Location for a short stay is superb but not if you are carrying heavy luggage. After arriving in Piazzale Roma, we had to drag/lift our suit cases over bridges to reach the hotel which was a pain. When leaving we hired a porter to take us across the canal. We had a room with a canal view on the first... More

The Carlton was a lovely boutique hotel right on the canal. They had lovely Venetian glass chandeliers. The breakfast could have been better.it was very centrally located which was nice for walking.there was a very nice inner courtyard where you could go and relax.

We found this hotel a great disappointment. It is absolutely NOT a 4 star hotel! No coffee facilities in room, no bathrobes/slippers, TV was a fuzzy boxy old fashioned and not the expected LCD, there were cracked tiles, chipped bath and really old carpet. Front desk staff were really up themselves and dismissive. Overall would never recommend this hotel!

The hotel is located in a very good location close to both the train and bus location. It's easy to land at Marco Polo Airport and take the bus shuttle and arrive to the hotel in 20 minutes. To go site seeing you can take the public boats which stop at different location across the islands from the main station.... More

Visited in June 2016 for a break with my daughter. The location is great, not perfect but great as it is on the main Grand Canal so has a picturesque setting and is a little bit outside of the main tourist area. The majority of attractions to see are about a 20-25 min walk away but the beauty of being... More

We spent two separate nights here. Both times our room was lovely. The location is great as it is opposite the railway station and the bus station (for the airport bus) is a short walk away. San Marco Square and Ponte Vecchio are within walking distance, takes between 30 - 40 minutes to get there and it is well sign... More

I'm not sure why the hotel is rated 4 out of 5 - we were given absolute corner rooms on the 1st floor and booked two rooms since we have two children- one of the rooms had a foul smell and a wet carpet - the front office receptionist said this is the room we paid for not understanding our... More

The location of the hotel is perfect. The rooms are clean and not small. The staff are friendly. The roof top of it is breathtaking at night with the charm of Venice.Well i just have one comment the breakfast buffet should be filled with more vegetables and less sweets.

Booked this hotel for a surprise Bday for my girlfriend. First point, the pictures on the web site does not do it justice, in reality the hotel is much more modern and nicer The staff are brilliant and catered to all our request. I asked for a surprise bday cake to be placed in the room and even though we... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighborhood identity.
