Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

This lovely guest house is just off the beaten track, and absolutely wonderful. The hosts are delightful and warmly welcome you into their home. Just be aware that there are 3 flights of stairs and no lift, so pack light! The breakfast was delicious and the room clean and comfortable with great views of the canal. It is perfectly placed for exploring all of Venice with many restaurants just round the corner, so no need to walk too far if you don't want to. This was the first stop on our Italian road trip and didn't disappoint. We highly recommend it.

This guesthouse is super authentic, you are staying with the owners in their home. The elevated townhouse occupies the 3rd and 4th floors of a canal building so the views of Venice straight out the window from the breakfast table are incredible. The owners are very helpful and I enjoyed meeting the other two guests over breakfast each morning as you have breakfast on the same table all together. The quiet residential location is about 3 minutes walk from a shopping street and about 30 minutes walk from the train station or Piazzale Roma for the airport bus, so allow yourself time especially if you have heavy luggage. Another option is to take the vaporetto most of the way, and Sandra provides maps and directions for public transport options when you book. I have stayed in a number of guesthouses / pensiones in Venice over the years and this is the best one by far.

The Altana room at Sandra and Leos is a small piece of heaven suspended amid church bells with snow covered dolomites and the basilica of San Marco visible in the clear air. People keep asking why we go back so often. We say why not? When everything you need for an authentic stay in Venice is so helpfully to hand. Thank you Sandra and Leo for your unfailing care kindness and wonderful breakfasts with the best coffee in Veneto. We are glad to have shared a small part of your lives with so many of our family and friends who have all been delighted and are also determined to return. For us, B and B Sandra is Com' era dove era. .Arrivederci

We stayed in the attic room which had a roof top view of the canal & it was beautiful. Room was clean, spacious & bed was really comfy! Loved the breakfast - had cooked eggs every morning in whatever style you wanted. Host were really helpful & kind. However, do take note of the flight of stairs up to the B&B if you have big luggage. It was struggle for us to carry it up & down the stairs. But that’s a small matter considering all the other positive points.

Sandra and Leonardo were wonderful hosts, the breakfasts were delicious and the room was clean and comfortable. They are located in a nice, quiet area not far from Strada Nuova. I would definitely stay again if I ever return to Venice.
