Very good breakfasts.
Thank you for the lovely holiday.
We stayed for 4 days in Zermatt and the staff, the hotel facilities and location made it a very memorable and pleasant experience. The hotel provides pickup service from the train station: walking for 15 minutes with baggage is not for everyone. We requested a room with a Matterhorn view but unfortunately our first full day had clouds and showers, but awoke to the Matterhorn in full glory in a cloudless sky. The cleanliness of the room was excellent, with good furnishings and a very nice shower and bath. The sauna facilities and pools are not to be missed, especially after a long hike. Comfortable bar area, great breakfast and a very good restaurant all without sorting through some touristy places in town. Very close proximity to to trails and the lifts to Glacier Paradise. Would definitely stay here again.
However, it is the service I especially want to call out. Regina (sp?) at the front desk really cares about her guests and is just such a good person. On my way to Hotel Berghof, I accidentally left my backpack with several important documents on the train. Regina went completely out of her way to help me. She knew I didn’t speak the languages and didn’t know how things worked in Switzerland so she called around various SBB offices and not only FOUND my bag, but got the personnel at the station to set it aside for me to pick up! My vacation would have been ruined had it not been for her - thank you again Regina!!
I stayed for four nights. Sent an email with my arrival details and shuttle bus, small electric taxi actually, was waiting at Zermatt train station. Whisked me to the hotel and my bags got to the room before I did. All rooms have small balconies. Bedding was terrific.
Employees, and especially Andrea, were super helpful. He helped me plan a short hike up the hill behind the hotel, arranged for a load of laundry to be done, had travel adapters immediately available and was very personable.
Breakfast was excellent and the property has a nice restaurant for dinner and an outside sitting area / bar with a fantastic view of The Matterhorn. I didn't make use of the spa or swimming pool but they both looked excellent.
I can't recommend this property highly enough.
My family needed to change a reservation on a train to Milan and asked the front desk for help. The owner refused to help. Instead he sent my wife, who was on crutches with torn ligaments in her knee, to the train station in Zermatt, where he said she would need to sort out the reservation herself in person. She got no help at the train station and it was very difficult to get there. It turned out all Mr. Lerjen-Perren needed to do was make a phone call to the rail to book a new reservation, something I managed to do only after he refused to help.
At another point, when I asked if the hotel bus might help my wife -- on crutches and in pain -- just 50 meters down an icy street, the owner lectured me that he didn't run a taxi service, that the driver was off duty and that I should call a taxi to do it. My son and I literally carried her instead.
When I tried to explain my disappointment to him near the end of the trip, he was utterly dismissive. he had no interest at all in hearing my concerns.
In short, I paid an awful lot of money to stay at this hotel. I travel a lot and know good service from bad. I am not a demanding person. I rarely complain. But I get better service at most roadside hotels in America than in this expensive hotel. The location of Berghof is superb, right near the gondola. The rooms are nice and cozy. But the truly arrogant, dismissive and willfully unhelpful owner made it a deeply disappointing experience. (Plus, you'll see beautiful pictures of pools and spa for this hotel online. Be warned, the water is ice cold.)
There are many nice hotels in Zermatt. This one surely was not worth it. I advise you to look somewhere else.
The only thing that spoilt it were the rude staff, fine tune your customer service and I would give it a four star
The reception staff were very helpful, the rest and bar were somewhat rude and arrogant
On the bright side:
1)Excellent location for Matterhorn Express gondolas. Virtually one minute walk
2) top class gourmet restaurant: excellent dinner food and wine list
3) cosy rooms and lovely spa area with nice large swimming pools
4) very nice outside patio and smoking/game lounge
Negative points:
1) reception area a bit messy and not up to a 4star hotel
2) breakfast buffet and service could be improved
3) no room service and no evening bed turnover/cleaning service
4) staff ok but could be more helpful
5) the spa provides massages, but only one masseur so it's very difficuly to book a treatment - the SPA area is really beautiful but no staff is there to help
"The hotel is glad to pick up and drop off at the train station which is an added bonus"Read full review
