Situated high above the Bay of Lugano this exceptional boutique hotel offers first-class suites and rooms. The tastefully arranged spacious rooms, the terraces with breathtaking views, two heated outdoor pools, tennis courts and a wide range of facilities leave nothing to be desired. Neither does the exquisite Mediterranean cuisine of Dario Ranza, served in the light-flooded restaurants. Jewel of the hotel is Kiso: a heavenly, exclusive Spa offering unadulterated luxury, privacy and exclusive treatments. Nothing else to be desired - a truly royal feeling.

I have been visited Lugano about 6 times over 56 years. When I first came at the age of 19 I was too poor to use a decent hotel and had to take a modest bed and breakfast on top of the petrol station by the railway line. I was always aware VPL was the best hotel in Lugano but it took me a lifetime to become wealthy enough to afford 5 star hotels. I love Switzerland and I wanted to treat my wife to a stay at the best hotel in the Ticino. The hotel is exquisite but my wife's experience was somewhat deflated, It started at check in. We cheekily arrived 30 minutes early but then had to wait 60 minutes because the guests in our room had been allowed to check out at 12:30. How long does it take to clean a room - 3 hours??? After an hour I hit the roof at reception and was told it was because we were being given an upgraded room but it still was not ready. The saving grace was that the room was fantastic - a huge suite with opening doors to 2 private secluded gardens. So we settled down to enjoy the hotel. On exploring we found the swimming pool area had been completely taken over by a fashion shoot. Why does it take 15 people to photo one model and completely evict paying guests? (More was to come when we found the same group completely blocking the corridor the next morning) My wife is a real aficionado of michelin starred restaurants in the UK and really appreciates fine dining - so we were looking forward to our dinner on the first night. What a let down. The dish which coloured everything was the risotto with sausage. It was a huge mass of brown with no contrasts in the taste. That is not fine dining. You get modest portions of food with exquisite presentation and several different surprising but complementary ingredients. The rest of the meal was competent but simply unexceptional. My wife was livid that I was buying her such an expensive meal which was really ordinary. Breakfast the next day was exceptional and was some redemption except my wife refused to go back into the main restaurant. We had gone over to the other Principe hotel opposite to see the gym and I thought it would be safe to use their buffet which looked nice if a trifle expensiveat 75 chf, What a mistake! The service was appalling, The main course was supposed to be served with rice but it ran out and we had to wait for 25 minutes for someone to bring across a tiny plastic carton from VPL. To add insult to injury on finishing the mains at about 8:30 pm the desserts had expired! The maitre d and staff were useless. I did get to experience that accompanying hotel again the following night. We arrived back the next night (after eating elsewhere) at 10 pm to find a business function going on. Every available parking space was full. So I took my car opposite to the other hotel to find all their spaces had been taken. So I ended up dragging some very heavy pots with trees off the roadway and onto the garden to at least get my car out of harms way - then walked back to the VPL - was anyone organising the traffic chaos = you must be joking So we had 3 days in the most beautiful room spoiled by overpriced ordinary dinners and inconsiderate intruders (photographers). What a crying shame!

We spent a night in the panorama suite. The suite was beautiful with a view. I could enjoy the swimming pool, it was quiet in the evening and we enjoyed the Supper in the room. The breakfast I must say was perfect, many choices, I enjoyed the sweets and let's not forget the view of the lake, the pool, the trees, there were a squirrel running like nuts on a branch. :-) The staff is lovely and attentive. Also very cleaned and thanks to the cleaning person who added 2 bath towels when we went to the pool as I took the towels from the bathroom.

Words are poor translation to express the beauty of this paradise. Garden Eden. We spend a few nights in one of the miraculous suites where we can’t stop gazing out as the balcony charms us with the very best view out of the lake. Just as the terrace and the restaurant of course where we enjoyed an excellent mouthwatering high class dinner and lunch. Claudio Recchia and the whole staff are doing such an outstanding job and fulfill us in all our wishes and leave no needs unseen. Our overall experience was/ is just perfect! We highly recommend this place for everyone who is looking for an excellent house, and a lover of exquisite gourmet cuisine. It doesn’t matter if you just come around to spend some quiet solitude, relax at the pool or use the privat SPA, treat yourself with a great massage (they provide plenty of amazing treatments and the therapist will guide you to dreamland), or to explore the coulisse landscape around Lugano with beautiful nature, but be sure you don’t miss to discover a new world of taste at the restaurant... The whole team is doing such an excellent job, we will be back for sure. Just a little note to add: it might be great to offer some cold pressed detox juices, or fresh ginger tea, Ayurvedic options for the breakfast/ Lunch. But as a big fruit addicted I just fell in love with your fresh apricots!!! We have absolut nothing to complain about. Thank you to the whole Villa Principe Leopoldo Team and Barbara Gibellini the Manager of this Heaven on earth, it was a pleasure to meet you.

The 5* property which keeps high standard for many years. Ideal place for romantic excape outside of the city but closed to the city (just 10 min in taxi; free transfer from/to Lugano train station). Very good breakfast with spectacular view over Lake Lugano from the terrace. Very good food in the restaurant, "clever" menu - not too long, not too limited if choice. It is evident, they are professionals in Food&Beverage. Very professional staff in all departments. The SPA is small, new, very nice, needed to book in advance. 30 min testing session was offered. Then we booked a private SPA for 1 h 30 min - it is enough.

