Two iterations before becoming a hotel, Au Violon was a convent then prison. Wonder what Basel was like then! Now, the hotel is nestled in quiet location--literally above the fray--aobve the very lively town center, main streets lined with restaurants (including an OK sushi one), the theatre, and more. To get there, you can walk out the frond door and... More

We spent two nights in this lovely boutique hotel. The staff were extremely helpful, from the time I made our reservations until the time we left. I HIGHLY recommend this hotel if you're staying in Basel.

We had a four night stay in one of the 'Police Station' rooms (no 12) overlooking the Christmas market. The location of the hotel is ideal for a winter break being very close to the Barfűsserplatz, main tram stops and the river Rhine as well as the two main Christmas markets. The room (which had a TV - but we... More

Very charming place in the middle of Basel. This building that has almost 1000 years was first a religious building and then for around 100 years, a prison (until 1995). This is why you can get 2 types of rooms: Police station or Cell. The job to transform the prison to a hotel is very nice. When you are in... More

This hotel is a former prison, but you wouldn't know that when you're in the lovely restaurant or one of the cozy bedrooms. The location is perfect (we were delighted to find the Christmas market so close by during our December visit), and the staff members we dealt with were polite and helpful. I would have appreciated a kettle in... More

If you visit Basel, home of the Beyeler Foundation and many other museums, the hotel "Au Violon" is a must. It is a former prison converted in a pleasant hotel with 20 rooms on two floors, some of them with a view on the courtyard, other overlooking the heart of the city. It cannot be easier to access the old... More

We had a mini-holiday in Basel and stayed at the Au Violon. The hotel and restaurant is in a scenic location, great views and has lots of character - especially as it's the former city jail. The hotel was clean and comfortable, although the reception area was under-resourced. There wasn't a luggage room and staff were not always on hand.... More

"Au violon" is a former prison, and so are the standard rooms: a mixture of prison cell and monastery. The standard rooms are quite small, no carpet on the wooden floor, no sitting opportunities beside the single wooden chair in front of a small table. No atmosphere at all. There is neither a TV not a fridge in the standard... More

I stayed in a Category C room (room #16) for 1 night (mid June). It had 3 windows: 2 at head height, 1 a narrow, vertical window looking into a leafy inner courtyard. (Carousers late at night (about 01:30) singing loudly with a guitar propelled their noise right up the courtyard walls (like a canyon); closing the window did not... More

I adore everything about AuViolon. Meri is alway so efficient and lovely. The setting in the garden for dinner is so exquisite in the month of June when I come for Art Basel. The rooms are clean and streamlined. Beds are so comfy. I always have a view of the rooftops and churches as the building is set way up... More
