As per other reviews the building is a bit dated but that is what I expect when going to Venice/Italy, the rooms have everything you need. Nice Rooftop Bar with a lovely view of the grand canal. Opposite the train station so good for links to the airport. Our booking with through BA and was pleasantly surprised on the price.

The hotel has an excellent location in terms of reaching it from external transport, its literally across the Canale Grande from the train station with the ponte degli scalzi nearby. It‘s also only 5-7 minutes from Piazzale Roma by foot (our path took us across two of the steep bridges). There is also a dock right in front of the Hotel. In terms of reaching the main attractions, it took us approx. 30 mins walking time (much more in time elapsed because of all the photo stops!) to get to Piazza San Marco, and 2 mins to Rialto. So there is a trade off here but it worked for us. The Hotel building itself is a bit dated with e.g. worn carpet or old windows. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and gave good recommendations. They also allowed a late (noon) checkout and kept our luggage while we went to Murano. We had a reasonably priced 3-bed room for my wife and out 7 year old, the room was spacious and clean. There was no view but we didnt book a room with a view. There is a 4th floor roof terrace club which seems only open in summer. Breakfast was nothing special but also nothing to complain about. I would stay here again.

We booked a “patio garden double room” #508 to be exact. The garden area was pleasant and private however internet did not work at all in this area. This area appears to be an add on to the hotel. In addition, air conditioner did not work either. In late October, open windows would suffice if only there were screens on the windows to keep the bugs out. Unfortunately we were bit up quite fiercely during our 2 day stay. I recommend avoiding this room and this area (garden patio) if internet and comfort are a priority.

Most of the recent reviews we’ve read are accurate; the standard rooms are small and scruffy and desperately need an overhaul, the bathrooms however are acceptable. Location is very convenient, breakfast is good and the staff generally friendly and helpful. Beware cost of drinks on the roof terrace, the menu stated that a Gin was €13 but €7 was added for the tonic, €40 is a bit excessive for two G&Ts!

When I made this reservation I was told that the room had a view of the canal and a queen size bed. Neither of these promises were kept by the hotel. The hotel was obviously very nice at one time, but it is extremely outdated. The staff was condescending and provided very poor information. I would definitely not recommend staying here.

Amazing view of the Grand Canal, walk out the front door and you are on the waterfront. Great little restaurants close by. Right across the canal from the train station. A bit of a walk from St. Mark’s Square, but doable. Very friendly staff. Rooms are comfortable.

Average hotel…and unless you know ahead of time…room was small, interior and NO VIEW! This is not a 4 Star Hotel. Staff is pleasant and breakfast was good…easy to find across from train station. If all you want is a place to sleep this will do. This hotel does a lot of group tours so don’t expect the Hilton or Ritz.

We arrived at Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal for a two day stay. We were happy with its location. The hotel lobby was well kept as opposed to the rooms and hallways. Our room was located on the first floor, hallway was narrow, dark and in need of paint. Once inside, we noticed its Venetian decor but the modern comfort expected was missing. Bed covers were outdated and looked dirty and walls were also in need of paint. The bathroom was spacious and clean, but hair dryer too old for our modern times. Breakfast was a plus;however.

The photos online are misleading. Even though it is on the canal, very few of the rooms actually have a view, so I do not recommend booking if that is what you are looking for. Our room was tiny and had a horrible view, although the bathroom was nice. We also had aperitifs at the rooftop restaurant, and the music they were playing was filled with profanity and explicit lyrics. Breakfast was good, however. Overall, I would not stay there again.

This is the perfect hotel, fantastic location, lovely breakfast, comfortable beds and the front of house gentleman Nicola was so so lovely. He was so helpful and very friendly. He always made time to chat and made sure we was ok. We have booked a return visit October 26th for 3 nights.
