This hotel is almost hidden in plain sight. It is within walking distance from st. Marks square. It is surrounded by restaurants and shops. Beds are comfortable and room size is decent. Breakfast is included. There is bar if you want a nightcap.

You will be greeted by courteous, caring and friendly staff. I cannot stress the importance of staying at a family run small hotel such as the Fontana. You will receive a warm welcome from the very personable and professional Stainer family members, who will go out of their way to ensure that your Venetian visit is both comfortable and rewarding.... This hotel is centrally located--so close to everything--only a few bridges from Saint Mark’s Plaza. The staff here Gabrielle, Diego, and Nona are wonderful--they recommended restaurants, attractions, and tips. They made phone calls to arrange tours, also. We took a bus from the airport to a vaparetto--everyone offered guidance the entire way. Once off the vaparetto, the hotel is only... More

This hotel had lots of character, we booked it for the great location which it delivered on. Rooms felt homely and the lounge downstairs was handy. Right next to St marks square so super easy to access all the hotspots, would recommend.

Firstly - I cannot fault the location of this hotel. It is close enough to St Marks but without all the crowds. It was a perfect spot for exploring Venice. Also - the staff were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the room we had was disappointing. There was very little space for our clothing - just a few hangers in the... More

Just stayed at the Fontana 2days ago. It's a great little hotel located very close to both the San Zaccaria vaporetto docks and St Mark's square making it ideal for people like us who travel on our own. The rooms are comfortable with a great bed. The bathroom has adequate fittings, nothing to complain about. The breakfast included is good... More

This small hotel (just 15 rooms) is close to San Zacharias's church. We were in room 7, a very generous size. The front desk clerks were hekpful and friendly, they have a free breakfast and a small bar where you can get a drink or coffee (made by those friendly front desk people). There is a small elevator to get... More

Stayed 5 nights total over 3 stops in Sept/Oct. Very friendly place, family-run and always accommodating. Great location 5 minutes from St Marks Square, 2 minutes from waterfront and San Zaccaria Vaporetto/Aliliguna water stops. Comfortable rooms, simple (typical) Italian breakfast set-up, and a lift (not too common in small places in Italy). Left a large suitcase for weeks with no... More

We chose this hotel based on Rick Steves' recommendation in his Italy 2016 book. The service was excellent all around...from the front desk to the cleaning staff to the breakfast service. Diego, one of the family, treated us like family and was even able to get us into a restaurant that he recommended in spite of it having no reservations... More

Reasonable standard bed and breakfast. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and were very friendly. We were not happy with our room and next day we were offered the choice of three upgraded rooms, you don't get that often. The location is ideal and there was a good selection for the continental buffet breakfast.

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
