San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

We stayed for the last five nights at the Gritti Palace in Venice. The room and hotel ooze of historical relevance. The Acqua di Parma products in the bathroom were particularly nice, although the room was small. The location is phenomenal and the free breakfast for Titanium (Marriott) members was a nice positive. (If you are not getting a free breakfast, the EUR 81/person price is insane for a basic breakfast, in spite of the great experience of sitting on the Grand Canal.) The only drawback was the concierge service. We asked about going to the factory outlets at Noventa Di Piave and the concierge basically said it was a bad idea. He was dead wrong! Instead, he encouraged us to take a “free” water taxi to Murano to learn about the glass making. The glass making part of the tour was interesting, but that lasted about 5 minutes. The next 60 minutes were the equivalent of a time share pitch where we were encouraged to look at the retail shop, but “not pressured” to buy anything. Given the prices that were quoted for Murano glass and the recommendations of the concierge, I would not be surprised if there is an economic arrangement in which sales at Murano benefit the concierge. In other words, even if I’m wrong, skip the free boat and book your own trip to Murano. That way, you can go to multiple galleries and choose whether you buy or not. Also, don’t miss the Noventa di Piave factory outlets. The prices on Italian designers are incredible. Oh yes, and the hotel is great. Just plan ahead on your own for local attractions and restaurants.

Stayed in this hotel during busy season in August 2019. From check-in to check-out the hotel exceeded my expectations. The decor is traditionally Venetian - cast those minimalist wishes aside for your stay - with amazing attention to detail in every room and area. Had an amazing lunch on the Gritti Terrace with beautiful views out to the Grand Canal. Finished off an amazing stay with a personal water taxi back to Marco Polo airport which took about 40 minutes. I'm still dreaming of my visit to this hotel!

We just returned home from our stay in Venice at the Gritti Palace and I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. The location on the grand canal and the exceptional staff and amenities are beyond great. The place is absolutely beautiful and spotless clean. The atmosphere and luxury here is palpable. The rich history that the hotel has is incredible as well. The view from the terrace restaurant is simply perfect for a truly Venetian experience as the gondolas and water taxis travel the grand canal. The breakfast buffet is simply beyond belief and the staff is friendly and attentive to your every need. There is simply no other property that can match the Gritti Palace in Venice.

Arrived by water taxi (60 euros) from the train station and was immediately met by the staff on the dock. We arrived around 10am and room was ready in about an hour. As a platinum we were upgraded to a side canal view and were able to hear and see all the action below. Also we chose the breakfast amenity and it was incredible. Might be one of the best views for breakfast in the world. All staff we encountered were friendly and informative. The room was on the smaller side but it was beautifully furnished and had a large bathroom. There was no place to really put our 2 suitcases. Not that we watched much TV, only about 4 channels in English. Location is perfect away from the crazy mob scene of St Marks but only a 10 minute walk to it. Very peaceful. Water taxi to the airport was 120 euros and took about 1/2 hour. This is a special place that make a vacation in Venice extraordinary.

We strayed at this hotel for four days. It is the most mesmerizing place in terms of luxury and romance I ever styed in. The location was superb, the service is to[ notch, the restaurant and terrace is breath taking. I recommend taking the water taxi and sit at the back of the boat for a better view of the island it fells as if you are going on a cruise. I also recommend to go on an adventure by getting lost between the city ally, eventually you will find your way and have the most of the city view doing so.
