Travelers' Choice
Hotel Palazzo Stern is an historical Moorish Palazzo on the Grand Canal. The location is very convenient: easy to reach, close to the main attractions and at the same time in a very Venice area. If you are looking for a unique venetian experience in the real Venice and far from the crowd of the mass tourism we are the right place to choose.

This was our second visit and was most enjoyable again. The hotel is located in a beautiful building at a great location. The rooms are very comfortable and spotlessly maintained. Breakfast is served on the wonderful terrace on the Grand Canal by really attentive staff

Small but beautiful room. Very attentive and helpful staff. Breakfast on the terrace looking out over the Grand canal is served at your table . The evening meal we had was excellent . Our plane was cancelled we arrived via Madrid at 2 a m the concierge made us tea and biscuits and got our bags to our room whilst we enjoyed the refreshments . excellent service .

Lovely traditional boutique hotel on the grand canal perfectly located adjacent to Ca Rezzicono vaporetto and it’s direct link to the airport. Staff were great and the breakfast was lovely. Short stroll to all of the major sites and some great restaurants within a 5 minute stroll

The location of this hotel is fantastic and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I treated myself to a junior suite overlooking the canal and it was gorgeous. Bear in mind the vaporetto goes late into the night so bring earplugs if overlooking the Grand Canal. While I really enjoyed my stay there are some maintenance and staffing issues with this hotel. A problem with the jacuzzi was never fixed despite my asking and the bathroom was in need of a bit of tlc generally. Also there is a peculiar lack of service at the terrace. This is nice in some ways as you can sit undisturbed if you wish and not be upsold drinks etc but every now and then I did wish someone would appear with the offer of refreshments! You could wander in and find someone eventually but it seemed odd they don't make more of this prime location. They do dinner and honestly I would skip it. It's fine. But nothing special apart from the location and as you can enjoy the view any time as a guest I would stick to drinks/breakfast and have dinner in Campo Santa Margarita/head to Zattare for better quality food and less noise (see below). The hotel offer a transfer to a sister hotel-Locanda Vivaldi for dinner. The location of this is fabulous - high on a rooftop in San Marco and very private. The food is not great though. Not terrible. But definitely the weakest meal of our trip. I usually avoid hotel meals unless they come recommended and the two hotel dinners I had in Venice reminded me why. In addition to average food (and a pricey bill) the two meals we had were both accompanied by very incongruous and intrusive dance music blaring out and making conversation difficult. Seems like there is a shortage of management staff keeping an eye on the kitchen. The "juice" at breakfast was undrinkable - I think it was heavily diluted cordial. Very poor and a weird corner to cut. The rest of breakfast was fine and the fruit salad was a lovely touch. Anyway none of this takes away from the gorgeous interior (Moorish mosaics and features everywhere) and the location which is right beside the Ca Rezzonica Vaporetto stop. Bottom line - I would return happily but skip the meals. I note some of the reviews of the smaller rooms are not great and I did overhear guests complaining about lack of light etc etc so ask about details before you book so you don't get an unwelcome surprise on arrival!!!

Our "Deluxe " room booked 5 months in advance was the size of a closet, with zero view (rooftops). They gave us a room without a working phone. When we went down to the desk to report the problem, their resoonse was "yes, the phone in that room never works". The shower was a disaster - the hot water repeatedly stuck on the full on position, filling the room with steam. Their response: "yes, it gets stuck when turned on". No one attempts to fix anything at Palazzo Stern! Proved impossible to regulate the temperature in the shower - oscillated back and forth from scalding hot or ice cold. Poorly maintained for what presents itself as a very classy hotel. Grossly overpriced for what they provide in terms of quality service. Location very good and the breakfast terrace on the canal gives it 3 stars.

