The Good: 1) The staff is so friendly, helpful and accommodating, A+ 2) The location is really great if you want to be able to walk to/from train station with luggage and be easy walking distance to all the main sight seeing & eating places, A+ (and why we booked this place) 3) The rooms are inexpensive 4) Some rooms... The location is excellent - very close to everything you want to see in Florence. The staff was friendly, the rooms are clean, and the toiletries come from the Farmacia Santa Maria Novella and smell wonderful. The bathroom was huge and had a lovely claw-foot tub. But...our room was a bit odd. It had a metal spiral staircase leading the... More

Every room is different, but as we experienced three of them during our stay the one thing they seem to have in common is that they are a little tired decoratively and with some very strange and esoteric wall coverings. As they say this is not a hotel, the staff are wonderfully friendly and pleasant but are not there all... More

We were highly looking forward to what we thought would be a luxury suite with a unique twist. First of all - the photos do not look anything like the place. We stayed in the "play room" suite which had a weird creepy artwork and the rooms were very dark, something out of a horror movie came to mind. Room... More

I was in shock when i saw a picture of a slave to be use as a simple decoration item in a "black & white" room. I started to wonder if it would also be social acceptable to decorate with a picture of Holocaust... but besides that the staff was very friendly, clean room, good price.

Guest house about 5-10 minute walk from the train station. Very friendly. Lovely room , with a nice room. Black and white room. Very quiet. Was quite hand safe as a solo, female traveller. Lovely simple breakfast brought to the room each morning. Only thing missing was a friend in the room to keep water cold. However there are fridges... More

This is a bed and breakfast concept of an old house that has been transformed in a boutique hotel. I stayed in the library which was very cool and interesting. Breakfast was served in your room which I really enjoyed. Very picturesque and charming. On the minus side my room was quite noisy as it was on the main road.... More

We had a mixed experience at this hotel. We booked and wished to cancel, but they would not let us, so we had to stay there. But when we arrived, we were upgraded to the land of luxury. The staff (of one) was quite friendly and helped us with our questions. The breakfast was small but our cab arrived a... More

If you expect a typical hotel, this is not where you want to stay. If you however, want something different, then this is the place. First of all; We got lucky because on arrival we were upgraded to a better room, we saw the room we were meant to have and that was not like the pictures at all. So... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
CASA HOWARD Guest Houses – Rome and Florence The Art of Hospitality. Casa Howard Guest Houses are not hotels. Each Casa Howard is a beautiful private house, in an outstanding location whether an apartment, palazzo or farmhouse, which gives personal service, and where some typically "hotel" ideas, methods and services have been borrowed. With uniquely designed, cosy rooms it’s like staying in a very relaxed, stylish friend’s home – as guests you get the keys of the house, you enjoy the original furniture and objects, you feel the atmosphere of the house. A mix of quality-to-price ratio, uniqueness of location, private home heritage and introduced guests approach deserved Casa Howard many featuring on the international press. Last but not least, CH are now in the bestselling 1000 Places to See before You die !!• A SENSORIAL EXPERIENCE : how different is the feeling of spending some days in a real private house rather than in a public grand hotel, in the top art city of the world! LUXE: we may not define CH a luxury place, rather a true exclusive place (nonetheless we are featured on most of the luxury guidebooks in the world, like the LUXE city book of Grant Thatcher or the LOUIS VUITTON guidebook). Casa Howard (Florence) is located close to Santa Maria Novella, Casa Howard (Rome) close to the Spanish Steps – the ideal spots for accessing the city’s profusion of architectural treasures and shopping! Urban chic close to the action. Suave and surprising, the Casa Howard is located close to the Santa Maria Novella – an ideal spot for accessing the city’s profusion of architectural treasures. This is a Guest House, it is not in the hotel category (e.g. they do not have a concierge, nor do they provide porters etc); it is a private family’s houses partially opened to introduced paying guests. Former guests have a priority booking channel. A mix of quality-to-price ratio, uniqueness of location, private home heritage, and introduced guests approach deserved Casa Howard some awards and many many featuring on international press. It is an intriguing mix of private mansion and hip hotel, providing guest accommodation in stylish apartments. Eco attitude : see down *All the original floors and ceilings have been maintained, there are flourishes of pure silk taffeta at the windows, and many love the chic designer touches such as the occasional black silk sofa, sunken marble bath, full-wall padded bed head, mosaic inlay or 18th century French writing desk. For relaxation after a day’s exploration along the Via Tornabuoni, unwind in the hammam. ... more   less
