My wife and I are infatuated with Venice, and have stayed at the Principe five times. Miss Manners might call it a "vulgar hotel" but we love it - clean, right on the canal, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable rooms. For people like us, who keep kosher, its proximity to the Ghetto is an important reason for our returning there....

First let me say that we loved the location...5 minute walk from the train...no need for luggage porter. Check in was smooth but mechanical...no "Welcome to Venice" or conversation about local activities. We loved our Room 130 Canal View BUT... Room decor was the original (peeling) wallpaper from the 50's It was very weird that we had to call the...

I was very very disappointed with my room. I was on 5 th floor, the lift only went to 4. The room was approx 2 1/2 mtrs by 3 mtrs with a tiny single bed which being 5ft8" was very small although I must say comfortable. The room was overpoweringly hot and uncomfortable, I had to phone reception to get...

Very clean, firm beds, helpful staff, no in-room tea station let it down. The breakfast was good and on for long 0730-1030. Honestly in a great location, only 5 min away from the bus stop with stopping 100 times to take pictures, took 20 min to walk to San Marco.

As expected in Venice, the rooms are very small. Liked the ice machines. The shower however was impossible to use without flooding the bathroom as it was very small and only had a shower curtain. That meant, wet toilet, not enough towels to keep the floor dry. Unpleasant.

We only booked this hotel because its price and proximity to the Central Station... but the decore and style was a little too much for us... we felt at a exaggerated classical style hotel... a place where time stood still in the 40's... A place where my grandparents arrived on their fist trip to Venice... But other than that, the...

Stayed here on a 4 night trip with Riviera Travel (UK). Impressive reception area and really excellent breakfasts, however the first room we were allocated (244) whilst spacious and well equipped looked out on to a truly gruesome service area with a patch of sky above. After my wife complained, the 2nd and subsequent nights we were relocated to room...

Would highly recommend getting the coach from the airport if arriving after dark. Water taxis are expensive and you wouldn't see much at night. Definitely worth buying Vaporetto, the jump on jump off water buses. €40 for 4 days and even covers you to island hop. This is great value. We bought these at the airport. We arrived at the...

Even though this hotel was an older style it was a nice stay for 2 nights on our Trafalgar tour. We were able to get a water taxi back and delivered right outside our hotel. The staff were very attentive and helpful. The rooms are small but comfortable for a short stay. Our room overlooked a nice street with markets,...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighborhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