What really struck me about this particular visit to the Stern is from the moment I walked into the Lobby in the Santa Charia off Santa Croce to arrange for the parking of my vehicle, until we left five days later in the water taxi I felt I was dealing with experienced people with a safe pair of hands who were committed to helping me. Indeed I had felt that, in all the months leading up to this visit as I made my arrangements for my daughter and myself who were on two different trajectories to the property. We came together; one having arrived by plane, and the other by road and had five blissful days in Venice and that was in no small part due to Sabrina and Manuel on the front desk. Impromptu diners, the bewildering charging structure of the Vaporreto system, confirming restaurants, which would otherwise cancel your booking, were all adroitly handled by one of them. When you are trying to revel in all the hidden delights of Venice that kind of help is invaluable. The hotel, a palace on the Grand Canal, is a delight. You can move back into what is my favourite Seistre, the Dusodoro, and be on the Zattere within 15 minutes or dash across to an empty St Mark’s Square at 7.30 am via the Accademia Bridge. It is also well placed for the concerts at Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto (La Traviata) and Chiesa San Vidal (Vivaldi) and the Guggenheim and Accademia museums. Breakfast is now served at table by the hard working staff and in the Stern tradition is a straightforward simple affair. But the really important point is it is one of the few hotels, which has a terrace on the Grand Canal. You eat your breakfast overlooking the canal. The rooms are decorated in classic Venetian style and are attended to promptly both for cleaning in the morning and turn down at night. For me the service, the position and the fabric of the building lead me to believe it has to be one of the very most competitive properties on the archipelago. However I return to my first point the Stern excels in getting you there efficiently whether you arrive by plane or road and once there is invaluable in negotiating the idiosyncratic ways of this remarkable place. My heartfelt thanks to Sabrina and Manuel for their contribution to making it such a wonderful stay.

We loved the hotel. It has an excellent position on the Grand Canal yet when you sit on the patio you cannot see it?! Try booking the one table which is higher in the corner where you can watch the busy world go by. Some frustrating things are that breakfast is served with your fruit salad and hot bacon and eggs which then get cold. It is a bit of mystery in communications, the best kept secret is that they offer dinner in the evening, apparently with Covid no menus or promotion can be circulated. We honestly thought that the hotel did not do dinner so went out each night except the special Regatta evening which was also badly promoted not mentioning the excellent music accompanist? The hotel is right by the waterbus stop from the airport which takes about an hour and is much much cheaper (10 times) than the Hotel arranged taxi...it was hard work to get the hotel to suggest this. The staff were all excellent (especially the younger ones) and very helpful... we should have just asked "do you do dinner"?!

The hotel is in a great area of Venice, located right on the Grand Canal. The inside of the hotel and rooms are decorated beautifully. The hotel assisted with transportation from the airport to the hotel after a long day of travel, and the limo-style van and the hotel's private boat could not have made it easier. Would definitely stay here again.

Simply stunning. The location is perfect. Great service from start to finish. We booked direct with the hotel and as such they offered to help with our arrival plans. For a small fee (€60) they organised collection at airport in a private car which took us to their sister hotel at which point we transferred to the hotels complimentary private boat so that we would arrive in style. The hotel is simply stunning, a first time Venice visitors dream. We were in room 306 which has fabulous views of the grand canal. It’s huge and really well air conditioned. There was a bottle of Prosecco in our room as it was a special anniversary trip, which was a lovely gesture. We were given a basic map at reception and shown a few highlights that were within walking distance and off we went exploring the beautiful streets. We enjoyed 3 fabulous nights here. We bought a 3 day pass on the ACT boats (available at main stations like St Marks) as it’s great for getting around and one of the stops on route 1 is right outside the hotel. We took advantage of the hotels free one way trip to the glass factory on Murano. It was great to see the skill of the glass blowers, and you can buy genuine items in their showroom but beware they are expensive compared to when you get outside. We only bought an Xmas tree decoration so when you factor in the private free ride it’s still good value even if twice as much as in the shops of Murano. From here you can get a number 12 ACT boat to Burano and a few other islands if you wish. And an ACT boat back to Venice at the end of the day. When leaving we used the public boat service to the airport (€15) which was great and again can be boarded right outside the hotel. When at the airport and you see the queues to get from the airport to Venice you realise how special the arrival the hotel organised really was. The breakfast is lovely, but I think I’d need a change / choice after 3 days. The pigeons hovering around for scraps take on an almost comedic role as you stay longer but the canes you can use keep them away from you are useful. (Little tip, try to sit at the 1 raised table under the tree for breakfast - view is that much better) All staff were lovely and friendly… HIGHLY RECOMMEND !!!.

We had a wonderful stay at Palazzo Stern - right from the first moment when their staff welcomes you from the water boat all the way to check out! The hotel is a beautiful old palace and a piece of art itself - we couldn’t stop taking photos of its interiors! The location is right on grand canal and gives you a real feel of Venice! We really enjoyed have breakfast or dinner on their lovely terrace and watching gondolas and water boats go by! It was easy to walk around to all the major spots like San Marco or Santa Maria. Special thanks to Manuel at the reception - who is always patient and helpful with our queries ,and their house keeper Junior who is ever smiling! I would highly recommend staying here if you want a real Venetian experience with all the comforts.
