The front desk staff was very welcoming upon our check-in. As we'd booked via Expedia, they brought us a champagne on the house. We both don't drink. They quickly offered to exchange the champagne for something non alcoholic or a dessert. Very accommodating! The staff in general was very friendly. The hotel is situated at the water front, close to the San Basilio water bus station. If you don't mind walking, it's well situated hotel. (e.g. Rialto and the basilica di San Marco are a 20 minute walk)

We spent 4 nights at Palazzo Veneziano for our anniversary and expected a lovely canal-view room after friends who stayed here in September recommended it. Our first room on the first floor (110) had a canal view -- but it was mostly of a building on the other side of the canal with graffiti and police tape. We were so disappointed and planned to change hotels the following day. The staff at the front desk was wonderful and arranged to change our room t IF they had one available. We were surprised the hotel was fully booked, despite the limitations on traveling during COVID. The following day they did have a better room and moved our bags to 4th floor. It was a great room (407) with a lovely view. My husband had clicked the "rose petals" option while booking, so we had a heart of petals on the bed and lots of petals strew in the shower area. THANK YOU to the staff for saving our anniversary get-away. Besides the wonderful staff at the desk, the bartender Andrea was wonderful, as were the staff at breakfast. The room report: Our upgrade was to a large with a daybed along the ample windows overlooking a garden and the canal. The entry with bathroom and closet was raised and there were steps down to the bedroom area. The bathroom was the same as our first room, small but a fine size, newly renovated, convincing faux marble and LED colored lights. It was a great room. But note that the products are unspectacular, the towels large but not soft, and the hair dryer is one of those wall numbers where you have to press the button constantly. Also, a weak point, the bed is not great, rather hard but this could be saved with the contemporary featherbed-type pads we're used to at many lesser, 3-star hotels. The sheets are not soft. These last bits were a disappointment since we expected better amenities from a 4-star hotel. But none of these would prevent us from coming back. I would bring my own hair dryer. Breakfast: there is no buffet during COVID and the staff serves you what you choose. It's a long (if booked) wait and the sitting room (indoors only) was packed and distancing was difficult on the weekend when they were fully booked. The staff, as I mentioned, is wonderful and the coffee was good. The selections, eggs, omelettes if you ask, fresh pastries and more, was very good. If you can, take a plan without breakfast and stroll and find a cafe. Lots of outdoor options for dining. Why 4 out of 5 stars? This is still a wonderful hotel in so many ways, with a top staff and great common spaces, too. The photos they post are accurate. Beware those "canal view" first-floor rooms, but if you get a good price, then you know what you are getting. With a few tweaks, Palazzo Veneziano would be perfect. We will return.

Room Tip: Book a canal-view room on a high floor for a better view (obviously) and also much quieter.

Palazzo Veneziano could have earned a five star review were it not for some minor complaints and the response to the Covid-19 situation. The good aspects are easily explained. The hotel, not long open, still has that “new-feel”. The room we had (102) was spacious enough and had all the amenities you should expect from a hotel of this quality. Above expectations, if you compare its prices with the more prestigious counterparts on the Grand Canal and basin waterfront. There’s plenty of space to sit and relax in the public rooms, (all very well appointed), and a very pleasant outdoor area. I think the hotel was wise not to burden itself with a restaurant. There are plenty of options to eat close by, from prestigious tasting-menu establishments, to reasonably priced pizza joints. It has a good bar, staffed by a friendly and extremely knowledgeable barman, who dispenses delicious cocktails. One of the hotel’s biggest plus-points is its location. Choose a hotel away from the waterfront at your peril. You may think that the reasonably priced establishment, in the heart of San Marco is a bargain - until you try to find it, (especially whilst dragging your luggage). The Palazzo Veneziano is very easy to find and close to a regular water-bus stop and only a slightly longer walk from the stop for the “Blue” Alilaguna, airport-service. There are plenty of places in front of the hotel where you can alight from a water taxi, which the hotel will book for you, should you so wish. So why not five stars? While the hotel staff were all commendably professional, they did not bring to the attention of guests, overnight changes to the regulations surrounding daytime face-coverings in public. A simple notice on the door, (or in reception), informing guests of this change would have been helpful. We got this important information from a coffee shop owner. Covid-19 measures made breakfast a less than enjoyable experience. The hotel we stayed in a few weeks ago, simply dropped breakfast and provided a refund. I would have preferred that option here. I know that Covid-19 has made life extremely difficult for the hospitality industry everywhere and Palazzo Veneziano has done all it can to provide a service. The system required you to ask a “socially-distanced” server to place your breakfast items on a plate for you. However, you couldn’t identify most of the pastries, (too far away), and if you asked, you risked the ire of people waiting in the line behind you, (it was occasionally a very long line). As for the room itself, all the rooms on the mezzanine above reception received noise from the reception area - occasionally intrusive. While the fixtures and fittings in the bathroom indicated that no expense had been spared, (lots of marble and chrome), entry/exit into the bath/shower will be difficult for older guests, (very high sides). Probably impossible for people who have had hip-replacement surgery. Also, the towel rack, (for the bath towels only), was high up on the wall, (away from the other towels). This must generate lots of “Could we have some bath towels” requests, as the super-efficient receptionist was quick to point out where they were. The bathroom also had some rather high-tech lights, that cycle different colours. I’d have preferred low-tech, low-level lighting, that could have been left on overnight, to aid late night trips to the bathroom. Finally, let me stress that these small niggles did not really detract from our enjoyment of the hotel. The cost per night was way below the price we paid to stay in a prestigious, waterfront hotel, overlooking the Bacino di San Marco. Palazzo Veneziano had almost all the amenities that establishment had - at a third of the price. However, would I choose this hotel again, over our smaller, long-time Tripadvisor favourite? Sorry but no.
