If it was not for the hotel we would have stayed in Ascona.without doubt as within its historic centre there is a range of restaurants and hotels lakeside and facing its sweeping harbour as well as diverse shopping opportunities
However we chose Locarno specifically for this hotel as a base for our six night stay as we spent little time in the town itself
The hotel room tariff is consistent for a hotel of this quality in Switzerland and it specifically states rooms not bed and breakfast. We often do not always like regular breakfasts in hotels and many do exclusive and inclusive of breakfast. However we did inclusive and were not disappointed. It was not a typical breakfast and it changed everyday - healthy fresh products with creative combinations the likes of which we have not experienced before. The breakfast area "Feel So Good " was part of the hotel yet open to nonguests through another entrance
Firstly the hotel has reserved parking a few minutes walk away which was a bonus
The hotel has been renovated and has a lot of quirky art throughout communal areas and rooms
We chose a spacious corner room which was full of light. There were all the amenities and facilities there including coffee machine and safe.Importantly the mattress was high quality and extremely comfortable.
The rooms were cleaned to a high standard.
The reception is open during certain hours but the manager/owner is always available if needed and that is not surprising as there are only few rooms
The room had a nice sitting area and a quiet bedroom. The room was quite memorable for its upholstered walls with mirrors. Very unique and slightly quirky. It's an experience.
Our television did not work and only played music, but the complimentary iPad helped keep us entertained before going to bed.
The rooms also feature a selection of art that can be purchased by guests.
Our one disappointment was that during the winter there is no breakfast offered.
The rooms look beautiful with individual decorations, spacious and a beautiful terrace and cafe. What a disappointment!
At the moment of check-in we were told that no breakfast is being served. If we had known about this before our choice would not have fallen on this place we would have gone elsewhere. Images on this portal related to the nice terrace and cafeteria give a false impression. Don’t assume anything, reality is different.
The room was not clean there was dust on the tables and bathroom. Giving the beauty of the details in the room decorations, some of the decoration shown on the hotel website was missing.
The welcome drink offered on the hotel website was not served. Caffe dell’arte, yes, but only from the room Nespresso machine.
We liked the hotel’s simplicity which seems more environmentally friendly than huge hotels with 24-hour reception and lots of wastage. Instead of fridges in every room, for example, they have one big one in the hall to share. There also weren’t little bottles and packets of toiletries which are usually wasted. Instead, they had big re-fillable soap and shampoo dispensers.
Now back to Niels. Breakfast was also a unique and creative experience. No big wasteful buffet or menu with standard fare. Instead, they have a talented and creative chef offering something special. We had freshly made pancakes and the softest wholemeal, grain croissants I’ve ever had, both topped with warm homemade raspberry compote. (You can see these special pancakes on their Instagram site.)
My only suggestion would be that it would be wonderful if they could open the Café for breakfast every day. (It’s closed on Monday and Tuesday) Although the family sent us off to some perfectly good breakfast spots on those days, once we got to try their offer, I was very sorry that we only got to eat there once.
So, although I’d like to keep this hotel a secret, I’m writing this long revue in appreciation for all the effort, thought, warmth and creativity they put into their business. Thankyou to you all.
Our room was nice and comfortable but with a noisy air conditioning; We liked the bathroom. The breakfast was original, it was presented to us one course after another. It was not by choice but we enjoyed it very much. The garden is very pleasant with beautiful plants, an oasis in the heart of the city. It is a family run hotel and the staff was very pleasant. We enjoyed the city and tour of the stunning lake.
Breakfast is served at the table (no typical buffet!), and each day you get something new. You want an experience, this is a great experience.
We also enjoyed the combination of the décor, the art, the fashion store and art gallery.
Very strongly recommend.
1)No doubt the hotel has great location and beautifully designed rooms .
2)Staffs are also very helpful and relatively easy to deal with .
Negatives:
1)We arrived around 5:00 pm and there was no one to let us in as there is no reception and u enter the hotel through a store front which was closed! We waited around 10 minutes until someone responded and let us in .
2)Once we checked in we found that there is no elevator and we need to drag the luggage to the 3rd floor..
3) Air-conditioner was very noisy ( I mean really loud weird noises) so we couldn’t sleep the first night , told the staff and they said it is normal! Then we decided to leave the windows open during night which meant we couldn’t sleep before midnight and were up at 7:00 am as the street was very noisy ( people, cars, etc)
4) Breakfast was always a challenge . There was no menu and we never were given options to chose from . You should eat what was chosen for u and those choices was not standard( shrimp salad, smoked fish,...)
5) They chose to have refillable dispensers for shampoos and soaps which is great but during our stay they never replenished so we ran out of shampoo and soap after day 3.
Replacing/replenishing coffee and tea supplies in the rooms was also not consistent.
Overall that was not what I expected from a highly ranked hotel. I can say this place has a lot of potential but definitely will not get high ranks from me the way it is today
