

Grand old hotel with large room and comfortable beds. Staff are helpful and can catch metro or tram which is 5 minutes walk from hotel to city. Hotel has an excellent restaurant overlooking the river. Unfortunately there is no Club Lounge which is unusual for a hotel of the class. However great hotel for the discerning clientele.

We had the pleasure of spending 5 days at a conference in Amsterdam staying at the Intercontinental. A very upmarket and historic hotel that retains all the character of yesterday and delivers fine experience with attentive and friendly service. Food was of the highest quality whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner. Very central location with access to Ann Franks... More

If you are willing to pay the price for a slightly formal, richly historical (150 year old), full service, boutique-like, amenity rich hotel - this is it. The rooms are large, the bathrooms are large, heated towel rack, flat panel TV, minibar, coffee and tea, desk, etc. The wall paper, furnishings and the like are "period pieces" (some will like... Excellent service and a first class atmosphere in the heart of the city. The hotel is small enough that the staff recognize you and offer a personalized greeting each time you arrive or depart from the lobby. The rooms have soaring ceilings and tall windows with traditional old European furnishings -- with the patterns of Delft pottery in toile accents.... More

Arrived at 8:00 AM exhausted from a flight from California. We were welcomed and assigned our room by great staff. The river view and the room itself were perfect. Breakfast is worth going to Amsterdam for. We will be staying there again next year.

We stayed here for a week in a lovely room overlooking the water. Yes, the rooms are beautiful, the ceilings are high, the décor is perfect, the bed is heavenly....and yes, the staff are impeccable (most of the men look like models), friendly, helpful, polite. The building is gorgeous no matter where you look. The wifi was free and worked... More

This hotel is unlike any Intercontinental hotels I have stayed at. It is a 150-year old hotel that preserves the feeling of the past. The rooms, however are very well taken care of and you don't get the run-down feeling like you get in many historic hotels that are just uncomfortable. This hotel is great. The rooms are very nice... My favourite hotel in Amsterdam, Ideal location, a great experience, excellent food, outstanding value. There are several first class hotels in Amsterdam but in my opinion the InterContinental Amstel is the best and is certain to please.

Staying in Plantage & the East

Neighborhood Profile
Plantage & the East
The eastern edge of central Amsterdam provides visitors with the chance to imagine the city that Rembrandt called home (and to tour his historic house) while shopping like the thriftiest of locals at Waterlooplein’s massive flea market, or even enjoying a craft beer beside the tallest wooden windmill in The Netherlands. This verdant, serene, and stately part of town is home to Artis Royal Zoo, one of Europe’s oldest (and still best kept) zoos, and Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It's also an ideal setting for the Dutch outpost of St Petersburg’s Hermitage.