First image on arrival, a deep orange facade of a lovely villa with flowers and palm trees. The minute you pass the front door , you can see right across the Lugano lake through a round double door. You pass that door without any delay, attracted by this promise of a view and there it is…. stunning panorama on the whole lake and mountains, open wide view with a definitive “wow” effect. The expected breathtaking beauty is here. We arrived on a wednesday afternoon and left on friday lunch. We had a junior suite but without lake view unfortunately, as we booked too late and the hotel was busy. But our suite was spacious and had a little terrace and the view onto the garden and some mountains. Peaceful and agreeable. For a 5 star standard, I was disappointed to have only old magazines on offer and totally boring as they were advertising ones on homes...etc. Better nothing than magazines from 2019 (in 2021) and full of adverts. And my companion noticed as I wanted to have a bath that the bath plug was missing and I had to ask for one at the reception. Other than this, our room was clean, the bathroom spacious and everything we could wish for available. That first evening we reserved the spa. An expensive treat as it is a private spa only available through reservation and not part of the open hotel attractions like we thought. It was a lovely experience and this spa is very cosy and intimate with a steam room, a small sauna and a jacuzzi. Perfect lighting, very clean and with hot and cold drinks on offer. The hour went fast, and we enjoyed it very much. The next day another amazing surprise, the breakfast venue… a terrace overlooking the lake and in the sun in the morning. One table at the corner of the terrace has the best view, it is definitely the place to be! So get there first in the morning! And what a way to start your day... What is on offer for breakfast is perfect and well presented. I particularly appreciated the special tart or cake different each morning, the possibility of a glass of prosecco and the lovely fresh fruit salad. The cappuccino was a little disappointing and served in too small cups for a breakfast drink. The actual tableware and cutlery are very elegant. The service was impeccable and all the waiters are friendly and attentive. Each night we had an aperitif in the large veranda heated for more comfort. They play music and it feels casual and relaxing. Finally on our last night we had dinner at the Gourmet restaurant. My boyfriend is a chef and has worked in many hotels and star Michelin restaurants. So we were looking forward to a dinner in a restaurant with 16 Gault et Millau points, a Michelin star and Relais & châteaux standards. We naturally started with a glass of champagne. What a disappointed surprise to see our “house champagne” coming from a Nicolas Feuillatte Brut bottle. This is no insult to Nicolas Feuillatte as it is a decent choice for a cheaper champagne found in any supermarket in France, and it is important to find affordable champagne. But in a Gourmet restaurant with an exceptional wine list and more than one page on champagnes alone, it is not what you expect. A good prosecco from the region would have been less embarrassing. We chose the unique menu for 125 francs, and then the wine pairing for each dish on top of that. Switzerland is very expensive but when you spend over 400 swiss francs for a meal for two, you expect high quality. We felt a little rushed at the beginning and asked the waiters to slow down after the risotto. Otherwise the service was very good and attentive. The bread was nothing special. Only small different buns and not tasting wonderfully fresh, not warmed, no butter, no olive oil, no balsamic, just plain. The lobster as a starter was tasteless and watery. We asked for some olive oil, pepper and salt to spice it up a bit. We were on this occasion a little shocked to be served salt and pepper in individual paper doses like in a fast food restaurant! I understand we live with the Covid, but we do not share tables with strangers and pepper and salt mills can be cleaned between meals and tables. We were offered by the waiter pepper from a proper pepper mill, but he held it and we could not have it. No chance with the salt. The risotto was fine, but not memorable where the risotto is said to be “king” in this region, this is a perfect example of a missed opportunity to present a local speciality. We expected the origins of the regional ingredients to be explained. For example to be presented with a special local olive oil or cut meats put forward, simply communicating the terroir and focusing on storytelling about the ingredients is a lovely way to make even simple food special. Between courses we were offered a sorbet, but when we asked about what flavour it was, our waiter, and then the manager, told us it was orange flavour, when we were served Mango sorbet. The fish (a turbot) was lovely and perfectly cooked. The waiter filetted it beautifully for us, at our table, going as far as serving the two cheeks, presented on the side of the plate, which was a nice touch. The desserts were tasty, the highlight was one of the best “moelleux au chocolat” I have ever had and which I ate enthusiastically, despite having very little appetite left! So it was a shame to have the Glamour of a lovely hotel and a gourmet meal be tarnished by a champagne choice that was not up to the standard. And I can say that we had a good meal but nothing special and only the moelleux to remember. All in all, the Villa Principe Leopoldo hotel Lugano is an excellent hotel to be sure. The staff were kind, attentive and welcoming. The venue had beautiful features and privileged location. It was just lacking a standout innovation, or the restaurant going that extra mile to be an outstanding experience.

Dear Guest Jeanne C first of all thank you for sharing your experience on Tripadvisor. Your comment are very detailed and informed and it has been a useful experience to share them with all the staff. And we thank you for your advise. In the room set up the missing bath plug is not our standard and we beg your pardon for this inconvenient. As you have well noticed some changes have been implemented due to the Covid restrictions, even if it seems to impact negatively the perception of the quality of our service. Just a short note for the champagne: we appreciate any comment and we thank you for this as well. We are sorry that we were not able to let you feel and experience the complete wide variety of alternative champagne that we do offer in our restaurant. Probably a misunderstanding, in any case a pity we should avoid. I truly wish we will have the chance to welcome you again in Lugano and finally let you have a impeccable experience, according to your expectations Best Regards
