#2 of 42 in Lugano
Travelers' Choice
The Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola, member of the “Small Luxury Hotels of the World”, is the only five star superior Hotel in Lugano and enjoys a privileged position inside a large sub-tropical park and with a beautiful view towards the lake. The elegant villa, built in 1860, combines the charm of a former era with the comfort and the care of a modern luxury hotel. The hotel offers 78 rooms, of exceptional charm, individually styled, provided with every modern comfort and with stunning park and/or lake views, balcony, terrace or loggia. All rooms, of which 28 are Junior Suites and Suites, have individual air-conditioning, and provide the most modern comforts. Restaurant Le Relais – 14 points GaultMillau-: In an elegant setting, our Executive Chef Bertogna, suggests a light and innovative Mediterranean cuisine, a balance between colours and delicate flavours that you won’t forget. In season lunch and dinner are served on the outdoor terrace, overlooking the garden and the lake. Restaurant Gallery Arté al Lago -1 Michelin Star, 16 points GaulMillau - :A theme restaurant inside an art gallery. Restaurant renewed and embellished through artworks and sculptures of contemporary artists of international stature who alternate every six months. Right on the shore of the lake, the Restaurant Gallery Arté al Lago offers a magnificent and unique view over the gulf of Lugano. Signature dishes are entirely new and original from our Executive Chef Frank Oerthle. Top notch are the facilities offered for meeting and events: any event assumes a special distinction - a grand banquet or less formal luncheon, business meeting or conference, private party, dinner or wedding up to 120 people. A large and impressive venue is the Sala delle Palme, set to recall an oriental atmosphere with its Indian Rajastan panoplies and Afganistan doors dated XIX century. All our venues are appreciated for the day light and the unique ornamentation and for the unclenching rooms, private sitting-rooms, conference halls of different sizes such as Le Pavillon connected to the park trough the outdoor veranda, La Sala Delle Colonne, Sala Letizia, Sala Carlotta and Sala Ottavia, the Biblioteca and Sala Kwium.Villa Castagnola has a spectacular indoor swimming-pool with panoramic views over the gardens, a Wellness Corner, a Clarins Beauty Corner, a Danilo Hairstyling, a table-tennis room, outdoor hard court tennis fields and a private lake terrace. The Hotel is well connected to Lugano’s railway station and Airport (only 7Km to the Lugano-Agno Airport), and has easy access to the Motorway.

Elegant hotel in the center of Lugano... Services are 7*. Restaurants are the best.. they have one Michelen 🌟 restaurant Arte within hotel complex as well. SPA and garden is oasis in the city.. Completely reserved garden with plenty of sun lounges... We loved our stay.

3rd hotel in Lugano where I felt like at home! Lovely decor and ambiance. Central and close to the lake and Monte Brè funicular. Garage (fee), equipped fitness, swimming pool (heated at 28C), whirlpool (was out of order when I visited), tennis and lovely grounds. 2 restaurants in the building (lovely buffet breakfast) and Arte al lago (see my separate review...❣) 5 min away by foot on the other side of the road, along the lake. From the receptionists/concierge, housekeeping to in room dining and breakfast room personnel I experienced genuine customer service and 'hygge' yes I felt at home! Good Clarins spa on site. Grazie mille ed arrivederci!

The hotel is not exactly in the centre, so without a car, it requires a taxi or a bus to get there. I was however very nicely welcome and given a suite (status upgrade), with a view on the lake. The room was very nice, a bit old fashioned, but rather functional, with a little terrasse. Wonderful. The swimming pool is inside, but with open to the garden. So here again, the best of both worlds. The little beach is however on the other side of the road. So it is required to exit the hotel to get there. But it is charming as the picture shows. Finally, breakfast was delicious. All in all, a fantastic hotel I only look forward to visiting again.

