Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

Finding this place was a bit of a nightmare but once there (Hotel Santa Marina) we were led to our hotel?just across the square. The room was quaint and facilities ok apart from a headboard which looked like someone had shredded? Very odd. Breakfast was in the Santa Marina and

great location, friendly staff, clean rooms. breakfast was nice good selection every morning, bar open at very limited times but probably due to time of year. good for the price if you want 5 star this isn't for you.

Lived up to higher expectations. Clean and a good size. Easy to find if you’re familiar with Venice, staff were friendly. Rooms were cleaned daily. The only criticism would be the breakfast, it may be fine for most but we would have loved some poached eggs and other warm

If you want a taste of decadence I would recommend this hotel. The wallpaper is actually fabric, there is a minibar plus a second room with sofa. The bathroom a very posh shower and sink. Finding the entrance to the hotel was difficult as it has merged with the san marina across

Agreed with Brownsville. We took the Vaperetto to Rialo and it was a short, yet confusing first trip to the hotel. Make sure you have a proper map. Would certainly stay again.

The Marinella is the annex of Santa Marina. Its an external building. they are generally ground level rooms with windows facing the street behind (granted the street is really nothing more than an alley walk way, but its an active street, as are most streets in Venice) I stayed in the annex in October. I found it to be just the same as staying at the hotel except, no waiting for an elevator or stairs and a little more privacy. You simply walk around the corner to the main hotel to access concierge services or have breakfast... you get all the services of the hotel just not actually in that building. I had wifi, maid service, clean lovely room, breakfast at the dining room in the main hotel and activities suggestions and taxi booking services from the front desk. It was a pleasant stay. The images of the room listed here as "professional" are actually my pictures of my room. I did not take pictures in the dining room but its lovely too and had a decent selection for breakfast. My ONLY complaint is that the shower in my room was super tiny! big enough to turn around in but not as large as most western travelers are used too... if you are a little over weight it can be a bit of a challenge. But I understand from a local that this is normal there as space is a commodity and they want to encourage water conservation. :)
