Upon arriving at this hotel my small group of ten were directed to their respective rooms. Most of the group were put into the main part of the hotel and my husband and I and another couple were sent to the attached building. The hotel lobby was a series of cold drab rooms and during our stay I noticed that the front desk was often unattended. When entering my room I was a bit shocked based on the price and the other hotels we had stayed at on this trip. The room was awful, smelled of mold and furnishings were old and quite well “used”. We went down to the lobby to check to see if the other building was a bit more livable and were told their were no rooms available. We were ready to change hotels but they found us (and the other couple in our building) rooms in the main building. They were marginally better. A little m,ore room and no odors Our room was in the front of the building and very noisy. Our friends were in the room next door to us and they thought they wer doing construction during the night on the room above us. I am not sure where the noise came from but it was quite a disturbance during the night. Bathroom horribly appointed with no room for any of your toiletries. Breakfast was acceptable but nothing special. Fortunately we only had two nights to deal with. Definitely would not recommend this hotel. Location was the only plus

We stayed three nights in October 2018. A lovely, older style hotel, with beautiful classical features. Lots of silver fittings in the bathroom. Very comfortable room and bed. We loved the breakfasts in the rooftop dining room, both the food and the views overlooking both the small bay and the old city. A minor issue with the shower over the bath - water leaked under the glass screen onto the bathroom floor. Required use of more towels than we wanted to mop up water. Use of the small heated pool and sauna was really nice on a cold, rainy day.

We found rust in the shower. The beds and towels had a bad smell. Dont expect a good breakfast. They use cheap food. The building could have a nice charme but there would be too much to do so fortunately they close. The only good thing is the view but we left after our first night.

In it's heyday, I'm sure this must have been a very grand and impressive building. Today, though it still boasts many of the original features of historic art deco opulence, I'm afraid the shine has worn away. Saying that, we found our stay here comfortable and very convenient. As the title of this review suggests, the location of this hotel is outstanding and somewhat makes up for any little flaws it may have. Directly behind the hotel is the main piazza with the fabulous Duomo and many restaurants, cafes and bars. The breakfast room is lovely, with views of the huge yachts and other assorted vessels and the breakfast itself is plentiful and has loads of choice with fresh, local ingredients, hot and cold dishes and fresh pastries etc. The spa area was ok but only the pool was in use. There was no sauna, steam or jacuzzi available during our stay. The sun terrace was also out of operation so to enjoy a day relaxing in the sun it was necessary to pay for a bed at one of the private solariums around the island. The views from the roof terrace are second to none but you do pay a premium price for drinks, snacks and food for the privilege. Not sure we'd stay at this particular hotel again but we did enjoy our stay on Ortigia.

This beautiful old lady is about to close for a complete (and much needed) re-furb. But those who say that this is a 1 star hotel clearly haven't ever actually stayed in one star accommodation! Huge rooms with beautiful old furniture, marble floors, balconies with a spectacular view over the bay from all of the front rooms, good soundproofing (you can hear the man in the next room snoring in most 1 and 2 star hotels!), big bathroom, fluffy white towels, adequate air con - although really not needed when we were there - better to have the window open! Quiet at night. Thankfully few lackeys and other accoutrements of most up-market hotels who want to carry bags, fold toilet paper, and bow and scrape at every turn. Reception staff were charming and helpful, as were the staff in the dining room at breakfast, but the poor chamber maid is seriously over-worked and had difficulty getting round during the 4 nights that we stayed - disgracefully understaffed in an important area of customer service. She was still doing our room at 4pm one day, having been on the floor when we went out at 10am. And the floors didn't always get cleaned. Excellent breakfast buffet to accommodate all varieties of custom. Lovely fresh breakfast rolls and cakes, real yoghurt, fresh fruit - and very good espresso coffee freshly made. The plumbing was splendidly Heath Robinson, but worked. There are probably better value hotels in Ortygia, but not with this view!
