Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

I stayed here 2 nights in August. The staff at the front desk are beyond rude! One of them threw stuff on the floor in anger when a guest asked him a question. Do not stay here! Bathroom was appalling! There are so many other places to stay.

The simplest of questions was too much for the attendant with the mustache on duty. We asked how to get a water taxi, and he told us to walk a mile to the water taxi stand to find out. He’s a discredit to Venice. Never stay at this hotel.

The Hotel Santa Marina is a charming, quaint hotel in Venice that was clean, comfortable, and located in an easy walking distance to St. Mark's Square. My husband and I were in Venice for two nights as part of a tour group. Our room was on the bottom floor which was a benefit if you like a cooler room. Some people stated that the upper floor rooms were hot. Our room actually was a bit chilly which was great since temperatures outside were in the upper 90s. Our room had a large bathroom with a giant tub/shower. Breakfast was good. There are two rooms that have food in it. One of these rooms is a covered room that is outside. Typical European breakfast foods were available that included salami, cheeses, and bologna. Many pastries were also available. There was a machine available to make waffles. Coffee comes from a machine that you select what kind of coffee you want. This line does get a little long. Each time you leave the hotel you are to give your key to the front desk. It is a key on a large key ring, not a swipe card. There is a small grocery store in less than a three minute walk which comes in handy for water, snacks, wine, etc. If you have difficulty going up and down narrow steps I would recommend asking for a room on the lower floor.

Where do I start? I will start with the pros because it’s a much shorter list. For the pros: ~ One and only one of the lady staff was pleasant and helpful. ~The view from the room was stunning although we got a double bed instead of the twin we requested. ~ The room was always made when we returned. ~ We only had a short stay and most of our days were spent exploring the city which was stunning!! The cons: ~ Most of the staff were rude and irritable at even the smallest inquisition. ~ The WIFI DOES NOT WORK only in one room and only one! which is at the bottom floor near the desk- I raised this to the staff multiple times and although they claimed they were working on it nothing was done about it. ~. The breakfast is not great - stick to the pancakes everything else no - No variety in food you’ll be eating the same things over and over. ~ The shower does not work just trickles. ~ The room was not well insulated. ~ The track from the boat to the hotel was a nightmare since the weather was hot and the streets are confusing. ~ There is TOO MUCH clutter everywhere it’s hard to move around it looks like a hoarders house!!!!!!!! I would not recommend this hotel! Venice is beautiful enjoy it from ANYWHERE else

After the horrendous trek from the train station in the rain, we finally got to the Santa Marina and were met with less than friendly staff on the front desk. The lift is so small that we can't get in with our luggage so it came up after us. The room was clean, and the bathroom looked like it had recently been updated which was the nicest thing about it. If the room wasn't so small it would have been a much nicer stay but we couldn't even get around our bed when our bags were on the floor. It was tiny. Breakfast was nothing exciting and very basic - but the staff at breakfast were lovely. We only had breakfast once and every other morning we went out and had breakfast at local cafe's which was a much better choice because there is plenty of good food around - just not at the Santa Marina. When we checked out, my husband had to bring our bags down to reception himself and then carried them on his own to the bus. Although we loved Venice, we would not stay at the Santa Marina if we returned. Not what we expected for the price we paid.
