Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

Stayed here for 2 nights in the middle of January. Lovely authentic hotel about 10 minutes walk from the train or bus station so no need to take the water bus! The hotel is clean, rooms were a good size with plenty of storage and breakfast was plentiful. It's around a 30 minute

This was a friendly and clean hotel, good price for bed and breakfast. Me and my son stayed for 3 nights. We didn't have an ensuite but did have our own bathroom in the corridor by our room. We had a nice river view. The continental breakfast was nice, our room wasn't massive

Fantastic little hotel - perfectly placed for exploring Venice - just a short walk from the bus station (if you can navigate). Upon arrival we were very early, and our room was not ready, but we were allowed to leave our bags and go off exploring - which was lovely. Our room was

We were originally booked into a different hotel, however due to the recent floods unfortunately we were moved to Hotel Hesperia. The change in hotel certainly did not disappoint! Quaint little boutique hotel in a perfect location. Just a short walk from the main bus and train

The water bus is definitely the cheapest option. We bought a return ticket at the airport, not sure what it cost as my partner bought it but it was not much. If you are staying at the Hesperia it is ideal as the bus stop is opposite the hotel on the other side of the canal, just one bridge to cross and a 5 minute walk. We had planned to buy a weekend pass for the water bus, but glad we didn't as everything is within walking distance and it is impossible to get lost in Venice despite all the wee streets. Have fun, we did !!

How far are you from the Piazale Roma?
The motel is just a few minutes walk from there! Probably about 10, depending on how quickly you walk.
