Loved the stay at this family operated hotel.
The rooms are comfortable and food excellent. Quality of produce served at breakfast is to be appreciated and option of eggs cooked to order is not expected.
Wishing Oliver and his team all the best.

The welcome from Edith and Oliver Schmid, the hotel owners, was great and their support throughout our visit was exceptional. The hotel is only 3 stars but it deserves more. The food, particularly our five course dinners, were really special and the breakfasts plentiful with lovely bread from the new bakery in town. Any description of the hotel will include the friendly bar and lounge area but don't forget the jacuzzis in their wellness area and well appointed steam room and sauna to soothe your aching legs.

My husband, four year old daughter, and I spent a wonderful Christmas week at the Astoria.
We were greeted by name as we stepped out of our car, and the warm, personal service continued all week. At one point during the week the other family we were traveling with needed a doctor; the Astoria not only made the appointment for them but drove them there to make sure they found the office with no trouble.
We stayed in a family room, which gave our daughter her own "room" (you could shut a door between our beds and hers). There were also two balconies. It was spotlessly clean and had lots of space for hanging up our clothes.
Each morning we indulged in a hot breakfast buffet (a hot buffet is not easy to find). Each evening we were treated to a five course dinner... with a special kids meal. Each night there was a different "theme." The little girls in our group loved the midieval night and they got up and danced the evening a local ski instructor played his guitar and accordian.
The children also really enjoyed the play room. It gave them a place to escape while the adults finished their meals. It was far enough from the dining room that they could be loud, but not so far that we couldn't pop in to check on them. It was a perfect arrangement for everyone. (It is not supervised.)
The Astoria is a good location, just a couple of blocks from the shops and slopes. The only downside is that you have to lug your skis and gear each morning to the lift. You can rent a locker next to the information desk at the base of the lift; that way you can leave your skis, poles and boots there each evening. (Well worth the investment) Also, if you have a small child in ski school, the closest ski garden is rather small. We ended up moving our daughter to the school in Inner Arosa, which was a short bus ride away each morning.
If you go in winter, spend the money for a horse-drawn carriage ride. (Oliver and Edith can help book one if you need, they did for us.) It is worth every penny to ride up the mountain that way... just beautiful!

Three of us enjoyed an excellent ,high season (UK half term) skiing . The snow was perfect and the sun shone for a week without a cloud in the sky.
We had plucked the Astoria out of the internet due mainly to the prompt , informative and friendly replies to our questions.
The whole experience was like Swiss clockwork,:the train connection from Zurich via Chur led onto the mountain railway and up to Arosa in 3 hrs.
The Hotel is traditional , founded in 1911 , but bang up to date in decor and facilities.
The rooms are compact ,yet many have balconies .Decor is simple , beds comfortable , all very clean. The fitness room and hottub / sauna are of 5 star standard.
Ollie and Edith work very hard , especially with the dining experience, which is renown in Arosa. The 5 course evening meal is a real treat.
Walk to the skilift, deposit your skis and boots, medium ski area , most suited to beginners/ intermediates/ lazy sunlovers.
Children are welcome and the hotel is part of Club Mickey , providing Ps2, Table football , games and toys. WIFI , TV Toboggans,
We would definately return to this well run and friendly hotel .
Price , good value
Downsides ...trying hard to think of one..probably most suitable for families and couples rather than stag weeks!

Last month we went to Arosa, Switzerland and stayed in the Astoria Hotel. The young couple who are owners of the Astoria are very interested in making their guests have a nice experience with them. Our room came with breakfast and dinner since we chose the halbpension plan which is very common in ski resorts in Europe. On Wednesday nights they have a dinner buffet that consists of beautifully arranged delicacies/appetizers of many different varieties, and then various dinner choices, including fresh grilled meats, pan sauteed shellfish, roasted meats, at least a dozen salads, cheeses, fruits, etc. It was a lot of fun with the theme being Viking night. The owner, Oliver and his staff dressed up in Viking outfits and we could tell they had a lot of fun doing this with their guests. Aside from dinner, breakfast consists of a huge array of breads, cheeses, cereals, fresh cooked eggs anyway you like them, cappucinos, etc. The rooms are extremely clean and cozy with great views of the mountains and the surrounding snow laden alpine trees. There was lots of opportunity to ski and to do walking in the mountains. In the afternoons we sat in the hot tub looking out at the beautiful scenery. All in all, we had a very enjoyable time at the Hotel Astoria and we highly recommend it.

We stayed at the Astoria for a family skiing holiday - 2 adults and 2 kids , aged 6 and 7.5. We had 2 adjoining rooms with separate bathrooms. The rooms were adequate for a skiing holiday although not large - relaxation areas were available in bar, kids playroom and fitness/spa centre. We made good use of the spa after skiing every day - which was a great way to finish off the day! All floors had access to free wifi.
The food was excellent with kids meal available at an earlier time, so we could enjoy the great five course meals. The salad bar was offered every night and was delicious. The wine list was very good.
The service and attention from the staff cannot be faulted - they were very attentive to any requests from both adults and kids. The staff were also very helpful in answering questions on bookings and activities. All staff spoke english.
The location is convenient - with a short walk to the Tschuggen-Ost Chair lift, train station and access to the (free) buses.
Many thanks to Oliver, Edith and their team for a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday. We will be returning!

