Hotel Sonne in Zermatt has become our annual home away from home in January. This was our 5th trip to Zermatt and we have stayed every time at the Hotel Sonne!

The staff and owners treat their guests like family coming to visit them in Zermatt. The location is only a few minutes from the heart of the village, yet far enough removed to be quiet at night.

The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle to all three lifts in the am and the skiing is truly spectacular.

The onsite restaurant offers an amazing breakfast buffet (plus eggs to order) and serves a wonderful different dinner every night. In addition the Fondue in the Stubli is outstanding!

I would highly recommend the Hotel Sonne!

My wife and I participted in a Ski Club holiday staying at the excellent Sonne Hotel. We have been regular visitors here over many years and we love the hotel and its welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. Following extensive modernisation and building extensions in 2018 -9, the hotel is now extreemly comfortable with a large lounge and bar area, increased dining room with a Tapas restaurant. The Bedrooms and bathrooms have been transformed too.Despite the increase in size the hotel is still a Swiss family enterprise with great personal service from the owners, the Forster family.
Many of the staff have been employed there for many years. The food is very good and plentiful.
From a skiing aspect, the new skiroom with heated boot rack and benches to sit down and put on boots is a great improvement. The Hotel arranges taxi transport to the ski lift stations every morning.
The spa has been improved with the installation of a sauna in addition to the various steam rooms. The outside jacuzzi/hot tub underneath the frozen waterfall is a unique and a great place in which to relax after a day on the slopes. The indoor swimming pool is also very inviting together with the indoor hot tub. We will come again next year. The Hotel Sonne is very special.

We booked a junior suite in this hotel after researching on Trip Advisor and the web generally. 2 nights planned for a long weekend in Zermatt.
Our expectations were completely blown away, this hotel is simply superb. Extremely clean, fresh, modern quality with traditional theme, nothing could be faulted.
Dining in the StĂĽbli, house special cheese fondue (yes, really) was excellent. Service at dinner and breakfast was wonderful, the staff and the owners could do no more to help.
Highly recommended.

We were really disappointed with the value for money.

We understand these are COVID times which is why we were in touch with the hotel in the lead up to our stay to check that the spa was all open and that there would be a restaurant open for my boyfriends 30th birthday dinner. They confirmed it all was and that if anything changed they would let us know.
I had also asked if the hotel would help me make his 30th special.

On arrival we were told all restaurants were closed, bar open until 10pm and we later found out the outdoor jacuzzi was closed too.

The room was nice but absolutely not worth the money, no mini bar, uncomfortable bed and pillows, not even complementary water (or glasses to drink tap water in). Nothing, I was expecting luxury and it just wasn’t.

I complained and was told that there were only 12 guests in the hotel (as all others had cancelled) and it was a very difficult time. I understand that, but as one of the few paying guests we just felt totally ignored, if they had been honest with us in the messages, we probably would have cancelled too. We did have our breakfast table decorated with happy birthday which was nice but knowing that the hotel was empty, an upgrade or free drink or something like that would have helped make up for the disappointment but we felt like they just didn’t really care.

Would not stay again.

Dear r90becca as a family business, "COVID" is the worst thing that could happen to us. :-( We are really sorry, we could not fullfill your wishes as you might expected them. Unfortunately we are not allowed to have the Minibar filled up because of "COVID". The glasses must be washed with 90 degrees because of Covid. As we are not allowed to have boiling water in the room (security reason) we had to take them away. We provide glassed from the bar on request and FREE of course. We usually have coffee and espresso mugs in the room, but due to COVID, we were not allowed to. I know its not 4 star like but we have no other choice. We serve all drink from without service charge to the rooms because of Covid. FREE DRINK: we did call the Fuji Restaurant and payed also 2 glasses of Champagne to them which they had to offer to you because your boyfriend had birthday. We called them and they told me that they give it to you. OUTDOOR JACUZZI: The outdoor jacuzzi is not closed! We just open it on reservation because we have to know the names and we have to be sure that there are not more than 4 people in the same time inside the jacuzzi (COVID reasons). But that’s our mistake maybe we did not explained it well by arrival. We will check the process and will speak with the front office team once more. BAR: On the 23 of October the canton Wallis closed all bars and restaurants at 10pm. WE HAD TO CLOSE! If we have still clients at the bar after 10pm we would pay a fine of 2500.-CHF. As a family business We as a family business we suffer a lot due to COVID. RESTAURANT: Yes that’s right that’s completely our mistake and we are very sorry for that. We had so many changes day by day due to COVID because the government changed the rules. But that should be no excuse and we are very sorry for that! SUMMARY: We are very sorry that we could not fulfill your wishes, but as you see the biggest problems occured due to COVID and its laws and orders from the canton Wallis! Bad feedbacks like yours hurt a lot, especially at times like these. Of course we made mistakes and we try to change them and adapt. But many points you described where a release from COVID. Anyways, I big sorry and who know: maybe everybody deserves a second chance in life!

