You will end up walking all around Venice so location isn't important. It's close to Saint Marks Square which is good for about 5 minutes. Arrived at the hotel which is round the back end of a dodgy alley and was greeted by the rudest staff ever. They kept our passports over night meaning we had no ID and they...

Friendly and educated staff. The rooms are small but nicely set. If you're on the taller side then please watch your head when walking around stairs and corners. The breakfast served here is pretty decent. The location of the hotel is a plus with everything within walking distances so you don't have to spend $$$ on the gondola to go...

Staff just not interested in our wellbeing . Never once asked if we were ok or having a good stay. Breakfast basic but ok. Must add we were all bitten by mosquitos and possibly bed bugs quite badly. Rooms are not bad but cat walking about on landings could be source of fleas. We were a family group of 7...

I absolutely adored this hotel. From the moment we walked in the door, I was completely charmed by the old world feel of the place. the foyer, the check-in desk, the staircase up to the rooms, and especially our room itself, which was slightly sunken from the hallway and had this little staircase going down into it. The bed was...

We blindly booked this hotel through Hotwire, so we did not know what to expect. Needless to say, a dissapointment is an understatement, but that's besides the point. The room was terribly small, it had a strange odor and there was mold build up by the fan in the bathroom. As if that wasn't enough, when we woke up we...

The last stop on our Italy trip we stayed at Hotel Castello. Of the three properties we stayed this was the best. It included a Very comfortable room, bathroom with a beautiful tub and an awesome breakfast that was included. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The only negative is that there is no elevator.

This small hotel is very close to Piazza San Marco and not to difficult to get to with luggage (Usual problem in Venice)' Although the entrance is in one of those obscure narrow passages, we quite enjoyed staying there. The staff is very friendly. The breakfast was a typical European continental but good. The Dining hall is comfortable. The bathroom...

We visited this wonderful city and although we knew that we could expect a fairly small bedroom due to the nature of Venitian architecture and the age etc, we thought that's ok because at least we can sit on the roof terrace at night after a long day sightseeing. Yes there is a roof terrace but it is nothing like...

Our room was the size of my walk in closet. I know that hotel rooms in Europe can be small, but this one was ridiculous. The bed was pushed up right against the wall, otherwise you would not have been able to get in the door. I can handle old world ambience, but when they have a folded up piece of...

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