The service provided in this hotel is among the best we ever experienced. There is zero grounds to complain about the staff who are happy to help, dedicated and extra professional. Communal spaces of the hotel are full of old school glamour. The hotel garden is wonderful. The hotel boasts 5+ star certification and it all works until you are shown to your room. We stayed in the classic room and it was not up to the described standard. The decor was very XX century, the wallpaper is peeling in places, the ceiling panels in the small entry hall are hideous, no coffee/tea making facilities, the TV is tiny and placed in a manner which prevents you from watching it when in bed, the bathroom is like something from the 80ies. There is no separate shower, one has to climb into a tiny narrow bathtub, squeeze like a sardine and try to quickly finish the chore of showering. The toiletries are no-brand affair in squeezy bottles - similar to ones one finds in IBIS hotels, which is appropriately cheaper. It is all a bit of a disaster. I do not mind multiple use bottles for toiletries but let them be a recognised brand if you are running a high class hotel (there is a Clarins beautician in the hotel so one would expect the toiletries to be Clarins as well) - this was like something out of Lidl store. The breakfast is basic, with hot dishes requiring extra charge - very strange. The Michelin star restaurant in the hotel is great and worth the price. The other restaurant in the hotel - a supposedly fancy Italian place is okay but definitely overpriced for the quality. We paid 300CHF for dinner for two which was simply forgettable. The bar area is wonderful, and the drinks are expertly made and served with a smile. I would definitely come back to the hotel provided I booked a different room. When it comes to personal treatment and service the place is wonderful. Facilities let it down.

A gem! An old fashioned and traditional hotel that has maintained their finger on the pulse in terms of style, service and quality. No resting on laurels of a bygone age at the Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola. Elegant, fantastic service throughout the hotel, restaurants and spa. Quality of old and contemporary in style and ambiance. I always say there is room to try somewhere new each time you travel as life is short but I would go out of my way to come back to the Castagnola. As soon as I can book business trips again for team building or incentive trips for top performers this will be a venue at the top of my list. Given the covid situation the team at this hotel seemed to have gone above and beyond in maintaining their standards and providing excellence during a difficult period. Congratulations to the whole team - you made a few days away a very special experience and I would like to say thank you!

We spent 4 days before Easter in this nice hotel. The garden is beautiful and if you like the old style Belle Epoque, it is your place. We liked the pool and the whirlpool. Unfortunately, we couldn't enjoy the tennis court which was being prepared for the nice season, but it looked quite good too. The location is pretty good with a bus station in front of the hotel and it takes you 5-6' to the City Center. If you choose to walk along the lake, it will take you 20'. Pls note that this is a very nice walk with beautiful surroundings. As far as the service in general, it is not up to the expected standard. - Many times they forgot to bring a drink we ordered or they brought the wrong one (e.g. Limonade instead of sparking water) - We also had a bad experience at the restaurant La Rucola which I commented as a separate TA review under the category "restaurant" - Customer service: As a side comment, I pre-booked all dinners ahead of arriving to ensure having a table for each evening. I was told that La Rucola was closed...but it was open. I changed the reservation from Le Relais to La Rucola at the reception the day before...and they forgot to make the change. Luckily a table was free on that evening. Overall, we were not impressed about the customer service experience Last comment about the breakfast. In my view, it is not acceptable to pay separately for cooked eggs or omelette (e.g. 2 fried eggs with bacon for an additional 14.-). In a 5* (S) hotel, just unbelievable! For a 4* hotel, the rating would be 4 (on 5) points but it is only worth 3 points as a 5* (S) with this price level.

You know, the most amazing thing I can say about it is that we did just feel like our home. The staff were the member of our family. They were really Helpful, very friendly and always with a big smile:) The location is perfect, one door is close to funicular and the garden door opens to the bank of the Lugano lake. And I can't talk about the beauty of the rooms view, the lake and monte san salvatore. One thing I always mention is the classic atmosphere with antic stuff all over the hotel. And the pianist at the lobby takes you to dreams with fantastic music. Do not forget the restaurant and tasting the most delicious fish ever...

Very enjoyable old style place with cosy sitting areas in the lobby, best possible views from the rooms, great service at breakfast and perfect reception at the arrival (the lady also knows really well how to greet kids :)) Unfortunately, the soundproofing is really bad, you can literally understand nearly every word said in the neighbouring room. On top of that, the air conditioning is not working over winter and the rooms get really hot if the sun is shining. Generally, we have no problem to keep the balcony door open at nights, but not if the kid is sleeping just in front of it. So no good sleep for both nights we stayed here. The bedding is also not what you would expect from a luxury hotel. Its not bad, at all, but there is nothing luxurious about it either. Some 4* plus hotels already offer a better quality in those terms.