I decided to stay at the Astoria based on some absolutely effusive reviews in TA. I was slightly disappointed, but wouldn't have been had my expectation not been so high. It really is a very good hotel and the owners are charming and helpful. We chose a top floor room with a view. The shower room was uncomfortably small but we decided to trade that disadvantage for the charm of the sloping ceiling and the great balcony. We could have chosen a bathroom instead.
Breakfast included hot choices and freshly prepared eggs, which is unusual in a 3* Swiss hotel. Dinner had a meat and a vegetarian option, but no fish, which was disappointing. The standard was good, sometimes really very good, and it was fabulous that vegetarians were so considerately catered for here - even in the fondue chinoise evening, quorn was an alternative to meat. Deserts were ok but nothing special. The salad bar was indeed excellent, as another reviewer has pointed out. At the end of our stay, we were astonished to find that we were charged for tap water, and hadn't been warned that it would be chargeable. I think it is stupid to order bottled water in Switzerland, where the tap water tastes good enough to be bottled. We had ordered other drinks as well, which made the charge for 'tap' especially surprising.
Arosa is a long spread out village, so hotel location is important. The Astoria is quite well located, quiet, but pleasingly close to the train station, the Obersee, and the Weisshorn cable car. I'm not sure I would want to carry skis back to the hotel in winter, but of course they could be deposited at the lift.
Would we return to the hotel? Possibly. It is certainly an excellent 3* choice, and it would be unfair to compare it with the more expensive 4* Waldhotel or maybe the BelArosa, both of which have an unbeatable location, right by the forest and ski slopes. Still, we enjoyed our stay immensely. The alpine flowers were at their finest, the hiking was wonderful, and the breaks for lunch and drinks at the Weisshorngibfel (awesome views) and at the Hotel Hof Maran (idyllic position and great food) were perfect.

We enjoyed our stay very much. Good rooms, great food and wellness. By the way I think it is the only 3-star hotel in Arosa with wellness. There are 2 Jacuzzis, 2 Saunas and a steambath. The childrens playroom is fantastic. The food is great. You are being served several courses, some eveninigs they have a buffet. Our room was large enough with a nice balcony. We'll be back for sure.

We stayed in the Astoria for a week's ski holiday, taking one double room and one single room. Although we didn't know it when we booked, we were given neighbouring rooms at the end of a corridor, with a lockable outer door to make it into a kind of suite. This turned out to be a really nice feature. I don't know how many rooms have this facility, but if it could be useful for you then it's worth asking about at the time of booking.
The double room was definitely big enough for two people plus all the normal gear. As per usual for Swiss hotels the shower was super powerful. There was also a small bath which was good for relaxing in after spending all day in the snow. The single room was a fair bit smaller, and didn't have the bath. Still, it was perfectly ok for one person and we had no complaints at all.
Something that really surprised us were the large, modern, wall-mounted widescreen TVs in each room. I know you're not meant to spend time watching TV on a ski holiday, but it was good to have the option of watching on such a modern TV.
The two main reasons we chose the Astoria were firstly the extensive menu, especially for vegetarians, and the pictures of the very comfortable bar area. Neither aspect disappointed. The breakfast buffet contained something for everyone, a nice touch being eggs cooked to order. As well as the usual selection of fresh juices there was even Prosecco available (for free) - go on, you're on your holidays! Most nights there was a five-course evening meal. At breakfast you could choose between a meat-based main course or a vegetarian option. At the beginning of the holiday we thought we would probably eat out some nights, but the food in the Astoria was so good we actually ate in the whole time.
It's worth commenting here on how friendly all the staff were. That started with the owners the moment we arrived - Oliver parked my car for me! (it was a tight fit and there was a lot of snow around). The serving staff were really friendly too, which is something I appreciate wherever I stay. Although they had good English, they were patient enough to persist with me practicing my German.
Guests are asked to start the evening meal between 7pm and 8pm, so we made sure to enjoy an hour ot two in the bar area first. As the pictures on the internet suggested, this is a comfortable and warm area, with a large open fire. Service was excellent, with there being a large range of wines, a few different beers and a decent cocktail selection.
The ski room provided heated boot holders (nothing beats it) and easy access to the outside. We kept all our boots, skis and poles there and found it very convenient. The room key opens the ski room door from the outside for quick entry in the afternoon.
Walking in ski gear from the hotel to the nearest chair lifts takes around five minutes. Although the distance is not too great, it is up a moderate slope. The angle itself is not too bad, but a couple of times we found it slipy with ice and snow. Each morning there was an early snow-plough service through all the streets we used, but there was normally still a layer of ice left remaining. Having said all that, the walk is still fairly short, and it definitely wouldn't put me off this hotel again.
All in all, we had a fantastic ski week in Arosa and the hotel. We will definitely be staying here again - both for winter and summer - and fully recommend the Astoria based on our great experiences here.
