Wonderful helpful staff so on the ball. We called in the day before our actual booking to make sure there were no mix ups (travel agent wise) they were so friendly and explained that we could leave our bags early and then check in. They offered to make taxi bookings and advised on pick up times and locations. Our room... More

Fabulous location on the Grand Canal. The rooftop bar and restaurant was lovely but what made it really special was Filippo the Maitre De. He went out his way to make sure everything was perfect for us.

We were on our honeymoon and were travelling down to Venice by train from Lake Como. In terms of location, it was bang opp the Venezia Santa Lucia train station, so at first we were delighted, but ultimately realised we would have to cross a big water bridge with our heavy bags to get over to the other side. We... More

This is a very good hotel, and having stayed in a number of hotels in Venice, it has become our 1st choice. The reasons for this; 1) Location, close to Piazza Rome (one bridge without suitcase ramp to negotiate) 2) Roof terrace and bar to relax in the evening and watch the sunset and life below 3) Some rooms for... Stayed here recently for 4 nights and we were pretty impressed. The room was suitably decorated for the city. The staff were generally very friendly and attentive and the prices weren't too bad, although I don't think the 10-15% hike in prices for the rooftop were justified. The view wasn't that good. The 'restaurant' area for breakfast wasn't big enough... More

I have just stayed at this hotel for 7 days and it has been fantastic. the staff are friendly and very helpful. the hotel is everything you would expect from one at this price range and it is a 4 star. To many people expecting 5 star treatment at a fraction of the cost.... The real bonus is the roof... More

We stayed at Carlton on our last 3 days after touring Croatia. The rooms are small, beds tiny and hard and pillows very hard. Rooms are very clean. Staff was friendly. We had an inside room so disappointed that it wasn't facing canal. No view! Breakfast is included and pretty decent. We had dinner one night in the hotel with... More

We stayed here in a tour group. Rooms need to be updated. Beds were not too comfortable. View from the top of Hotel was wonderful. Walk to San Marcos is 40 mins and quite confusing. Breakfast was ok. Staff was attentive. No view from our room.Bathroom was very cramped.

Opposite the railway station, but across the canal, the Hotel Carlton is in the middle of colorful action but the rooms are quiet with the windows closed (and a/c on). Very convenient as a base for walking or vaporetto. The breakfast is also comprehensive and good.

We have been here for three days and am amazed and disgusted with some of the negative comments. We have sampled the breakfast and it is comparable with most four star hotels we have stayed in. My daughter said it had the most variety she has seen abroad. The roof terrace, bar and restaurant is a gem. Something most hotels... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighborhood identity.
