This hotel was chosen for us by my spouse’s employer (it was part of a work trip); if I was choosing for us, I would have seen other reviews here and picked something different. Still , I was hopeful when we walked in and the lobby and restaurant areas looked gleaming and somewhat elegant. Then we went to our room. I started to get worried when I saw the ancient-looking red carpet in the hallways, and old wood trim. Our room was supposed to be in the “renovated” section, but it was honestly hideous looking; except for a few weirdly-colored tables, it did not look like it had had any renovation at all. But that wasn’t the main issue - it was the smell, a noxious mix of what smelled like mildew and cigarette smoke. It was honestly overpowering. We asked for a new room immediately, and were given a slightly larger “executive suite” in a different wing of the hotel. It still did not smell perfect, but it was a big enough improvement over the other room that we agreed to take it. The furniture and colors were overly ornate 1960’s “European” style, with weird browns and reds, and lots of velvet textures. The bathroom had separate toilet room (common in nearby France, which is a big influence here in Geneva). The fixtures and tub were in decent condition, but the hand held shower head placement was awkward. The tub/shower, with a high side you have to climb over to get in, and no hand rail, was downright dangerous. The bed was so-so re: comfort, but the bedding was comfortable. It was unusually warm in Geneva when we were there, and the a/c seemed to work ok the first two days, but the last night we were there it didn’t seem to work at all. There is an openable window, which does help with temp and the need for fresh air. I will say that the room was very clean, so there’s that. The breakfast room is large, with a decent variety, but the two covered egg dishes were cold both mornings we were there (why was no one checking this?). One big plus was the staff - each person we interacted with was super helpful and friendly. I kind of feel like the staff are too good for this hotel - they must know the rooms are very sub par for the price, and are probably tired of having to find guests new rooms (and by they way we had 5 others in our party of 20+ that had to change rooms due to smell or other issues). The rooms did have some nice touches like robes/slippers, a safe, refrigerator, and two closets (at least our executive room had these). Another plus was that it was quiet - we did not hear neighbors or other noises, unless we opened the window, which let in street/train noise. The train stops right in front of the hotel, and it is only one stop to the main station to change trains for the airport, then just 7 minutes to the airport. You could also take a train or bus to Old Town (with all the charm and high end shopping), but I actually walked there each day - a lovely walk about 10 minutes to the lake and another 10 minutes along the lake and over the bridge. Lots of restaurants in the area of the hotel (with varying quality). Neighborhood where the hotel is feels very international, with people of all ages, nationalities, and languages. Some reviews mentioned a “red light district” nearby, but we didn’t see it (?) If it’s there, it must not be that big of a deal - we felt safe. We weren’t out late at night, so maybe there was something we missed? Bottom line: If the company that owns this hotel (Manotel?) would put some money into hiring a real interior design company to completely update/renovate the rooms, and fixed the ventilation/smell issues, it could be a 5-star hotel. I really vacillated on the rating for this. I’d say the rooms were a 2 or 3, but the rest of the hotel and staff were a 4. I had to go with the 3, since the smell issue shows a negligence on the management’s part that is just inexcusable.

Clean and centrally located hotel, 5-10 minute walk from Geneva Train Station. Staff were helpful and made recommendations for local restaurants. We didn't eat at the hotel as there were plenty of choices in the local area.

Part of the hotel is renovated and that is what you see in the hotel photos, but there is also an older section of the hotel that does not resemble these photos. The location of the hotel is its greatest strength. The size of the rooms is slightly above average for a European style hotel. However, this hotel is not a four star hotel when compared to hotels in the U.S. or Canada.

Room was fair in size but it’s furnishings, unfortunately, was old and worn. Room was hot and warm (quite unbearable in the day and uncomfortable at night) despite setting the temperature at its lowest and fan speed at highest - and this was Spring. Essentially, air circulation in room was nonexistent. The room’s coffee machine was old, stained and unclean - running hot water through it carries residual coffee grains. Breakfast offering was basic. 3-star at best.

I was staying weekend at Hotel Royal with my colleagues. We arrived in the evening and check-in was efficient. Room was clean and spacious. Breakfast was quite basic. Nothing extra, but there is all necessary ingredients. Hotel location is good and you can walk to Lake Geneva and train station.

This hotel is central and in the heart of the city. Rooms- The room I was allocated was just awful ..this has to be the hottest hotel in the world. Air con doesn't work. Its noisy its old and its tired. Kettles don't work. Shower is old and clunky. Nothing at all impressive in the hotel room. Bathroom smells and is too hot. Breakfast- The continental option is acceptable the rest is awful.. food is cold most mornings. Some ham and meats ok but poor selection over all . Lobby area is nice. The staff in Bogeys bar are ok .Nice ambience. The bistro food was good but like everything here is expensive. Alot of hotels in Geneva. I would shop around ....

Excellent hotel with lovely staff. Nicely decorated hotel rooms with everything that you need including a free bottle of water on arrival which was a lovely touch. Loved the mini fridge in the room. Late check out as standard. The hotel bar is relaxing and the service discreet and professional. We really enjoyed our stay here. Brilliant location. The hotel always smelt lovely!

Lovely hotel and staff but spoilt by the jazz playing throughout the ground floor! Lobby, restaurant and breakfast room. Never have I been so glad of a table of noisy Italians near us at dinner! Reception said the music can’t be changed or the volume turned down. Apart from that the staff were very pleasant, dinner was good and breakfast OK. But we wouldn’t stay here again because of the jazz!

This is a lovely hotel, I stayed here while I was on a work assignment in Geneva and I loved every minute of it. Starting from the front desk staff who are so courteous and kind, indeed all the staff I met were very warm and kind. The room was always kept clean, heating was good and the decor is beautiful. In addition to all this the location of the hotel is perfect it’s downtown, there’s a tram stop right in front and it’s about 3 minutes’ walk to the central station (Cornavin). I would definitely recommend this hotel and stay there again if I return to Geneva. The only drawback is the fact that they serve the same things for breakfast every day but then it’s good food!
