Just steps from the waterbus 42,51,52 or the Alilaguna from the airport, this hotel is cozy and classy at the same time. In a great neighborhood location for getting around to various parts of Venice too! Service is super! Stay here.....Matteo will treat you right! -LD

Matteo the owner could not be more accomodating or helpful. He made our visit to Venice memorable with great recommendations of 'local' restaurants. The location was perfect for us: away from the crowds, on the water, and at the Fondamente Nuove Watertaxi stop (easy to/from airport). The rooms were wonderful. Recently renovated, beautiful bathrooms with marble and tile, beamed ceilings,... More

Matteo is one of several reasons this hotel is very nice - other reasons being, the price is reasonable, the location great, the other folks very personable /helpful, the breakfast quite adequate, the room quiet and clean. The hotel was very easy to find and only a short walk from the vaporetto stop, but take my advice - DONT OVERPACK.... More

We (2 couples) stayed 3 nights at the hotel. It occupies the ground and first floors of a recently refurbished mansion and was an excellent base: very comfortable, well-furnished and quiet rooms, and with good views over the lagoon from most rooms. It is just opposite the Fondamente Nove water taxi terminal which makes it an excellent base for getting... More

We stayed for 1 night at the Hotel Vecellio which is located right on the Fondamente Nove vaporetto stop in the lovely sunshine of late September. Location is just perfect if carrying lugguage as you step off the boat and literally into the doorway of the hotel which is fitted out in the most lovely Venetian traditional decor. Our room... Everything previous reviewers have said about this wonderful hotel is true. The rooms are beautifully decorated, the location - right by a boat stop - can't be beaten and Matteo is a little gem! Our room had a lovely view of the lagoon and it was great to look out of the window in the morning to watch all the... More

What an incredible find! This is the perfect little hotel. It seems much more than a 2-star. It is beautifully decorated in traditional Venitian style with Murano glass light fixtures, rich brocade drapery and bedspreads, immaculately clean marble floors, gorgeous water views. Amenities include phone, cable TV with CNN in English, hair dryer, efficient air conditioning, a shower with plenty... More

The hotel has an excellent location if you like a beautiful view over the lagoon, a perfect site for water transportation and a quiet area away from the hubbub of tourists. We walked 5 minutes from the airport to the Alilaguna water transportation (buy the ticket for 6 euros in the airport) and 30 minutes later you are at the... More

We spent 4 wonderful days in Matteo's great little hotel. Apart from the lovely decorated clean rooms and a very convenient location, it's the very personal touch with wich his owner leads his place, that makes it special. We definitely enjoyed our time there and we would recommended it without hesitation.

This hotel is great value for what you get.. our room was decently sized, very clean, with quality classically styled furnishings, cable TV (CNN in English), air conditioning that worked and a nice (if rather small) bathroom. Our shower was fully enclosed (I gather some may not be from earlier reviews) and worked well. Nothing dusty or musty about the... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighborhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
