We and our 12-year-old son stayed in a two-room suite on 16 and 17 July, and really, really loved this place. We had hoped for a scenic, well-located, relaxed, comfortable, air-conditioned place to stay after 8 nights on a Lake Garda campsite, and B&B San Firmino exceeded all those expectations. While, upon arrival, there was confusion about the room actually booked (what we were initially given did not match the description emailed from booking.com), this was very promptly and calmly resolved, and our stay was truly wonderful.

This is a superbly situated B&B, with great views over a large and relatively quiet (but still vibrant) square, canal (with an active gondola and taxi stop, which can be handy) and two bridges. It was like having a little slice of Venice at your windows and doorstep. We ate in the restaurant underneath and found the food good, and there's also a great daytime outdoor café outside the B&B with excellent (and cheap) coffees (and very...

I loved this B&B. There was so much history with its beamed ceilings and shuttered windows. We had a lovely view of the canal from our room. The venetian furnishing and decor were lovely. Breakfast was also very nice.

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