Zermatt is a fantastic location so the quality of the individual hotels and restaurants set them apart from each other.
HĂ´tel Sonne is professional and friendly, spotlessly clean (very important to me), plenty of individual space, fabulous breakfasts for the fussiest of families and the Tapas restaurant is excellent.
The hotel made you feel individual and as if nothing was a problem. The location of the hotel was great - quiet but the huddle and bustle a minutes walk away.
We look forward to staying again.

First time in Zermatt and the staff at the Hotel Sonne could not have been better. Very helpfull, friendly, booked cable car and train tickets for us, coped admirably with our poor German skills and spoke English when needed.
Hotel felt Swiss, room was large and comfy and spa facilities were lovely, especially the outside jacuzzi!
We ate in the resteraunt from the Tapas menu, which was lovely and once you accept your in Switzerland paying Swiss prices, it was probably very good value. Location was great in the town (ok two mins walk just off the main street) and the shuttle service delivering our bags to tghe station when requested worked brilliantly.
Would recomend to all!

First of all, all the staff was incredibly friendly and efficient! The location of Hotel Sonne is absolutely perfect, centrally located whilst slightly off the main streets, therefore super quiet setting. The river provides a calming sound for people who would have trouble falling asleep. The pool is beautiful, there is a jacuzzi outside with view of the river/waterfall and a jacuzzi inside as well. The hotel Sonne is super comfortable in every ways and all has been thoughtfully built/remodeled. Breakfast is delicious. We have only good things to say about this hotel. It was recommended to us by friends and we will definitely recommend it to our friends as well! Outstanding!

If I could give Hotel Sonne more than 5* I would. Everything was exceptional from the staff that were friendly and accommodating in wanting to make sure your stay was enjoyable, to the spa which was lovely after a great day on the slopes, the rooms were spotless and comfortable and the food in the restaurant was delicious. The location was excellent being a short walk to the lifts and the heart of Zermatt but up a short hill to a quiet area with great views of the slopes and the Matterhorn. You can tell the family is passionate about their family business and always have a smile for you and particularly Fabian kept us laughing when we saw him. Our Christmas stay with Hotel Sonne exceeded our expectations and Zermatt seemed like a fairy tale. I would highly recommend staying here and we hope to return!

We loved everything about this hotel. The location, view, amenities, staff, … everything. We stayed for a week while touring and skiing. The women at checkin were incredibly wonderful, greeting, and helpful. They always had a smile on their face. The bar tender was super - he made phenomenal old fashioned’s and made you feel right at home. One day my wife went down after missing breakfast to only ask for a coffee and they ended up giving her two lattes and breakfast croissants. We stayed in room 512 and absolutely loved it. Funny story of one of our friends staying in a different room - they left their window open on the first night and woke up to a visiting cat on her head. Definitely made for a funny memory and laughs. Thank you for sharing your place as our home for a week. We are already looking forward to coming back.

Hi that sounds about right we have looked at that option but decided against due to the fact we have young children, so we normally fly to Geneva and then use Alpy Bus to take us to Morzine as only an 1.5hr transfer. Sorry i cant help anymore than that. Steve

Dear Sir, Dear Madame thank you very much for your email and the interest in our property. If you travel by train from ZĂĽrich, the fastest and easiest way to Zermatt will be trough Bern. That means, you will need to take the train from ZH (or ZH Airport) to Visp, there you have to change ONE time only, direction Zermatt. The whole trip takes about 3h20min. As soon as you arrived at the train station in Zermatt, our porter will pick you up to bring you safely up to the hotel. Just let us know in advance or call us on the way, to inform us about your arrival time in Zermatt. Hope I could help with this information Sunny regards and have a safe trip Hotel Manager
