I sort of knew when I booked this hotel based on the comments that it was nothing special. And that turned out to be true. It was clean but very old and the bed was terrible, it was well used and I almost had to hold on to it in order not to tilt out. Anyway I did not expect... More

We wanted a place within walking distance of the train station and cruise terminal, and chose Hotel Marte. I was concerned about the requirement of climbing stairs to check in--on the third floor, and there is no elevator. A friendly receptionist awaited and it took no time to check in. We ended up being assigned to a room on the... More

This is a great little hotel. Yes lot of stairs to reception (leave your bag at bottom as your room is probably accessed via a separate door). If you are frail, Venice is not for you, as you are likely to cross at least 100 bridges in a day all with steps! The hotel stairs were no bother to me... More

I never provide hotel reviews but I do reder to them when booking a hotel and I think this one deserves a recent review. When I initially booked Hotel Marte I was skeptical because of the 1 star rating it received on the booking websites I checked. Hotels in Venice are not cheap and are limited during high season. This... More

We went here on out first night of coming to Venice. I've Honestly never eaten somewhere so horrid! The location is very very nice which is what attracted us however the food and service was just unacceptable! We had 2 main dishes and a few sides ... It was €88!!!! We were both absolutely gutted! Please please don't go here... More

Since the cost living in Venice is quite high, we just look for a budget one to stay. We came from London with big and many stuffs. Check-in counter is about third floor and no lift!!! Yes! Walk up with heavy things by yourself. Make sure you have Non-Verbal skill if you meet old lady when checking in as she... More

Seriously surprised when i walked into room 101 to find an updated bathroom, decent accommodations and a view to remember for the rest of my life. Hesitant to use based on reviews, but pleasantly surprised. I guess I can confirm that there are many stairs, but location, view and room was great. Bathroom much better than my home! I highly... This isn't a bad hotel. They could use a consultant to come in and change a few things. When we first got here we didn't have just the normal things in our room - like toilet paper. The room was very clean, and very basic. No real complaints to be made. Stairs, oh my goodness the stairs!! So stairs and... More

Called into this bar for drinks as we liked the location; completely overcharged - and elderly owner turned from our 'best friend' to nasty- not worth arguing but this experience showed disrespect to tourists supporting the city.

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighborhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
