I chose this hotel primarily because of its easy access to transportation to the airport since I had a very early flight out of Venice at my departure and because of its proximity to the hotel in which my friends were staying. While the room itself was small, it was quite nice and modern with a very comfortable bed, good linens, and all the necessary amenities. What I found disappointing was the general atmosphere and the front desk service throughout my stay. When I arrived mid-afternoon, the check-in was easy, but not particularly friendly. The hotel was very quiet with no one in the lobby or the patio area. As I checked in, I was not offered nor given any information about Venice nor even an inquiry made as to whether I needed any -- just a very business-like rather cold check-in. There was no literature or information in my room either. My reservation had been for a room with a "city/or garden view". Once in my room, I looked out my window, and found the view was the eye-level picture of the very crowded and noisy bridge that all travelers cross to get from the Venice train station to the Piazza Roma where all the buses congregate -- certainly not a city or garden view. I called the front desk to inquire about a room with the view I expected from the description of my reservation, and I was very curtly informed that this was the "city view" and that nothing else was available. This surprised me as the hotel appeared to be quite empty. In fact, over the 3 days I spent there, I never saw any other guests in the lobby, in the bar, or on the outdoor patio. I did see a few other guests in the dining room at breakfast, but it certainly was not a full hotel. There was a cab stand right outside the hotel with the posted amounts of the fixed rates to the airport - 40Euros. When I inquired at the front desk about getting a cab from this cab stand to the airport, I was told that sometimes cabs were there and sometimes not, with a possible wait of up to an hour. I was informed that if wanted to be sure to have transportation at 4am, the best thing was to have the hotel arrange for a car, and that the cost for the car would be 50 to 60 Euros. The next day when I asked again about a taxi or a car, the price for the car had gone up to 80 Euros, but again I was told this was the only way to be sure I had a way to get to the airport so early, and that there was a surcharge because it would be considered "nighttime". I was told that calling a cab myself to reserve it was not reliable. Based on this info, I committed to having the hotel arrange for the car, and assumed I would be able to use a credit card as I had been using for any other transportation in Europe, but I admit, I didn't ask. The driver was there at 4 am, took me promptly to the airport (quite an expensive 15 minute drive), but when I tried to pay with a credit card, he informed me only took cash, something on which I had not planned and did not have 80 Euros in cash at that point. He told me he would accompany me inside the airport to an ATM to get it. As I had no choice, I did so, but incurred almost $30 charges in bank fees from this airport ATM to get the cash. All in all, I felt very duped by this experience with the private car. I felt I was at the mercy of the info given to me by the front desk. I certainly should have been informed that the cost could only be paid by cash. There also was just no "life" at this hotel, unlike the hotel in which my friends stayed just across the gardens that separated us -- people in the bar, in the lobby -- just lively. I would not choose this hotel again.…
