I’ll start with the positives, the hotel location is amazing. Couldn’t be better. The staff are fantastic, helpful & friendly. The recommendations received from concierge were fab and we enjoyed everywhere we were recommended. We had a number of issues at the hotel which we were extremely disappointed by especially for £800 a night room. Breakfast was pretty average, definitely not 5 star. Needs improvement, more options and replenished more often. The hotel needs maintenance which seems to be lacking or not doing the job properly.

We have been coming to the Luna for over 40 years – long before the Baglioni Group took it over – and we regard it with great affection. Sadly, on this occasion we received little affection in return. The welcome on arrival was pleasant enough and a complementary drink was offered while we waited for our room to be ready. As we were ‘regulars’ who were staying for a week, we got a fourth-floor room with a good canal view (though this was not an upgrade). However, the mark of a good hotel is how they respond in a crisis, and here the front-of-house team fell short. When the water heating system failed one morning it was soon repaired but then failed again (at least on our floor) on our return in late afternoon. A cold shower in November is the last thing you need after an exhausting walk around the city. Nor do you need the type of arrogant, unsmiling and unsympathetic response that Italy’s 5-star receptionists seem to specialise in. We were repeatedly told that the hot water would return soon. It didn’t. Our repeated requests to speak to the Duty Manager were refused – he was busy. Eventually, when he showed up, he was apologetic, concerned and informative. Next day, his boss met us at breakfast and could not have been more charming and sympathetic, and we were offered generous compensation. But the point is this. Some of the front-of-house staff here need to be taken to one side and given some serious customer service training (no names – the management surely knows who they are.) On our departure, one of them even refused to admit a mistake on our bill. She argued with me until it was clear I would not give in. Again, no apology, just a grudging concession that I was right. So our affection for the dear old Luna has taken a knock this time. It has also made us more critical of some other aspects which we have previously overlooked. A five-star hotel costing us over €5,000 for a week’s stay should surely offer fresh orange juice as standard at breakfast – not on request as an ‘extra’. Also why no coffee-maker in our room – not even a kettle? Would they seem to be out of place in these antique surroundings? They have no problem providing an expensive mini-bar. And why do they offer almost every TV channel in Europe except BBC World? I could go on. This hotel has a lot going for it – particularly its location – but competition in Venice at the top-end is becoming intense, and there’s no room for complacency.

We had a wonderful stay at this perfectly located, very friendly hotel. Every single staff member we met was friendly, hospitable and helpful. We had a comfortable room, with a very comfy bed. Breakfast was simply superb, I think the best scrambled egg I have had, but also a wonderful choice of meats and cakes and fruit and yoghurts and tons of other lovely things. The bar was welcoming and the cocktails excellent. On the first night we had a meal in the hotel and what an experience! We had 4 courses, but with all the 'amuse bouche' I think it totalled 10. The atmosphere in the restaurant was perfect and the service impeccable. A wonderful wine list too! Genuinely one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. I have no hesitation in recommending this most brilliant five star hotel. We will be back next time we return to our favourite city.

My husband and I stayed here our first night of our honeymoon. I contacted the concierge before arrival and he arranged for a private water taxi that took us directly to the dock at the front door of the hotel. (We arrived very late at night so I felt more comfortable arranging a taxi ahead of time but if during the day you could walk out of the airport and find one easily). The hotel is located just around the corner from St. Marks Square and within easy distance of every attraction. The staff is amazing and the hotel is gorgeous. We spent some time at the bar talking to the bartender both nights of our visit and they were lovely. We also ate at the restaurant in the hotel and had the tasting menu. So much food and it was all delicious. There is a gondolier that stays right outside the hotel most of the day so it was easy to take a ride. October weather was slightly chilly but really only needed a light jacket. There were unusual crowds for that time of year but not really bad. We loved our room. It was large and well appointed.

Steps from Piazza San Marco and with gondolas a metre from the front doors, this elegant, opulent classic luxury hotel is in a perfect location to enjoy the best of Venice. We quickly lost count of the Murano glass chandeliers and sconces (even in our room!). The breakfast room appears to also be a ballroom, judging by the frescoed ceiling and the beautifully painted walls. The buffet was exactly as we hoped, with local cheeses as well as bacon and sausages and eggs and fresh pastries. Excellent coffee, too. The lobby bar thankfully isn’t overrun with passing tourists, but seems to attract hotel guests. We are heading there shortly, and expect it will be at least as good as it looks. There is a spa here, but we’ve been too busy wandering the city enjoying the sights. However, we feel utterly pampered returning from our walks to such a beautiful hotel and a beautiful room with a balcony with a view of the grand canal.

3rd time in this wonderful hotel. Where do I start? The front of house staff are helpful, informative and friendly and go above and beyond to make your stay perfect. The breakfast room is amazing and so are the staff. Hotel is spotles. Right next to St Marks but in a very tranquil spot. We were upgraded upon arrival. Far exceeded our expectations- again. Would not stay anywhere else when in Venice

I'm sorry to say this hotel doesn't get a super rating from us. We were there over a weekend and it simply fell short of a five star experience. Here's why: - being pregnant, We'd asked in advance for a room that was easy to get to. So imagine our surprise when we got there to discover that we'd been allocated a room far down the corridor, with additional flights of stairs - up and down - to get to. The room itself was what my husband called a dungeon. The lights weren't working properly, and the window gave onto a brick wall. They'd kindly offered us a bottle of wine, but again being pregnant, what was I supposed to do with it. So clearly there was no attention to detail there, and we insisted on changing rooms. I'm so glad we did because that new room was actually pretty and bright, no absurd flights of stairs in our path. But the main point is this: there are rooms which are really not good (dungeon might be a harsh way to describe it, but when you're paying 500 euros/night for it, fair enough). - this is entirely the fault of one particular waitress, but breakfast was not good for us. There is a buffet, which is so average it might remind you of a BA lounge spread. But here's why the waitress ruined it for us: our first morning we asked if there was hot food we could order or a menu, since the buffet was so sad looking. She said no, but there was!!!! It was only after we left that a friend of mine raved about her omelette, and I was so confused by it because the waitress had specifically said no and only asked us if we wanted coffee or tea! So she either didn't hear or understand us, but either way if we hadn't caught covid after our stay I would have remembered to complain to the hotel to get our breakfasts reimbursed. - this is again the fault of some staff: we needed a water taxi to take us to a wedding venue. They told us it would take 45mins and cost 70 euros. It only took us 15mins, and we were charged 100 euros. The extra 30 euros was because when the taxi driver asked if we wanted to pay him direct or add it to our hotel bill, we said the latter - why not? Well it's because when we checked out the receptionist informed us that when we pay through the hotel, they charge a premium. A 30 euro premium!! This is something you tell people BEFORE they're going to pay, not after! We would have of course paid the taxi driver directly than waste 30 euros because of an 'admin' fee. I feel like considering these mishaps happened in less than 48 hours, its just not a level of service that's acceptable from a 5 star hotel. Yes the location is great if you want to be near St Marco Square, and the rooms are clean, but ultimately, sadly, this hotel really doesnt cut the mustard.
